De roman als geschiedenis: een studie aan de hand van het literaire oeuvre van Ousmane Sembène en Ngῦgῖ wa Thiong’o

Afrikaanse geschiedenis tussen feit en fictie

Postmoderne denkers wisten het al: een geschiedkundig werk is eigenlijk weinig anders dan een roman. In beide gevallen gaat het om een narratief met een begin en einde, verbonden door een causale opeenvolging van plottwists en verwikkelingen, gestoffeerd met welomlijnde protagonisten en motieven en hoe dan ook resulterend in een boodschap aan de lezer. Het zijn belles lettres die een werkelijkheid construeren. Eén werkelijkheid tussen vele. Geschiedenis en verhaal delen dus éénzelfde verhaaltechnisch DNA. In het Frans huizen ze zelfs onder één noemer: histoire. Hier willen we geenszins een dergelijk relativistisch statement maken over het historische  métier. Eerder stellen we vragen over het omgekeerde traject, dat van het literaire naar het historische aspect leidt. We vragen ons af waarom historici zo zelden geneigd lijken om over het muurtje te kijken dat het terrein van de wetenschap scheidt met dat van de kunst. Literatuur zegt namelijk niet alleen onnoemelijk veel over het verleden en hoe culturen haar een betekenis toeschrijven, het biedt als expliciete fictie ook een ondubbelzinnige kijk op het functioneren en opereren van histoires.   

 

Deze verhandeling wil de relatie tussen feitelijke en fictionele verhalen over het verleden verkennen aan de hand van een experimentele denkoefening. Plaats van het gebeuren is Afrika, een continent van welke de historische studie traditioneel zeer bewust omgaat met de aard van het bronmateriaal. Afrika wordt immers verondersteld een mondeling continent te zijn. Enige creativiteit vanwege doorgaans archiefminnende historici wordt er al langer aan de dag gelegd. Bovendien is de roman in Afrika geen vrijblijvende leverancier van cultureel verantwoorde ontspanning. De roman in Afrika is grotendeels een Europees importproduct dat mogelijkheden biedt om de sociale en politieke realiteit van commentaar te voorzien door haar te transponeren naar een fictieve setting, zonder daarbij ‘de waarheid’ te monopoliseren zoals historici wel eens lijken te doen. De historische context is het proces van de dekolonisatie. Een periode van ontluikend politiek bewustzijn, gevolgd door achtereenvolgens hoop op een rechtvaardigere samenleving en desillusie vanwege het uitblijven daarvan.

 

De auteurs wiens werk als staal dient voor dit experiment zijn niet van de minste. Beiden stellen ze nadrukkelijk tot doel om in hun oeuvre de samenleving te fileren en daarbij een morele wegwijzer te plaatsen, richtend op de toekomst en voortgaand op het verleden. Die analytische en ideologisch geïnspireerde opzet maakt hen net zo geschikt voor deze proef. De romanschrijver, theatermaker, academicus en bovenal polemist, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, is zonder twijfel Kenia’s beroemdste literator. Zijn romans omvatten het emotionele leven van allerhande individuen binnen alle échelons van de (post)koloniale samenleving, dit vanuit een onmiskenbaar marxistisch geïnspireerde visie op maatschappelijke verandering. Ngũgĩ heeft naast zijn romans en theaterstukken een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid essays en literatuurwetenschappelijke bespiegelingen nagelaten. Hierin roemt hij als voorbeeld van de geëngageerde auteur de andere stem die in deze scriptie aanhoren wordt: Ousmane Sembène. Deze Senegalese cineast en auteur belichaamt de sociaal realistische tendens in de artistieke representatie van Afrika’s wedervaren in de twintigste eeuw. Beide auteurs leveren in deze verhandeling twee romans aan, een ‘vroeg’ en een ‘laat’ werk uit hun oeuvre, die volgens enkele recepten uit diverse wetenschappelijke disciplines vanuit historiografische optiek opnieuw worden geëvalueerd. Door tegenstellingen tussen Oost en West-Afrika, Engelstalig en Franstalig, en het koloniale en postkoloniale tijdvak, wil deze bijdrage een zo groot mogelijke geografische, culturele en sociaal-politieke verscheidenheid omvatten.  

 

Het project is daarmee tweeledig. Eerst komt een theoretische reflectie over de waarde van literatuur als bron, waar een antwoord wordt gezocht op het waarheidsvraagstuk omtrent fictie. Een eerste deel gaat daarom op zoek naar technieken die op consequente wijze ‘waarheden’ distilleren uit een fictioneel discours. Ook wordt stilgestaan bij de positie die de roman inneemt in Afrika, zijnde als ventilator van intellectuele stellingnames en registrator van heersende sociale en politieke mechanismen. In een tweede deel volgt de toepassing. De vier romans worden contextueel geanalyseerd, intertekstueel geduid en literatuurwetenschappelijk in verband gebracht met de poëtica die beide auteurs aanhangen. De ultieme doelstelling is niet alleen het duiden van de historische contexten waarbinnen hun werk zich situeert vanuit een alternatief perspectief, maar ook het blootleggen van de mechanismen waarmee de romans de realiteit percipiëren en (re)presenteren.

 

Een zoektocht naar alternatieve discoursuitingen dat tegelijk de relativiteit van hen allen onderstreept lijkt nogal snel te verzanden in een oeverloos postmodernistisch gepalaver. Deze these wil echter geen bestaande aannames reduceren, maar veeleer pleiten voor het naast elkaar laten gedijen van strijdige visies. Het is slechts veelvormigheid die waarheid tot kennis kan doen leiden. Daarom is het net belangrijk zich bewust te tonen van het narratieve karakter van betekenis-geven aan heden en verleden. Weinig geschreven discoursvormen spelen daarbij zo sterk met de consequenties van het aangenomen perspectief als de roman. Zij neemt de vrijheid om invalshoeken om te keren, om de realiteit anders te kadreren, om betekenissen te doen conflicteren en waarheden te laten contrasteren. In al haar subversiviteit helpt literatuur vermijden dat één perspectief op de werkelijkheid, vertaald in één discours over die werkelijkheid, zo dominant wordt dat het een allesoverheersende proportie aanneemt. Wanneer vandaag op heel wat plaatsen in de wereld de grenzen van de artistieke vrijheid worden aangespannen, is het misschien noodzakelijker dan ooit om fictie als vorm van kritiek op de werkelijkheid te koesteren en te beschermen, niet in het minst binnen het wetenschappelijk onderzoek.
