Organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells: Material stability and potential environmental burden of a new rising star in photovoltaics

Perovskiet zonnecellen: Toekomst in hernieuwbare energie?

Debatten rond het thema energie krijgen steeds meer aandacht in de hedendaagse maatschappij als gevolg van de alarmerende uitputting van conventionele en niet-hernieuwbare energiebronnen zoals steenkool, aardolie en aardgas. Gekoppeld aan de parallelle aantasting van het milieu bij het ontginnen van deze energiebronnen wordt de ontwikkeling van onuitputtelijke, groene en toch nog economisch gunstige energietechnologieën alsmaar relevanter. In dat opzicht is er in de laatste decennia bijzonder veel geïnvesteerd in de oppuntstelling van zonne-energie. De totale ingestraalde energie op het aardoppervlak afkomstig van zonlicht is namelijk enkele duizenden malen groter dan de hoeveelheid die we verbruiken. Vanuit een puur technisch perspectief zou de huidige beschikbare technologie zelfs al in staat zijn om de hele wereld van energie te voorzien. Tot op heden zijn vooral silicium zonnepanelen in trek. Ze zijn alomtegenwoordig geworden op de daken van vele nieuwe maar ook oudere gebouwen. Dit is mede te danken aan technologische verbeteringen die ervoor gezorgd hebben dat de kostprijs van silicium-gebaseerde zonnepanelen gevoelig is gedaald, tot op het niveau dat er geen overheidssteun meer nodig is om de investering van een fotovoltaïsche installatie op relatief korte termijn terug te winnen. Doch, het productieproces van silicium "wafers" (de kleinere cellen waaruit een groot paneel is opgebouwd) is complex, en bijgevolg is er een inherente onderlimiet verbonden aan hun kostprijs. Alternatieve, low-cost technologieën zoals organische zonnecellen en Grätzelcellen zijn al sinds begin jaren 1990 in ontwikkeling maar hebben tot dusver vooral in termen van efficiëntie nog niet de vereiste maturiteit bereikt. Enkele jaren geleden kwam het tot een keerpunt: de ongezien snelle ontwikkeling van organisch‑anorganische perovskieten plaatst een nieuwe veelbelovende speler in het fotovoltaïsche veld, die tevens uitgeroepen is door het prestigieuze tijdschrift ‘Science’ tot een van de belangrijkste wetenschappelijke doorbraken van 2013.

Lood-bevattend en instabielPerovskiet is een verzamelnaam voor de kristalstructuur (d.w.z. periodiek gerangschikte elementen) ABX3, waarbij A en B kationen zijn en X het anion. De kristalstructuur is in de 19de eeuw ontdekt in de natuur in de vorm van het mineraal calciumtitanaat, maar er is een overvloed aan combinaties van elementen die zich in de perovskietstructuur kunnen schikken. Uiteraard worden de eigenschappen ervan sterk bepaald door hun chemische samenstelling. Hoewel het specifieke perovskiet dat nu populair is in fotovoltaïsche toepassingen (A‑B‑X3=methylammonium‑lood‑trijodide) voor de eerste keer gesynthetiseerd werd in 1978 door Dieter Weber, was het eigenlijke potentieel ervan nog niet ontdekt en duurde het tot 2009 vooraleer er vanuit de onderzoeksgroep van Prof. Tsutomu Miyasaka een publicatie verscheen over het materiaal in een aangepaste Grätzelcel. Daarna duurde het nog drie jaar vooraleer de echte rage in gang werd gezet middels de introductie van een vernieuwde cel-architectuur. Deels kapitaliserend op 20 jaar onderzoek naar organische zonnecellen en Grätzelcellen, haalde deze configuratie in amper 3 jaar tijd op laboschaal record efficiënties van ~20%, bijna vergelijkbaar met silicium (25%). Ondanks deze baanbrekende ontwikkelingen staat het begrip omtrent fundamentele fysische en chemische eigenschappen nog in de kinderschoenen. Ook dreigt het perovskietkristal te degraderen onder invloed van stressfactoren zoals vocht en warmte, waardoor loodcomponenten kunnen vrijkomen. Zowel op labo-niveau als voor potentieel grootschalig gebruik leidt dit tot grote bezorgdheid. Wereldwijde onderzoeksinspanningen richten zich dan ook op het gebruik van alternatieve metalen in de kristalstructuur om het beloftevolle perovskiet te kunnen commercialiseren. Tin, ook een groep IV metaal, wordt als de beste kandidaat gesuggereerd. De atoomradius en elektronconfiguratie zouden de gunstige eigenschappen in termen van lichtabsorptie en ladingstransport kunnen faciliteren in het resulterende perovskietkristal, net zoals voor lood. Helaas is tin ook een zwaar metaal dat gekend is voor zijn nadelige toxische effecten, waardoor het gebruik ervan als ecologisch alternatief in twijfel kan getrokken worden.

Impact op milieuOm de impact van het zware metaal in de perovskietstructuur te onderzoeken werd de studie opgesplitst in twee complementaire aspecten. Allereerst gaat de focus naar het bestuderen van de exacte degradatieproducten. Hiervoor werden perovskietfilms blootgesteld aan een verhoogde temperatuur van 85°C als stressfactor. De gedetecteerde metaalhoudende afbraakproducten, voornamelijk loodjodide en tinjodide, werden vervolgens gebruikt om de impact van zowel tin als lood-gebaseerde perovskieten op het milieu in kaart te brengen. Hiervoor werd er gebruik gemaakt van het modelorganisme zebravissen Danio rerio. Deze gewervelde modelorganismen zijn uiterst efficiënt door hun snelle voortplanting en ontwikkeling, en ze vertonen 85% gelijkenis in genen met hogere organismen zoals de mens. Door gebruik van een protocol voorgeschreven door de intergouvernementele organisatie voor economische samenwerking en ontwikkeling (OESO) biedt dit modelorganisme een snelle route tot systematische vergelijking van beide perovskietfamilies. Er werd voor elk van beiden een reeks concentraties getest om het toxicologisch profiel in beeld te brengen. Opvallend hieraan was dat de vissen een grotere last ondervinden bij een blootstelling aan tin dan aan lood. Bij het vergelijken van fysieke abnormaliteiten gedurende de ontwikkeling bleek echter dat onderliggende reacties, die niet noodzakelijk gekoppeld zijn aan de blootstelling aan het zware metaal, ook een rol spelen. We toonden aan dat de spontane oxidatie van tin-gebaseerde materialen resulteert in een verzuring van het testmedium, hetgeen bijna exclusief verantwoordelijk was voor de hoge letaliteit. Hetzelfde mechanisme treedt in mindere mate op bij blootstelling aan loodhoudende afbraakproducten, maar in dit geval is het karakter van de toxiciteit duidelijk duaal: Het metaal wordt voor een kleine fractie geneutraliseerd waardoor naast een mindere mate aan verzuring ook de werkelijke blootstelling aan het metaal een toxisch effect in de hand werkt.In conclusie, deze resultaten nuanceren het verhoopte milieuvriendelijke karakter van tin versus lood in perovskieten, zoals vaak in de literatuur gesuggereerd. De studie onthult een route van intoxicatie (in de vorm van verzuring) die voorheen onopgemerkt is gebleven, en in geval van tin een grotere impact blijkt te hebben dan blootstelling aan het zware metaal zelf. Teneinde de perovskiettechnologie op grote schaal te kunnen toepassen is het dus raadzaam het enthousiasme voor tin als ecologisch alternatief voor lood met enige terughoudendheid te benaderen en verder onderzoek en ontwikkeling ook op andere metalen te richten.
