Tomorrow Never Knows: Technostalgie en Retro Branding in Hedendaagse Muziekproducties

Deze thesis bestudeert de fenomenen van technostalgie en retromarketing en -branding in de hedendaagse totstandkoming van populaire muziek. Dit verlangen naar gedateerde audiotechnologieën wordt vooreerst gekaderd binnen een algemenere retrospectie, die door auteurs als Svetlana Boym en Simon Reynolds wordt erkend als een historisch maar ook eigentijds fenomeen met particuliere karaktereigenschappen. In haar peiling naar de drijfveren achter anachronistische consumptie stelt deze meesterproef die nostalgische verklaring echter in vraag. Esthetische intenties, voorkeuren voor bepaalde werkprocedés en sonische preferenties van muzikant en producer worden daarbij opgeworpen ter verrijking van het technostalgie-begrip.

De onvermijdelijke introductie van harmonische en dynamische vervormingen blijkt analoge technologieën en componenten, zoals elektronenbuis, transistor, transformator en magneetband, te onderscheiden van digitale opnamen, die zich kenmerken door een grotere technologische neutraliteit. Technologische veranderingen zijn niet alleen hoorbaar maar ook voelbaar in de hervormde opnamepraktijk, die de meerwaarde van heel wat ondersteunend studiopersoneel doet betwijfelen en een meer geïndividualiseerde praxis mogelijk maakt. De impact van technologie op studiocultuur vertaalt zich dan in de verschuiving van een noodzakelijk collectivisme naar een door de homestudio gedomineerd individualisme, waarbinnen de functies van artiest en producer tot één gecombineerde functie zijn geïmplodeerd.

Deze meesterproef merkt op dat het fenomeen van technostalgie zich niet beperkt tot de hernieuwde interesse in vintage apparatuur en instrumentatie. Zo laten heel wat historische merken zich in met de fabricage van reissues, al dan niet met behulp van verouderde assemblagemethoden. Ook boutique merken vallen vaak (maar zeker niet altijd) terug op een zeker cultureel verleden, waarmee ze een aura van authenticiteit naar zich toe trekken. Hun combinatie van kwaliteit en originaliteit, samen met zeldzaamheid en dus een hogere prijs, draagt dan enkel bij aan een exclusieve charisma. De eertijdse geluiden worden tenslotte ook digitaal gesimuleerd, hetzij binnen de native software van het DAW, hetzij als mobiele applicaties en plug-ins door derden. De digitale simulaties gedragen zich dan als skeuomorfen, de uiterlijke vorm aannemend van technologieën die ze niet meer zijn.

Hoopvol voor een verheldering van de maatschappelijke mechanismen die leiden tot technostalgie, richt deze thesis zich tot de postmoderne theorie. Deze reikt de individuele, eclectische zoektocht naar authenticiteit aan ter verklaring van anachronistische consumptie, wat alvast accordeert met de opgemerkte technologische hybridisatie van de studio. Toch biedt het postmodernisme weinig opheldering over de technische en sociale aspecten die de keuze voor technologie dirigeren. De thesis beargumenteert daarentegen dat technostalgie zich op een eeuwenoud snijpunt bevindt van het geloof in technologisch determinisme (al dan niet in zijn meest extreme vorm van techno-utopisme) en de sociale constructie van technologie. Het fenomeen is daarmee het gevolg van de actieve - en voor een stuk ook postmoderne - zoektocht naar een specifiek geluid, gevoel, proces en cultuur, een zoektocht die zich bovendien steeds voltrekt binnen een geldende technologische omkadering, die de opnamepraktijk op haar eigen specifieke wijze determineert.
