Iedereen wenst een duurzame omgang met onze planeet. De term ‘groen’ is zelfs zo populair dat het ondertussen de naam geworden is van een Vlaamse politieke partij. Een naam die aanslaat, want we willen allemaal dat onze kinderen en de daaropvolgende generaties de kans krijgen om een aangenaam leven te leiden in een gezonde, stabiele omgeving. Een belangrijke rol in dit verhaal is weggelegd voor de manier waarop we onze energie produceren.

De verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen ligt aan de basis van de hoge CO2-uitstoot en de hiermee gepaard gaande opwarming van onze Aarde. Wereldwijd is nog steeds meer dan 80% van onze energie afkomstig van deze goedkope smurie. Bovendien ziet het er niet naar uit dat hier verbetering zal in komen: schaliegas is de nieuwste hype op de energiemarkt en als binnenkort ook nog eens Undergroud Coal Gasification (UCG) toegelaten zal worden, dan kunnen we nog minstens duizend jaar verder met fosiele brandstoffen.  

Wat is het alternatief? Milieubewuster handelen wat inhoudt dat zal moeten gekozen worden voor kostelijkere manieren om onze energie te produceren. In deze masterthesis wordt allereerst uitgewijd over de verschillende technologieën die vandaag bestaan en wat verwacht wordt in de nabije toekomst: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), thorium reactors, nieuwe generaties zonnepanelen, zwevende windturbines, golf- en getijde-energie, zoutgradiëntenergie, smart grids, waterstofvoertuigen,... Zij zullen moeten helpen bij de overgang naar een groenere wereld.

Momenteel lijkt het haast onmogelijk om verder te leven zonder fossiele brandstoffen. De nucleaire sector lijdt aan grote imagoschade door onder andere de recente kernramp in Fukushima. Hernieuwbare energie zou op praktisch onuitvoerbaar grote schaal moeten toegepast worden om een degelijke bijdrage te kunnen leveren. Eén ding staat vast: er zullen opofferingen moeten gedaan worden en er zal innovatie nodig zijn. Onze mogelijkheden om energie te creëren zijn beperkt daar we gebonden zijn aan de wetten van de fysica. Het is in dit opzicht van het grootste belang dat we de weinige mogelijkheden dan ook grondig overwegen en uittesten. Een voorbeeld hiervan is kernfusie, de manier waarop sterren zoals onze zon hun energie maken.

Huidige kerncentrales splitsen zware atoomkernen (U-235) waarbij enorme hoeveelheden energie vrijkomen. Bij kernfusie gebeurt net het omgekeerde: hier tracht men lichte kernen samen te smelten. Kernrampen zijn hierbij uitgesloten aangezien fusiereactoren werken volgens een compleet verschillend mechanisme. De techniek met de meeste toekomstperspectieven maakt gebruik van wat men een tokamak noemt. Dit is een donutvormig toestel omringd door grote magneten. Theoretische berekeningen hebben immers aangetoond dat enorm hoge temperaturen nodig zijn om fusiereacties te kunnen laten doorgaan, in de orde van 100 miljoen °C. Omdat geen enkel materiaal bestand is tegen dergelijke temperaturen kan men bijvoorbeeld de fusiebrandstof omvormen tot een plasma van geladen deeltjes en  opsluiten in magnetische velden.

In België staat tegenwoordig geen tokamak meer. Voor mijn masterthesis ben ik afgereisd naar het Institute of Plasma Physics in Praag onder het mom van een Erasmus uitwisselingsproject en heb ik daar mijn onderzoek verricht op de tokamak COMPASS. Mijn thesis heeft een zeer uitgebreide inleiding van een zestigtal paginas waarin het kernfusieonderzoek in het algemeen wordt uitgelegd alsook de tokamak COMPASS met al zijn infrastructuur. Dit is geschreven in begrijpbare taal voor iemand die geen wetenschapsknobbel is. Een aanrader dus voor wie geïnteresseerd is in het energiegebeuren en meer in het bijzonder in kernfusie. De rest van mijn thesis bevat analystisch resultaten.

Het kernfusieonderzoek is vandaag gericht op ITER. Dit is een enorm geavanceerde tokamak die momenteel gebouwd wordt in Cadarache, een dorpje in Zuid-Frankrijk. Het is een miljarden-project waar het merendeel van de industrielanden aan meewerkt. ITER zou "de weg" moeten zijn naar een nieuwe bron van energie. De constructiedeadline is voorzien in 2020 en de eerste succesvolle experimenten worden verwacht in 2027. ITER zou het eerste fusietoestel moeten zijn dat meer energie creëert dan nodig is om het te laten draaien. Men is momenteel ook al bezig met het ontwerp van een demonstratie- kernfusiecentrale die gebouwd zal worden in 2040 als ITER slaagt. De eerste commerciële kernfusiecentrales worden verwacht in 2050-2060.   

Het geloof in kernfusie is wankel. Vijftig jaar geleden beweerde men hetzelfde als nu, namelijk dat commerciële kernfusiecentrales er binnen vijftig jaar zullen zijn. Zoals de uitspraak van S. Balibar laat uitschijnen is het een bijzonder complexe opgave om de juiste omstandigheden te creëren waaronder fusiereacties kunnen doorgaan. Eens helemaal op punt zou kernfusie echter heel wat voordelen hebben. De feitelijke brandstof bestaat uit deuterium en lithium, twee stoffen die kunnen geëxtraheerd worden uit oceaanwater. De voorraad fusiebrandstof is dus onuitputbaar in menselijke tijdschaal en is bovendien mooi geografisch verdeeld - er is geen aanleiding tot "olieoorlogen". Kernfusie produceert geen CO2 of andere schadelijke gassen. Radioactief afval is onvermijdbaar, maar het is van totaal andere aard dan bij splijtingsreacties. Het is voornamelijk afkomstig van de materialen waaruit de reactor zelf is opgebouwd, en niet van wat erin zit. Een goede materiaalkeuze zorgt ervoor dat de radiotoxiciteit na ongeveer 50-100 jaar lager is dan die van steenkoolas. Verder zou een kernfusiecentrale meteen enorm hoge baseloadvermogens kunnen genereren van de orde gigawatt, iets wat bijvoorbeeld onmogelijk is met hernieuwbare energie.  

Kernfusie biedt dus heel wat voordelen, maar deze vergen een hoge prijs... geduld. In een tijd waarin nú moet gehandeld worden om de prangende klimaatsverandering tegen te gaan, wordt kernfusie daarom wel eens opzijgeschoven. Wie tegenwoordig op Groen! stemt, stemt tegen kernfusie. Denk in het vervolg dus twee keer na als je "groen" wil stemmen.
