Zware metalen en voedingsgewassen: impact van atmosferische depositie nabij spoorlijnen

Verhoogde metaalconcentraties in groenten gekweekt langsheen spoorwegen

Het is algemeen geweten dat groenten die geteeld worden langsheen een drukke weg of op een verontreinigde bodem vaak te veel zware metalen bevatten. Maar hoe zit het met groenten gekweekt langsheen spoorwegen? Hoewel luchtvervuiling voornamelijk gelinkt wordt met gemotoriseerd verkeer, blijkt uit recent onderzoek ook spoorverkeer bij te dragen tot luchtvervuiling door de emissie van metaalpartikels.

Luchtvervuiling door spoorverkeer?

Door de steeds grotere behoefte aan mobiliteit in de moderne samenleving, is het verkeer uitgegroeid tot één van de belangrijkste antropogene bronnen aan luchtvervuiling. Hierbij is het algemeen bekend dat de uitstoot van gemotoriseerd verkeer in belangrijke mate bijdraagt. Eén van de belangrijkste verkeersgerelateerde polluenten zijn fijn stof. Fijn stof is een verzamelnaam voor kleine deeltjes (vloeibaar – vast) van uiteenlopende grootte en samenstelling die zowel tijdens verbrandingsprocessen als door de slijtage van banden, remmen, wegen en dergelijke ontstaan. Tot op heden wordt spoorverkeer niet gelinkt met luchtvervuiling. In tegenstelling denkt men vaak dat het vervoer per spoor veel minder schadelijk is voor het milieu dan wegverkeer. Uit recente studies blijkt echter dat het spoorverkeer partikels genereert en vrijstelt in de atmosfeer. Deze partikels zijn vaak metaaldeeltjes die worden gegenereerd door wrijving en slijtage van wielen, remmen, sporen, pantograaf en bovenleiding. Ook de verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen door dieseltreinen dragen bij tot verhoogde metaalconcentraties in de lucht. Verschillende studies die het effect van de spoorwegen onderzochten vonden zo verhoogde metaalconcentraties in bodems langsheen spoorwegen en in planten van spoorbermen.

Worden er groenten langsheen spoorwegen gekweekt?

België heeft 3631 km spoorlijnen, 5832 km bovenleidingen en 4309 spoortoestellen. Dit maakt van het Belgische spoornet één van de dichtstbespoorde en drukst bereden netten in Europa. Als gevolg grenzen deze spoorlijnen in stedelijke gebieden aan vele tuinen, waaronder ook volkstuintjes, terwijl ze in landelijke gebieden akkers en grasland doorkruisen.

Het kweken van eigen groenten kent al enkele jaren een sterke comeback. Maar omwille van de beperkte ruimte en de hoge vraag zijn volkstuinen vaak gelegen op restgronden. Een inventarisatie in opdracht van de Vlaamse overheid gaf aan dat 17% van de Vlaamse volkstuinen in de onmiddellijke nabijheid ligt van spoorwegen. Vele van deze volkstuinen gelegen naast de spoorweg worden ook verhuurd door de NMBS-holding. Zij verhuurden in 2007 546 volkstuinen verspreid over Vlaanderen en het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest.

Proefopstelling

Aan de hand van twee proefopstellingen werd het effect van spoorverkeer op het kweken van groenten onderzocht. Enerzijds werd het afstandseffect bepaald door stalen te nemen in maïsvelden gelegen naast de spoorweg. Hierbij werd een gradiënt loodrecht op de spoorweg uitgezet, waarbij om de 2,4 m maïsbladeren werden geplukt. Bij deze opstelling was het ook mogelijk om het effect van de overheersende windrichting te bepalen. Anderzijds werd er in de volkstuin van zes vrijwilligers, gelegen langsheen de spoorweg, sla gekweekt en bodemstalen genomen. Deze sla werd op verschillende manieren gekweekt zodat het mogelijk was om het effect van een serre, het kweken in potgrond en het wassen van de sla te bepalen. Alle stalen werden geanalyseerd op metaalconcentraties.

Resultaten

De resultaten toonden aan dat spoorwegen bijdragen tot een significante verhoging van de metaalconcentraties van gewassen en bodem erlangs. Meer specifiek werden er verhoogde aluminium-, cadmium-, ijzer-, kobalt-, mangaan-, molybdeen- en zinkconcentraties gemeten in sla en maïs. Bij de bodemstalen werd een verhoging van de cadmium-, chroom-, ijzer- en zinkconcentraties vastgesteld. De aluminium-, ijzer-, molybdeen- en zinkconcentraties in de sla waren voornamelijk verhoogd door atmosferische depositie. De cadmiumwaarden in de sla werden verhoogd door opname uit de bodem. Ook voor aluminium, cadmium, ijzer, kobalt, koper en zink bleek de opname uit de bodem significant.

Van de bovengenoemde metalen is er enkel voor cadmium een maximum toelaatbare concentratie opgesteld. Een overschrijding van deze maximumwaarde vond plaats bij 5 van de 127 onderzochte stalen. Deze vijf stalen waren afkomstig uit twee van de vijf onderzochte locaties. Hoewel meer onderzoek nodig is, om de exacte bron van deze overschrijding te bepalen, geeft dit toch aan dat spoorverkeer een mogelijk gevaar vormt voor de gezondheid van consumenten.

De studie toonde aan dat de volgende factoren het effect van de spoorwegen op de metaalconcentraties in het gewas beïnvloeden:

  • Het gebruik van een serre kan de aluminium- en ijzerconcentraties verlagen.
  • Het kweken in een bak met potgrond kan de concentraties van aluminium, cadmium, ijzer, kobalt, koper en zink te verlagen.
  • Het wassen van de groenten draagt bij tot een verlaging van de aluminium-, kobalt-, lood- en ijzerconcentraties.
  • Het is belangrijk om voldoende afstand te houden tot de spoorweg en enkel te telen in een windopwaartse locatie ten opzichte van het spoor. De combinatie van deze twee maatregelen kan de concentraties van aluminium, cadmium, ijzer, kobalt, mangaan, molybdeen en zink verlagen.

Door het toepassen van één of meerdere van deze maatregelen zou het effect van de spoorwegen op de metaalconcentraties in gewassen kunnen worden gereduceerd. Deze maatregelen kunnen gebruikt worden voor het opstellen van best practice-aanbevelingen.
