Decoding Metacognitive Sensitivity from EEG using Deep Learning.

KU Leuven
2024

Vanden Abeele
Metacognition, the ability to think about one's thinking processes, is vital for
professional performance, academic achievement, and mental health. However, its
ambiguous nature and subjective measurement techniques across various fields have
posed significant challenges to research. Cognitive neuroscience offers a unique
solution by providing objective measurements that link metacognition to brain activity,
thereby establishing a ground truth. Recently, the convergence of explainable artificial
intelligence (XAI) and perceptual decision-making, a subsection of metacognition
within cognitive neuroscience, has led to the development of the WaveFusion
framework. This innovative framework holds the potential to contribute to the
unification of the fragmented metacognition research fields.
The aim of this thesis was to enhance the WaveFusion framework, an explainable
deep learning model, to classify metacognitive sensitivity and confidence using EEG
data. The objectives were (1) to achieve a classification accuracy of 95% for
metacognitive sensitivity, (2) to improve the accuracy for metacognitive confidence to
97.5%, and (3) to identify key ambiguities and limitations in metacognition research.
This study utilized an EEG dataset with event-related potentials (ERP) responselocked for type 1 decisions. Data preprocessing addressed dataset imbalances
through augmentation and balanced batch sampling. EEG samples were transformed
into spectrograms and processed using the deep learning architecture comprising a
Lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (LWCNN), a Squeeze and Excitation
Network (SEN), and a classification network. The model was pre-trained using Subject
Aware Contrastive loss (SAC) and trained with binary cross-entropy loss. SEN
facilitated the models explainability by visualizing the created attention weights
through topoplots, providing insights into brain areas used for classification.
The WaveFusion model achieved high classification accuracy, reaching 99.7% for
metacognitive confidence and 99.1% for metacognitive sensitivity. These
improvements were due to a larger selection of electrodes, response-locked ERP
data, and increased dataset size. The WaveFusion model not only demonstrates high
classification accuracy but also offers enhanced explainability. This allows the
framework to contribute to three major ambiguities: (1) the relationship between
metacognition and executive functions, (2) its connection to consciousness, and (3)
the domain generality of metacognition. By leveraging the WaveFusion framework, we
can overcome limitations in cognitive neuroscience research through (1) utilizing
transfer learning to compare relationships, (2) employing automatic classification to
investigate ecological validity, and (3) expanding the framework for multimodality to
integrate insights across various fields.
Future research should focus on increasing data variability, addressing outlier
performances, and improving interpretability through advanced visualization
techniques to enhance the WaveFusion model’s robustness and applicability across
cognitive neuroscience domains.

Saint Ignatius' Letter to the Romans: a study on the Greek MS Tor. C.I.10 and the Slavonic MSS Ath. Chil. 644 and Vindob. Slav. 33.

Universiteit Gent
2024
Evelyne
Diels
My paper will discuss the results of my MA Thesis, defended at Ghent University. In this context, I will focus on the philological and linguistic outcomes, alongside a presentation of the sources and the methodology I adopted. In particular, my presentation will first introduce Saint Ignatius' Letter to the Romans alongside its Greek and Slavonic manuscript tradition.
Among the corpus of seven letters attributed to Ignatius of Antioch, a second-century bishop of Antioch, the Letter to the Romans (CPG 1025.4) is very interesting. It was addressed to the community in Rome after Ignatius, sentenced to death, had to travel to Rome. The Letter to the Romans differs from the others since it is the only letter embedded in the Martyrdom of Ignatius = Passio (BHG 0813) – given its content related to Ignatius’ visions on martyrdom. Furthermore, it is the sole Ignatius’ letter to have been translated into Slavonic. Nine manuscripts transmit the Passio Ignatii (BHG 0813) in Greek. Seventeen manuscripts, dated or datable between the fourteenth and the sixteenth century, preserve the Slavonic version of Ignatius’ Passio and are known in South Slavic and East Slavic redactions. Next to the Greek and Slavonic versions, it has Syriac, Arabic, Latin, Armenian and Georgian translations too. The poster also gives an account of the complex tradition of the Slavonic version(s). My focus is on the Pre-Metaphrastic version (BHG 0813), dated before the tenth-century revision of Symeon Metaphrastes (BHG 0815).
Among the Greek manuscripts, my presentation will concentrate on the so-termed Taurinensis (Torino, BNU, C.I.10 - Diktyon 63833) because, unlike other Greek manuscripts, it displays a remarkable closeness with the Slavonic manuscripts, especially with the witnesses of the earliest South Slavic version. These involve the Codex Athous Chilandaricus 644, an early fourteenth-century paper codex in Serbian orthography and the Manuscript of Vienna (Wien, ÖNB, Vindobonensis slav. 33), a late fourteenth-century reading also in Serbian orthography.
Furthermore, my thesis touches upon the methodologies I adopt to investigate my sources: palaeography, cultural linguistics, and translation theories. The palaeographic part entails comprehending the palaeographic and codicological characteristics of the manuscripts (deciphering, reading and dating a manuscript).

Autonomic function parameters are predictors of increased limitations in Activities of Daily Living after a 2-year follow-up period in octogenarians: a prospective longitudinal study

Vrije Universiteit Brussel
2024
Jordy
Saren
Background: Neurogenic orthostatic hypotension and blood pressure variability (BPV) may be considered as additional clinical parameters to evaluate pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical preventive interventions. This is particularly relevant if these parameters predict difficulties in performing Activities of Daily Living (ADL).

Aim: To explore the predictive value of autonomic function parameters for alternations in ADL mediated by changes in locomotor function in relatively robust octogenarians after a 2-year follow-up period.

Methods: This prospective longitudinal study included 267 participants (mean age: 82.98 ± 2.87 years) from the BUTTERFLY study. Data were collected at baseline and after 6, 12, and 24 months. The two-year follow-up period enabled the examination of both direct and indirect influences of autonomic function on the decline in ADL, mediated by changes in locomotor function, using PROCESS macro mediating logistic regression analysis.

Results: Systolic supine-to-stand BPV was associated with increased dependency in advanced ADL (unstandardized beta = 0.160, p<0.001) after a two-year follow-up in adults aged 80 and above. Visit-to-visit systolic BPV indirectly predicted more a-ADL limitations, mediated by changes in gait speed during year 1. No direct or indirect impact of autonomic function on b-ADL or i-ADL was observed after two years.

Conclusion: Our prospective study demonstrated that various autonomic function parameters predicted increased limitations in ADL among octogenarians after a two-year follow-up period. Consensus on threshold values for defining high BPV is essential for its clinical implementation, even in low cardiovascular risk cohorts.

Olivier
Cauberghs
This dissertation explores how video games, gaming culture, and gamification
strategies are employed by (violent) extremist and terrorist individuals and organisations to disseminate propaganda. The literature review commences by providing the current state of knowledge on the topic, including the correlation between video games and violence, and why extremist and terrorist content in the gaming community demands our undivided
attention.

Thereafter, the study delves into the historical context of online extremism, tracing
its evolution from the digital pioneers of the 1980s to the modern challenges faced today. It further investigates the strategies employed by (violent) extremist and terrorist organisations in video games, including the modification of existing games to disseminate violent extremist messages, and the use of in-game communication for recruitment and radicalisation.

This dissertation also examines online gaming and gaming adjacent platforms like
Steam, Twitch, Discord, etc. and their potential role in this context. Furthermore, it will
investigate the extent to which they are utilised and whether their usage is restricted to
specific ideologies.

Finally, it examines gaming culture references, both visual and linguistic, in the
communication strategies employed by (violent) extremist and terrorist people and
organisations.

This dissertation will conclude that (violent) extremist and terrorist individuals and
organisations fully exploit video games and modifications to spread their ideology, gaming (adjacent) platforms for community building and communication and gamification strategies to recruit and radicalise individuals. It is not confined to far-right and Jihadist ideology but encompasses a broad range of ideologies. Gamification techniques are commonly used to disseminate their respective ideologies, build communities, and recruit and radicalise individuals.

Building resilience to climate change: impact of mulching on the soil water balance and potato growth

Universiteit Gent
2024
Oluwadamilare Emmanuel
Oloyede
Climate change has a significant impact on agricultural production because of its reliance on
environmental factors. Like in most parts of the world, the climate in Belgium is changing with
projections of increase in winter precipitation and decrease in summer precipitation. With
accompanying higher temperatures, evaporation will increase, and water availability will decrease,
especially in summer. It then becomes necessary to efficiently manage soil water for sustainable
crop production. While conservation agriculture is a promising climate smart agricultural
technology, it is often considered with less focus on mulching, one of the pillars of CA. In cases
where mulching has been studied, it was mostly under conventional tillage system, and about yield
and greenhouse gases emission. Since there is no one-size-fits all on soil water management. It is
imperative to conduct strategies suitable to local conditions. Potato is a staple crop in Belgium,
and it is drought sensitive. This makes it susceptible to effects of climate change. Therefore, this
research studied the impacts of mulching, under reduced tillage, on soil water balance and potato
growth as an adaptation strategy to climate change in the Flemish agricultural context.
A field experiment was conducted on a bio-parcel of the Flanders research institute for agriculture,
fisheries and food in Melle, East Flanders, Blegium. This study evaluated the effects of two
different mulch thickness (6 cm and 12 cm) against bare soil (no mulch) on evapotranspiration
(ET), potato growth, yield and water use efficiency (WUE). An adapted soil water balance
equation was used to determine ET; plant height and leaf area index (LAI) were used as parameter
of crop growth; and WUE was determined as a quotient of yield and ET. Data collected were
subjected to analysis of variance and significantly different means were separated using Tukey’s
Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) at 5% level of significance.
This study revealed that soil structural quality and soil water content improved under mulch; 12
cm mulch performed best in preventing drought stress during low rainfall; ET increased with
increasing mulch thickness though not significantly; 12 cm mulch significantly increased LAI
compared to other treatments; and yield and WUE were not significantly different among the
treatments though 6 cm and 12 cm mulch increased yield by 7.4% and 10.9% respectively.

Human T-cell leukaemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a major problem in highly endemic regions and is the causative agent for adult T-cell leukaemia and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. To date, no cure is available for either of these diseases, yet prevention of HTLV-1 infection has proven to be a viable option. The HTLV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) enzyme provides an interesting drug target due to its vital function in the viral replication. In this thesis, we aim to obtain the structure of HTLV-1 RT via single-particle cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and gain insight into the mechanisms it employs to perform its DNA polymerase function. In the first part, an extensive analysis was conducted on phylogeny, gene ontology, and homology, where we found HTLV-1 RT to have great similarity to both human immunodeficiency virus type 1 RT and human endogenous retrovirus K RT. Following this, a physiologically relevant model of HTLV-1 RT in complex with a nucleic acid dimer was constructed and used in an antiviral compound docking study. In the second part, multiple plasmids were designed to express HTLV-1 RT in various forms and were transformed into multiple Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains for recombinant protein expression. After induction, HTLV-1 RT was isolated using nickel-histidine affinity chromatography. Here, the recombinant protein yield remained very low, which prompted us to perform an in-depth analysis of the HTLV-1 RT encoding mRNA. Via RT-qPCR, significant variation in mRNA expression levels between constructs was observed, but the presence of HTLV-1 RT encoding mRNA was confirmed. In silico RNA folding of the HTLV-1 RT mRNA suggested the occurrence of a highly stable GC-rich hairpin loop at the 5’ end of the mRNA. In conclusion, we substantiated the link between HIV-1 RT and HTLV-1 RT necessary to validate the effort in
screening anti-HIV-1 RT compounds against HTLV-1 RT. Furthermore, by docking these compounds into a physiologically relevant in silico model of HTLV-1 RT, we showed that some of those would favourably bind to HTLV-1 RT’s polymerase active site with sub-nanomolar affinity. Additionally, we successfully expressed and isolated HTLV-1 RT in low quantities. This low yield is most likely explained by the presence of a highly stable GC-rich hairpin loop at the 5’ end of the mRNA, reducing the ribosomes' binding capacity for successful translation. Although we succeeded in expressing HTLV-1 RT, higher quantities are required to perform structural studies. In the future, once sufficient protein is obtained, a high-resolution model of HTLV-1 RT can be constructed, which will allow for high-throughput drug screening and the development of HTLV-1 RT-specific drugs, for which there is a great need.

KU Leuven
2024
Brecht
Berteloot
Genomineerde longlist Klasseprijs
This study reconstructs the creative writing pedagogy of Guido Gezelle at the Klein Seminarie
in Roeselare, drawing on both previous publications and previously unexplored student
exercises. These exercises are linked to Gezelle's debut poetry collection, Vlaemsche
Dichtoefeningen (1858), and other relevant primary sources. This thesis is divided into three
chapters, each addressing different facets of Gezelle's teaching methods to provide a
comprehensive understanding of his educational practices.
Chapter one presents a portrait of Guido Gezelle, emphasizing his youth and education,
which significantly influenced his teaching style. Gezelle's deep appreciation for nature, his
strong advocacy for the Flemish language, and his educational background were pivotal in
shaping his approach to creative writing teaching. His initial experiences as a teacher, coupled
with his relationship with Bp. Malou, who played a crucial role in Gezelle's life from the
beginning of his priesthood, are also discussed. Despite his preference to be a missionary in
England, Gezelle's dedication to teaching proved to be the catalyst for his dual vocation as a
poet and priest. His so-called particularistic stance on the Flemish language, his Catholic faith,
his accessible approach to poetry, and his close bonds with his students were fundamental to
his teaching practice.
Chapter two examines the broader educational context of the turbulent 19th century and
its implications for Gezelle's teaching environment. This chapter, along with the first,
addresses how the educational context at the Klein Seminarie influenced Gezelle's teaching.
The school's curriculum emphasized character and attitude formation inspired by humanistic
ideals. Gezelle's pedagogical approach balanced formal rigor with creative freedom,
emphasizing language and its musicality. His methods aimed to cultivate a deep appreciation
for the technical and aesthetic aspects of poetry among his students.
The third chapter offers a detailed analysis of the primary sources, including Gezelle's
Vlaemsche Dichtoefeningen and the various student exercises. These exercises, which cover a
wide range of topics such as alliteration, imitation, translation, current events, nature
descriptions, literary adaptations, and miracle stories, provide insights into Gezelle's teaching
methods. His pedagogical practices were advanced for their time, incorporating tailored
instruction, differentiated difficulty levels, feedback, and relevance to the students' lives.
In short, this study sheds light on Gezelle's creative writing pedagogy at the Klein
Seminarie, offering a nuanced understanding of his methods. While many questions remain
unanswered, this study provides an introductory framework on which future research can
build.

Is it possible to predict the area-level prevalence of COVID-19 infections in Belgium by
analyzing self-reported symptoms on Twitter? This research project is about generating
estimates of the incidence of COVID-19 infections, at the municipality level, by using
Multilevel Regression Post-Stratification (MrP) to account for sampling biases in the social
media sample. At first, tweets are obtained from users based on keywords derived from
previous research, e.g., tweets mentioning fever, cough, loss of taste, fatigue, etc. Then, key
demographic and geographical features of interest are extracted using the M3 deep learning
pipeline, as well as simple self-reported characteristics, effectively transforming the
unstructured twitter sample into a survey-like object. Finally, based on these demographic
features and census characteristics, a mixed effects logistic regression model with
post-stratification according to the Belgian census is proposed to forecast the number of
infected individuals on a particular day. This study intends to contribute to the proof of
concept of a complete end to end pipeline to perform real time predictions of disease
prevalence at a granular level in a population using social media data.

Belgium had a turbulent electronic music scene during the 1990s, with a free, extravagant club scene and rocksolid music production. Unfortunately, this changed with repressive government actions against allegedly high drug consumption in nightclubs, Belgium's emerging electronic music festivals as competitors and increasingly difficult, obtainable party licences. Clubs are disappearing as fast as they were established, but something new is bubbling underground. As was the case earlier in Britain, France and the Netherlands, Belgian collectives are holding parties in forests, squats, fields, industrial estates and abandoned office buildings. These illegal raves or free parties are organised by soundsystem crews consisting of DJs, sound engineers, artists and music lovers. On the basis of interviews with five organisers and two partygoers, this study attempts to gain an insight into how these parties come about and what significance they acquire in the development of participants' individual and collective identities.

Auteur: Amrani Nisrine
Interne promotor: Vermeulen Joeri
Externe promotor: Debonnet Serena
Introductie:
Sommige artikels spreken elkaar tegen of geven tegenstrijdige informatie.

In 2008, Christian Boer developed a font named “Dyslexie” which was designed to facilitate the reading process of people with dyslexia. The little amount of research that has been done on the impact of this font remains inconclusive. This investigation intends to gain a broader view on its impact by studying three factors of the reading process: reading speed, reading comprehension and reader preference. The Dyslexie font was compared with Times New Roman and Arial. The experiment was performed with 180 participants, both dyslectic and non-dyslectic. The results show that Dyslexie enhances the reading speed for all participants, however not significantly. Times New Roman showed the best reading comprehension while Arial was the most preferred font. The contradictory findings show that further interdisciplinary and detailed investigation on the influence of dyslexia is needed.
