Impedantie van de grond bij monopiles voor offshore windturbines

Goedkopere offshore windenergie door verbeterde funderingsmodellen

Om de kost van offshore windenergie te reduceren, lopen binnen de EU verschillende onderzoeksprojecten.  De grootste onzekerheid bij het ontwerp van de structuren ligt nog steeds in het funderingsontwerp. De ontwikkeling van een vernieuwde ontwerprichtlijn voor de funderingen van offshore windturbines kan de totale projectkost van offshore windparken significant terugdringen. De verbeterde richtlijn zal een belangrijke bijdrage leveren om de kost met 35-40% terug te dringen tegen 2020.

Door de ambitieuze doelstellingen van de Europese Unie om de ecologische voetafdruk van de mens op de aarde te verminderen, kent de offshore windindustrie de laatste jaren een sterke groei. Tegen 2020 zou de offshore windenergie ongeveer 7% van het bruto Belgische elektriciteitsverbruik leveren. Hiervoor zijn in België verschillende concessies toegewezen op de grens met de Nederlandse territoriale wateren.

Voor deze windturbines op zee bestaan verschillende ondersteunende structuurtypes. De keuze van het meest efficiënte structuurtype wordt voornamelijk bepaald door de locale topologie.  Tot op een waterdiepte van ±30 meter is de monopile meestal de meest economische keuze. Dit is een holle stalen buis die in de zeebodem gedreven wordt. Hierboven komt vervolgens een transitiestuk waarop uiteindelijk de toren, gondel en rotor geïnstalleerd kunnen worden.

De fabricage- en installatiekost van een monopile fundering bedraagt ruwweg 25% van de totale projectkost. Elke vermindering in lengte, diameter of wanddikte van de monopile heeft daarom een significante impact op de projectkost van een offshore windpark. Het ontwerp van deze funderingspalen gebeurt tegenwoordig nog steeds met ontwerpcodes die hun oorsprong hebben in de olie- en gasindustrie. De dimensies van monopiles verschillen echter sterk van die voor structuren in de olie- en gasindustrie. Hierdoor zijn er vele bemerkingen bij de huidige ontwerpcode en worden monopiles momenteel niet optimaal ontworpen.

Metingen op deze constructies hebben aangetoond dat de resonantiefrequenties hoger liggen dan in het oorspronkelijk ontwerp. Dit wijst op een onderschatting van de funderingsstijfheid met de huidige ontwerpcodes. Daarom zou een kortere paallengte volstaan om te voldoen aan ontwerpcriteria zoals de minimale vereiste resonantiefrequentie.

Een ander belangrijk aspect is de demping op de structuur. Demping op de structuur zorgt ervoor dat er minder resonantie is, wat een positief effect heeft op de vermoeiing van het staal. Demping ontstaat wanneer energie van de structuur gedissipeerd wordt aan de lucht, het water of de ondergrond. Vooral op dit laatste aspect bestaat er veel onzekerheid, waardoor er ontworpen wordt met een conservatieve waarde voor de demping.

Om met deze aspecten rekening te houden, loopt er momenteel een grootschalig onderzoeksproject dat geleid wordt door het Deense DONG Energy. Het academisch consortium, onder leiding van University of Oxford samen met Imperial College London en University College Dublin, werkt met DONG en haar partners om een verbeterde richtlijn op te stellen.

“Wij verwachten aanzienlijke besparingen door onder andere de dimensies van monopiles te reduceren en door nieuwe installatiemethodes. Daarom zijn wij van mening dat dit onderzoek een belangrijke bijdrage kan leveren ten opzichte van onze inspanningen om de kost van offshore windenergie met 35-40% terug te dringen tegen 2020,” vertelt Bent Christensen, Senior Vice President bij DONG Energy Wind Power.

Inspanningen als deze maken van offshore windenergie  een concurrentieel alternatief ten opzichte van andere energiebronnen. Dit stimuleert de overschakeling naar een duurzame energiebevoorrading.
