pH Hysteresis and electrolysis for zero-chemical input control of fermentation processes

Een nieuwe chemie – van maïs naar waardevolle grondstoffen

Bio-ethanol zorgt voor veevoeder

Biobrandstoffen zijn steeds meer in opmars, onder meer door de opgelegde normen omtrent hernieuwbare brandstoffen vanuit de EU. Enkele voorbeelden hiervan zijn biodiesel en bio-ethanol. Deze laatste kan geproduceerd worden uit een wijd gamma aan grondstoffen. In deze grondstoffen moeten koolhydraten aanwezig zijn om bio-ethanol te kunnen produceren. Net daardoor is maïs een veelgebruikt startproduct in het productieproces van bio-ethanol. In dit proces wordt de maïs voorbehandeld om suikers vrij te stellen uit de maïskorrels. Deze suikers worden vervolgens door gist omgezet tot alcohol, zoals dit ook gebeurt bij het maken van bier. Het eindproduct van dit gistproces – dat ook bier genoemd wordt – wordt vervolgens gedestilleerd om de alcohol in zuivere toestand te verkrijgen. Deze alcohol kan dan gebruikt worden als biobrandstof of als grondstof voor de chemische industrie. De restfractie na distillatie – de onderstroom – is echter ook waardevol. Tegenwoordig wordt deze fractie meestal gebruikt om, na centrifugatie en drogen, veevoeder te produceren. Zo is in de VS de economische rendabiliteit van een bio-ethanolproces afhankelijk van de verkoop van dit veevoeder. De veesector in de VS maakt gretig gebruik van dit relatief goedkope veevoer dat door zijn hogere gehalte aan eiwitten een reëel substituut is voor zowel maïs- als sojavoer.

Geurige zuren

De onderstroom kan echter ook gebruikt worden voor de productie van grondstoffen voor de chemische industrie. Na centrifugatie van de onderstroom wordt een vloeibare en een vaste fractie bekomen, resp. ‘thin stillage’ en ‘wet cake’. Deze thin stillage bevat nog heel wat suikers, glycerol en melkzuur; producten die relatief eenvoudig omgezet kunnen worden naar vluchtige vetzuren. Deze vetzuren zijn algemeen bekend in het dagelijks leven. Zo is azijn een waterige oplossing van azijnzuur, een van de meest eenvoudige vluchtige vetzuren met twee koolstofatomen. Als er drie koolstofatomen aanwezig zijn, is er sprake van propionzuur, een product dat mee de typische smaak van Zwitserse kaas bepaalt. Boterzuur, dat de geur van ranzige boter veroorzaakt, heeft vier koolstofatomen. Tenslotte is er de typische geur van geiten, die wordt veroorzaakt door capronzuur, een vetzuur met zes koolstofatomen. Deze vluchtige vetzuren staan natuurlijk niet enkel bekend om hun geurigheid; in de industriële chemie kunnen ze ook gebruikt worden als grondstof voor de productie van brandstoffen, parfums en solventen. Hierbij zijn vluchtige vetzuren met meer koolstofatomen interessanter door hun hogere marktwaarde.

De productie van vluchtige vetzuren uit thin stillage is eenvoudig omdat de bacteriën die vluchtige vetzuren produceren er al in aanwezig zijn. Dit is het gevolg van de eerdere biologische omzetting van suikers naar ethanol. Hoewel dit vooral door gisten gedaan wordt, is het in de praktijk zeer moeilijk om een pure gistcultuur te behouden. Ook bacteriën kunnen goed gedijen in de omstandigheden die gecreëerd worden tijdens de ethanolfermentatie. De destillatiestap is echter een groot obstakel. Enkel een specifiek type bacteriën, de “sporevormers”, kunnen deze stap overleven. Dit zijn bacteriën die in staat zijn in een toestand over te gaan waar ze beschermd zijn tegen hoge temperaturen, droogte, etc. Wanneer ze daarna terug in een geschikte omgeving gebracht worden, kunnen deze sporen ontkiemen waarna de bacteriën opnieuw normaal kunnen groeien. Vele soorten binnen deze groep sporevormers zijn uitermate geschikt om vluchtige vetzuren te produceren. Dit zorgt ervoor dat de thin stillage, waar veel sporevormers in aanwezig zijn, enkel op de geschikte temperatuur (vb. 34°C) moet gebracht worden om de gewenste reacties te laten doorgaan.

De voordelen van scheiden

Zo eenvoudig als de productie van vluchtige vetzuren uit thin stillage mag zijn, zo moeilijk is het om deze vluchtige vetzuren af te scheiden en te zuiveren. De biologische reacties zijn, door het gebruik van de aanwezige bacteriën, niet specifiek gericht op één eindproduct. Alle vetzuren die hierboven genoemd werden, worden geproduceerd. Een ander probleem is de onbruikbaarheid van de vetzuren zolang ze in de thin stillage aanwezig zijn. Om de vetzuren bruikbaar te maken, is een scheidingsstap nodig die ze uit de thin stillage kan halen. Klassieke chemische technieken kunnen hiervoor toegepast worden, maar deze vereisen vaak solventen. Omwille van economische en ecologische redenen zijn die echter te vermijden.

Daarom werd experimenteel getest of het gebruik van membranen in combinatie met een elektrische stroom de mogelijkheid biedt om de vetzuren uit de thin stillage in een propere waterige oplossing te recupereren. Een neveneffect van deze techniek is de elektrolyse van het water aanwezig in de thin stillage. Dit zorgt ervoor dat in de thin stillage hydroxide-ionen en waterstofgas geproduceerd worden. De eerste zorgen ervoor dat de thin stillage niet verzuurt door de productie van de vluchtige vetzuren terwijl de tweede een invloed heeft op de geproduceerde vetzuren. Door de elektrische productie van waterstofgas in de thin stillage worden vetzuren bekomen met meer koolstofatomen. Het gebruik van deze scheidingstechniek – membraanelektrolyse genoemd – heeft dus een drievoudig voordeel: de geproduceerde vetzuren worden gerecupereerd, de zuurtegraad van de vloeistof kan gecontroleerd worden zonder gebruik van chemicaliën en de geproduceerde vetzuren zijn economisch waardevoller.

En dan?

Er is echter nog veel werk aan de winkel. De vetzuren moeten nog van elkaar gescheiden worden – hiervoor zijn ook technieken in ontwikkeling – , de productie- en scheidingsstap moeten geoptimaliseerd worden, andere grondstoffen kunnen ook getest worden op hun potentieel voor vetzuurproductie, enz. Toch hebben de ontwikkelde technieken potentieel. Als de verschillende stappen van het proces op industriële schaal geoptimaliseerd worden, zou het in principe mogelijk zijn om dit procédé in te voegen voor de thin stillage gedroogd wordt. Wat overblijft na vetzuurproductie kan nog steeds gedroogd worden tot veevoeder. Deze aanpassing van het proces zorgt er dus niet enkel voor dat er een nieuwe, duurzame bron van chemische grondstoffen ontstaat, maar creëert ook een extra bron van inkomsten voor bio-ethanolinstallaties.
