Lettuce growth model to support selection and cultivation on Mars

Enkel de sterkste planten voor Mars

Terwijl op dit moment Mars wordt verkend door rovers en satellieten bereiden de grote ruimtevaartagentschappen zich voor op de kolonisatie van de rode planeet door bemande vluchten. Maar in tegenstelling tot hun robotische evenkniën brengt dit een nood aan het groeien van planten op de planeet voor voedsel- en zuurstofproductie. Het oppervlak op Mars is compleet onbewoonbaar voor planten. Daarvoor worden speciale groeimodules voorgesteld voor de Marskolonies waar men enkel de meest productieve varianten van bepaalde groenten zoals sla of tomaat zou telen. Maar hoe weet men van alle honderden soorten eetbare sla of tomaten, welke de snelst groeiende variant is?

De grote ruimtevaartorganisaties zoals NASA maar ook private organisaties hebben de ambitie Mars te koloniseren in de vroege jaren 2030. De laatste jaren lag de nadruk op het ontwikkelen van de technologie die de goederen en astronauten in de ruimte dient te krijgen. Denk maar aan de Falcon raketfamilie van SpaceX die sinds 2015 in staat is ruimtecapsules of satellieten naar de ruimte te brengen en terug veilig te landen op aarde voor hergebruik. Maar in de toekomst zou deze nadruk kunnen verschuiven naar de technologie die nodig is om de astronauten in leven te houden. Een shift van techniek naar biologie. Om de astronauten te kunnen voorzien in voedsel en ook zuurstof wordt de productie van planten op de rode planeet overwogen aangezien het herhaaldelijk transport van voedsel te duur zou zijn.
 

Planten telen op Mars is geen evidentie. De planeet is compleet onleefbaar voor leven zoals wij die kennen op aarde. De meest voor de hand liggende limitatie hierin is de schijnbare afwezigheid van water. ‘Schijnbaar’, aangezien water in 2015 wel ontdekt is op Mars, maar enkel in de vorm van een hoog zoutgeconcentreerde oplossing die enkel voorkomt als donkere strepen of lineae tijdens warme seizoenen. Maar stel dat water continu voorradig zou zijn of toegediend kan worden is de planeet nog altijd te koud, heerst er een veel te lage atmosferische druk en wordt het oppervlak continu bezaaid met schadelijke stralingen. De planeet kent een onvergeeflijke gemiddelde temperatuur van -55°C en kent een druk die maar 6.25% bedraagt van de Aardse atmosfeer. Zo een lage druk zorgt voor een acute uitdroging van de plant ongeacht de luchtvochtigheid. Door de planeet zijn lagere massa is de magnetosfeer zwak en de atmosfeer dun. Een plant of persoon zou continu onderhevig zijn aan hoge dosissen UV-straling en ioniserende straling wat resulteert in weefselschade en risico op kanker. Deze stralingswaarden kunnen zelfs met een factor 38 extremere waarden aannemen gedurende zonnewinden. Verder is de bodem niet vruchtbaar door de hoge concentratie aan perchloraten. Gelukkig zijn deze obstakels overkombaar door de planten te telen in groeimodules met een dikke beschermlaag met een gecontroleerde druk en temperatuur. De laatste factor is moeilijker te reconstrueren en dat is gravitatie. De zwaartekracht op Mars is 38% van deze op aarde desondanks is deze kleinere zwaartekracht nog voldoende om gravitropisme toe te laten, wat betekent dat planten boven van onder kunnen onderscheiden en waardoor de mogelijkheid bestaat voor planten om hier groeien.
 

In theorie is het telen van planten in gespecialiseerde groeimodules dus mogelijk. Onder specifieke klimaatomstandigheden zoals temperatuur, CO2-concentratie en instraling via LEDs kan een plant geteeld worden op een zodanige manier dat de plant zijn maximale productiviteit haalt. De laatste vraag waar we op stuiten voor het ontwikkelen van een plantenproductiesysteem is welke variëteit van een bepaalde sla, of tomatensoort we dienen te telen. De selectie van een sneller groeiende slasoort bespaart veel geld aan grondstoffen en energie. Deze selectie is niet zo eenvoudig gezien men voor sla alleen al honderden eetbare variëteiten kent die ogenschijnlijk hetzelfde zijn.

Op dit probleem bood dit onderzoek een oplossing aan om planten te gaan onderscheiden op fysiologisch niveau. Hiervoor werden er verschillende slavariëteiten geteeld in het proefcentrum Sint Katelijne Waver waarvan men gedurende de groeiperiode de klimaatomstandigheden registreerde en fotosynthese metingen uitvoerde. Hier werd er o.a. gekeken naar hoeveel CO2 de plant opneemt, naar hoeveel CO2 de plant produceert ’s nachts en naar de geleiding van CO2 doorheen zijn weefsels. De opname door CO2 werd gemeten door een apparaat dat het verschil tussen de ingaande en uitgaande CO2 meet aan de hand van de absorptie van een infrarood laser door deze CO2 moleculen. Deze plantspeficieke parameters werden verwerkt in modellen geïmplelenteerd voor dit onderzoek. De modellen voorspelden de groei van de gemeten plant onder bepaalde klimaatomstandigheden. Door de groei te voorspellen bij klimaatomstandigheden specifiek voor de groeimodules kon bepaald worden welke plant het meest geschikt was voor de groei op Mars zonder deze werkelijk te doen groeien gedurende weken onder deze condities.

De modellen waren in staat om de groei te benaderen maar konden dit nog niet doen voor alle geëvalueerde planten. Deze modellen en diens verdere uitwerkingen zullen ons in staat stellen om de best groeiende groenten te onderscheiden door het ingeven van meetbare plantspecifieke parameters. Men kan snel vele planten variëteiten screenen naar hun productiviteit op Mars. Ook voor de Vlaamse serreteelt kennen deze modellen hun nut. Zo kan dit model omgekeerd toegepast worden om bij een specifieke plant na te gaan wat de beste temperatuur, instralingsniveau en CO2 concentratie is.
