De strijd tegen extreme droogtes in Noord-Ethiopië

Ethiopië ligt in de ‘hoorn van Afrika’ (figuur 1). Het is een land met vele extremen in klimaat en landvorm. In het meest noordelijke provincie Tigray werd er onderzoek uitgevoerd naar de productie van water dat over de grond stroomt tijdens een regenbui. Afhankelijk van het bodemtype (van zware klei tot zandleem) en het landgebruik (bv. landbouw of graasland) zal er een andere hoeveelheid regen in de bodem infiltreren. Hoe meer regen er infiltreert, hoe minder water er over de bodem zal stromen.

Per jaar zijn er twee regenseizoenen, een kleine van maart tot mei en een grote van juni tot september. De rest van het jaar is het droog. Soms zijn er zelfs onverwachte extreme droogtes. Om de lokale boeren toch nog te kunnen voorzien van water is het noodzakelijk om het water dat tijdens de regenseizoenen valt op te vangen zodat het beschikbaar is om te irrigeren wanneer er geen regen valt. Op deze manier kunnen er grote hongersnoden vermeden worden. Om dit doel te realiseren werden er reservoirs gebouwd die het afstromend water van een gebied kunnen opvangen voor later gebruik (figuur 2).

De grootte van elk reservoir is gebaseerd op een schatting van de hoeveelheid water dat erin zal vloeien vanuit een bepaald gebied, ook de afvoer genoemd. De aanwezige reservoirs zijn vaak leeg of slechts half vol. Dit wijst op een overschatting van de afvoer. Maar hoe komt dit?

Hier zijn verschillende verklaringen voor. Twee verklaringen die momenteel bestudeerd worden zijn 1) dat de parameters die gebruikt werden om de afvoer te schatten onnauwkeurig waren en 2) dat er andere factoren zijn die de afvoer beïnvloeden.

Het doel van mijn scriptie was om tot meer nauwkeuriger afvoerparameters te komen naargelang bodemtype, landgebruik en helling. Ook de oppervlakkige stenigheid, de vegetatiehoogte en de ruwheid van de bodem werden in rekening gebracht. Dit gebeurde door afvoermetingen uit te voeren tijdens regenbuien, op plotjes van 1 m² op 1 m² (figuur 3). Uit dit onderzoek kon er nagegaan worden wat een grotere impact had op afvoerproductie en waar er dus vereenvoudigingen konden gebeuren voor een eenvoudigere schatting.

Andere factoren die de afvoerschattingen beïnvloeden hebben te maken met de sterke degradatie van de bodem in deze regio. Bossen werden massaal gekapt om ruimte te maken voor landbouw, dit had vele implicaties. Om deze degradatie tegen te gaan werden er in grote mate bodemconserverings maatregelen genomen (figuren 4, 5). Deze maatregelen houden een groot deel van het afvoer op, waardoor het niet in de reservoir terecht komt.

Om de reservoir te vullen is een hoge afvoer gewenst, maar dit kan nefaste gevolgen hebben voor de gedegradeerde bodem in het afstroomgebied. Er zal dus een afweging moeten gemaakt worden van de voor- en nadelen. Het kwantificeren van beide effecten maakt het mogelijk om realistischer schattingen van het wateropvangpotentieel te maken. Dit draagt bij tot het verbeteren van de watervoorradenplanning om overmaatse reservoirs te voorkomen en de lokale bevolking te voorzien van water tijdens droge periodes.
