The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a large entertainment franchise that engages in
transmedia storytelling, or the spreading of narrative content over multiple media. This
implies both transfictionality (the sharing of story elements over multiple texts) and
transmediality (the spreading of texts over multiple media). As transmedial franchises
become increasingly prevalent, a thorough narratological analysis is needed in order to
understand the way in which their stories are told. This thesis attempts to develop a
method for describing the narrative structure of this transmedia storytelling by means of
Marie-Laure Ryan’s idea of the storyworld as a guiding framework. We begin by outlining
key theoretical definitions of transmediality and storyworlds as explained by Ryan in
order to establish a theoretical foundation. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is then
introduced as a solid case to explore these concepts. First, we focus on the notion of
transfictionality within several individual subfranchises of the MCU, diachronically
tracing how self-contained narratives gradually converge into a larger shared universe,
forcing the audience to constantly rethink the MCU’s storyworld. We analyse the impact
of this phenomenon by looking at the converging of the subfranchises’ ontologies in a
narrative content – such as film, television, theme parks, video games and comics – to
understand their role in building and complicating the storyworld. We conclude that
some formats are canonically more central than other formats, and that contradictions
can arise between these and the dominant cinematic narrative. Finally, we explore the
impact of the multiverse as a narrative device within the MCU, particularly its role in
integrating alternate storyworlds – including storyworlds from different media or
unrelated cinematic franchises. A conclusion presents a view of the MCU in which we
should distinguish the notion of the storyworld on several narrative levels, highlighting
the complexity of a narratological analysis in a transmedia context.

Deze studie onderzoekt het gebruik van serious games in het bevorderen van kennisverwerving over Phytophthora cinnamomi (Pc), een invasieve bodemaandoening die het Mediterrane eikecosysteem in Spanje bedreigt. Gebaseerd op de cognitieve taxonomie van Bloom heeft het onderzoek als doel te evalueren welke specifieke spelelementen (trivia, quiz, spelbeheer en spelsituaties) de vijf cognitieve denkprocessen ondersteunen, en of serious games kunnen dienen als effectieve hulpmiddelen om via de Cognitive Sustainability Compass reflectie over duurzaamheid te stimuleren.

Silent Spread, een digitaal bordspel, werd ontwikkeld en gespeeld door 35 studenten op universitair niveau. De PLS-SEM-analyse toont aan dat Silent Spread middelhoge tot hogere denkvaardigheden bevordert, waarbij analyseren de sterkste rol speelt in het aanleren van verspreidingsmechanismen.

De sessies met de Cognitive Sustainability Compass tonen aan dat vooral de sociale pijler van duurzaamheid werd benadrukt, met thema’s als samenwerkend leren en een sterkere verbondenheid met rurale realiteiten. De studie onderstreept dat serious games vooral het toepassen van kennis stimuleren in plaats van enkel het onthouden van feiten. Daarom moet toekomstig onderzoek nagaan hoe deze spellen het leren binnen én buiten de virtuele omgeving kunnen versterken. Daarnaast stelt de studie het hiërarchisch model van Bloom in vraag en benadrukt ze dat de 21e eeuw nood heeft aan vaardigheden zoals samenwerking, probleemoplossend denken en systeemdenken, die spelers met succes hebben aangetoond.

This policy report thesis explores the evolution of Anticipatory Action since its inception, tracing the roots from early pilot projects led by the German Red Cross in 2013 to the current usage across multiple countries. The research delves into the complexities of this approach, examining how it has been implemented, the lessons learned, and the potential for scaling up this initiative to ensure they become integral components of national disaster risk management frameworks.

The research identifies key trends in AA plans, highlighting the shift from small-scale pilot projects to more sustainable and widespread implementations. However, it also uncovers continuous challenges, including funding limitations, coordination issues among stakeholders, and the technical complexities linked with accurate forecasting.

This dissertation explores how video games, gaming culture, and gamification
strategies are employed by (violent) extremist and terrorist individuals and organisations to disseminate propaganda. The literature review commences by providing the current state of knowledge on the topic, including the correlation between video games and violence, and why extremist and terrorist content in the gaming community demands our undivided
attention.

Thereafter, the study delves into the historical context of online extremism, tracing
its evolution from the digital pioneers of the 1980s to the modern challenges faced today. It further investigates the strategies employed by (violent) extremist and terrorist organisations in video games, including the modification of existing games to disseminate violent extremist messages, and the use of in-game communication for recruitment and radicalisation.

This dissertation also examines online gaming and gaming adjacent platforms like
Steam, Twitch, Discord, etc. and their potential role in this context. Furthermore, it will
investigate the extent to which they are utilised and whether their usage is restricted to
specific ideologies.

Finally, it examines gaming culture references, both visual and linguistic, in the
communication strategies employed by (violent) extremist and terrorist people and
organisations.

This dissertation will conclude that (violent) extremist and terrorist individuals and
organisations fully exploit video games and modifications to spread their ideology, gaming (adjacent) platforms for community building and communication and gamification strategies to recruit and radicalise individuals. It is not confined to far-right and Jihadist ideology but encompasses a broad range of ideologies. Gamification techniques are commonly used to disseminate their respective ideologies, build communities, and recruit and radicalise individuals.

Anthropogenic activities across various land uses (e.g. roadsides, industrial areas,
agricultural zones) have introduced xenobiotics, substances not natural to the
ecosystem, in the environment, affecting soil physiochemical characteristics and soil
bacterial communities. To adapt to this changing environment, bacteria have evolved
to withstand these harsh conditions. Insertion sequences (IS) can form composite
transposons that recruit and carry along passenger genes, including those involved in
the degradation of organic pollutants. However, studies examining IS elements
abundance and its cargo in bacterial communities within their natural context is limited.
The purpose of this thesis is to improve our knowledge of the role of the IS element
IS6100 in genetic adaptation within soil bacterial communities. This research focused
on two parts, the first part on Pakistani soil samples that determined how bacterial
community structure and abundance of IS6100 associates with land uses, spatial, and
environmental factors. Land use and location exerted significant influence on alpha
and beta diversity in soil ecosystems, notably with agricultural soil demonstrating
higher diversity due to increased disturbance. While environmental factors such as Cu,
total nitrogen, As, Cd, and total carbon contribute to soil bacterial community variability,
their impact is relatively small compared to land use in shaping soil bacterial
composition. Nevertheless, 86% unexplained variability suggests the presence of
additional important factors that were not measured in our study. IS6100 is
widespread, with no differences in abundance across various geographic Pakistani
samples with differing land use. While effects of environmental factors including
community diversity was low, some toxic contaminants like DiPCB and TriPCB
exhibited a negative correlation with IS6100 abundance. The second part examined
contaminated soils in Belgium, assessing IS6100 abundance by qPCR. Moreover, a
new long-range PCR (LR-PCR) method was applied to amplify the cargo of IS6100
associated CTs for functional analysis by nanopore sequencing. IS6100 was present
across all samples, with significant variations in relative abundance between soils.
Particularly, soil samples continuously exposed to pesticides exhibited elevated
IS6100 abundances compared to those with less clear contaminants. Regarding cargo
genes identification, clear bands in the AGE for every sample suggested that the LR
PCR IS6100 cargo genes were successfully and reproducibly amplified. The amplicons
were successfully sequenced by nanopore sequencing for future functional analysis.

We onderzoeken hoe wetenschappelijk bewijs van het verband tussen drivers van klimaatverandering en de impact en schade die ze veroorzaken, vertaald wordt naar juridisch bewijs van causaliteit in de rechtzaal. De wetenschap is in staat is om met hoge betrouwbaarheid causale verbanden aan te tonen. Samen met nieuwe juridische benaderingen vergroot dat de kansen op succes voor eisers in klimaatzaken.

Is it possible to predict the area-level prevalence of COVID-19 infections in Belgium by
analyzing self-reported symptoms on Twitter? This research project is about generating
estimates of the incidence of COVID-19 infections, at the municipality level, by using
Multilevel Regression Post-Stratification (MrP) to account for sampling biases in the social
media sample. At first, tweets are obtained from users based on keywords derived from
previous research, e.g., tweets mentioning fever, cough, loss of taste, fatigue, etc. Then, key
demographic and geographical features of interest are extracted using the M3 deep learning
pipeline, as well as simple self-reported characteristics, effectively transforming the
unstructured twitter sample into a survey-like object. Finally, based on these demographic
features and census characteristics, a mixed effects logistic regression model with
post-stratification according to the Belgian census is proposed to forecast the number of
infected individuals on a particular day. This study intends to contribute to the proof of
concept of a complete end to end pipeline to perform real time predictions of disease
prevalence at a granular level in a population using social media data.

This is making the companies adapt through the search for new solutions to become as efficient as possible. In particular, e-commerce is becoming more relevant in the business world, which has a prominent role in influencing customers’ behavior.

There has been countless research on why well-integrated European youth become interested in radical Islam. This research will explore what radicalism and extremism mean within the context of far-right radicalisation. Extreme right figures and their ideologies have gained prominence in Western society. The journey towards upholding these ideologies isn't easy to document. We speak of a 'far-right pipeline'. An individual isn’t instantly converted but rather nudged into a direction until they freefall. These new populist movements are different from the traditional radical right: They like to provoke and their spread happens entirely online. The author puts our current social media and political climate, and its effect on the young generation, in perspective. This research aims to build an understanding of how teenagers can be exposed to thinly veiled online radicalisation.

De scriptie presenteert de roman Under the Udala Trees van Chinelo Okparanta als 'profetisch' omwille van de capaciteit tot het bevechten van een plaats voor seksuele diversiteit binnen her Christendom in Nigeria. Via de analytische methode van close reading beschrijft de scriptie de strategieën die de roman gebruikt om die legitimatie te bekomen.

This master’s thesis examines the gendered constructions carried out by eighteenth-century Scottish gallows speeches from women condemned for infanticide. By analysing Lowland broadsides it argues that broadsides could contain authentic traces of lower class women’s voices. By confessing and making a ‘last speech’, women simultaneously made themselves subservient to authorities and acquired an agency to articulate their own opinions on their crime and sentencing. Moreover, they acquired a spiritual authority on the brink of their death, serving as an example on the gibbet which should not be followed, being able to warn others as they had confessed their sins and were about to face a higher judgement. Thus, this thesis argues, Scottish gallows speeches did not only serve to reinforce the judgement of authorities, but also to spread lower class, female opinions on the early modern justice system.

Deze bijdrage vergelijkt de verschillende actieve en passieve periodieke en niet-periodieke technieken op basis van de rentabiliteit in vier verschillende opstellingen door backtesting van de technieken op een geselecteerde reeks van 22 Europese wereldwijde aandelenfondsen.

Ontwikkeling van een eenvoudig patiëntenformulier dat de meest voorkomende klachten, diagnoses, behandelingen en relevante data registreert, automatisch verwerkt, rapporteert in elk mogelijke taal. De invoer vraagt nauwelijks schrijfwerk, de uitvoer ondersteunt de WHO minimal data standard, informeert de zorgvrager in zijn eigen taal en kan dienen als bron voor verder wetenschappelijk onderzoek.

Deze scriptie onderzoekt de vraag of en waarom de NIIP een verklarende variabele kan zijn voor rentespreads in Europa. Er wordt op zoek gegaan naar theoretische verklaringen en een empirische benadering voor deze relatie.

Deze masterproef gaat na of het mogelijk is om zinkvonken (EDM) toe te passen op koolstofcomposiet (CFRP). Er is over dit onderwerp weinig literatuur beschikbaar. Daarom wordt gestart met enkele experimenten. Deze tonen aan dat industrieel CFRP (???? = 0,01Ωcm) bewerkbaar is met vonkerosie. Een ruimer opgezet experimenteel onderzoek, bestudeert in tweede instantie de optredende materiaalafnamemechanismen en de invloed van het vonkproces op het materiaal. De volgende experimentele randvoorwaarden zijn daarbij van toepassing: een koperelektrode (Ø = 10mm) met negatieve polarisatie die 1mm diep vonkt. Een parameterbereik met stroom van 1 tot 65A en pulsduur van 0,8 tot 200µs. Verder wordt een machinefunctionaliteit gebruikt waardoor overige parameters automatisch optimaal worden geregeld. Het resultaat wordt onderzocht via een spaananalyse en microscopie, en SEM en EDX analyses toegepast op bewerkte doorsneden en oppervlakken. Dit laat toe om vier mogelijke optredende materiaalafnamemechanismen te verklaren. De verschillende experimenten resulteren ook in twee optimale vonktechnologieën. Met een statistische analyse wordt de relatie tussen de procesparameters en een aantal uitgangsgrootheden (MRR, Ra en randkwaliteit) onderzocht. De studie wordt afgerond met het onderzoeken van het effect van polarisatie; de invloed van een grafietelektrode; en een analyse van stroom en spanningspulsen via pulsmonitoring.

Nieuwe bankregels voldoen nietUit een onderzoek door de KU Leuven blijkt dat de nieuwe regels voor de bancaire sector niet voldoen. Deze regels, die zijn opgesteld na de financiële crisis moeten verhinderen dat een nieuwe crisis zich zou voordoen. CSR has been defined as a company’s status and activities with respect to its perceived societal or stakeholder obligations (Bhattacharya & Sen, 2004). The study investigates whether receiving information about CSR policies can influence consumers’ perceptions and their evaluation towards corporate social responsible companies.

Voor het goed afleveren van een eindproduct moet een ICT bedrijf tegenwoordig meer hebben dan enkel goede medewerkers. Vooral bij het beheer en opvolging van de verscheidene projecten komt er heel wat kijken. Al is dit voor een kleiner bedrijf niet altijd even makkelijk, ze kiezen meestal voor een ‘out of the box’-systeem dat niet volledig voldoet aan hun eisen. Het op maat maken van een eigen applicatie kost veel geld, of veel tijd wanneer het zelf intern gemaakt wordt.
