Babytaal bij koppels: goed voor een relatie, of juist niet?

Babytaal bij koppels…

Wanneer mensen me vragen over welk onderwerp ik mijn scriptie schreef, reageren ze telkens verbaasd en geïntrigeerd tegelijk. Babytaal bij koppels… Sommigen zullen geen flauw idee hebben wat ik hiermee bedoel, anderen zullen het onmiddellijk herkennen.

“Haasje, wil je mijn rugje krabben?”

Wat babytaal bij koppels inhoudt, is eigenlijk simpel. Als we tegen baby’s spreken, doen we dat op een andere manier dan tegen volwassenen. Sommige mensen spreken ook op zo’n manier tegen hun partner waarmee ze een romantische relatie hebben.

Meer specifiek spreken sommigen met hun partner soms op een hogere toon, op een schattigere en melodieuzere manier dan tegen andere volwassenen. Ook creëren sommige koppels doorheen hun relatie een ‘eigen taaltje’, wat anderen niet zouden kunnen begrijpen, door bijvoorbeeld het gebruik van afkortingen of van woorden die niet bestaan.

Een ingrediënt van een ‘goede’ relatie… Of juist niet?

Mijn eigen partnerrelatie en mijn interesse in relaties en communicatie, zorgden ervoor dat ik gebeten was om te weten wat het betekent om al dan niet in babytaal te communiceren. Zijn babytaal en een eigen gecreëerd taaltje een uiting van liefde? Of is het een teken dat we niet op een volwassen manier met onze partner kunnen communiceren? Werkt het verbindend? Of staat het juist in de weg van een diepere connectie? Waarom gebruiken sommige koppels het wel en andere niet? Zijn koppels die het wel gebruiken gelukkiger met hun relatie, of is het omgekeerd?

Al jaar en dag zijn wetenschappers geïnteresseerd in wat een relatie ‘goed’, ‘gezond’ en ‘duurzaam’ maakt. Ook vele vrijgezellen en koppels zijn geïnteresseerd in hoe ze een relatie kunnen starten, behouden of verbeteren. Misschien is babytaal bij koppels een geheim ingrediënt van een gelukkige, langdurige partnerrelatie… Of misschien juist niet? Met mijn scriptie probeerde ik een antwoord op deze vraag te vinden.

Een heel vernieuwend, een héél onder-onderzocht onderwerp…

Het gebruik van babytaal bij koppels is in het verleden nog maar één keer onderzocht geweest. En dat onderzoek gebeurde al meer dan 20 jaar geleden.

Daarom startte ik mijn onderzoek met het internet en sociale media uit te pluizen. Sociale media beschrijven babytaal als iets negatief. Zo wordt bijvoorbeeld gezegd dat babytaal afstotelijk is en  wordt het geassocieerd met mentale problemen en intimiteitsproblemen. Tegenover het gebruik van babytaal in een seksuele context lijken meningen nog negatiever.

 

Deskundigen, zoals psychologen, therapeuten en antropologen, uiten beweringen en hypotheses ten opzichte van babytaal. Sommigen beweren dat het goed is voor een relatie, anderen beweren dat het slecht is voor een relatie. Helaas zijn ook de beweringen van deskundigen niet op wetenschappelijk onderzoek gebaseerd.

Aangezien nog maar weinig tot niets over dit fenomeen geweten is, wou ik het bestaan van babytaal in romantische relaties zo breed mogelijk exploreren. Meer dan duizend participanten maakten dit mogelijk, door een – lange –  anonieme online vragenlijst in te vullen.

Babytaal bij koppels blijkt goed voor de relatie

Verrassend en interessant is dat álle resultaten consistent in dezelfde richting wijzen: babytaal zou goed zijn voor een relatie of een teken zijn van een goede relatie. Koppels die zich misschien een beetje zorgen maakten over hun babytaalgebruik, mogen op hun beide oren slapen.

Wat bleek, is dat babytaal bij koppels veel voorkomt: ongeveer 2/3e van de participanten gebruikt het in zijn of haar relatie. Het kwam bijna niet voor dat babytaal slechts door één van de twee gebruikt werd. Bijna iedereen gaf aan dat beide partners het gebruiken. Bovendien bleek dat koppels babytaal voornamelijk gebruiken als ze met hun partner alleen zijn, en veel minder in een publieke context.

Diegenen die babytaal gebruiken, rapporteerden meer relatiegeluk, een veiligere hechting aan hun partner en een hogere frequentie van affectiegedrag: meer kussen, knuffelen en seksuele activiteiten dan zij die geen babytaal gebruiken in hun relatie. Bovendien lijkt het aantal conversaties waarin babytaal gebruikt wordt er ook toe te doen: hoe meer, hoe beter! Personen die het meest babytaal gebruiken in hun relatie, vertonen ook de hoogste scores op relatiegeluk, hechting en affectiegedrag.

Wanneer koppels babytaal gebruiken, voelen ze zich voornamelijk liefdevol en geamuseerd. Ze gebruiken babytaal vooral om affectie te uiten en plezier te maken. Attitudes tegenover babytaal zijn, in tegenstelling tot wat sociale media doen uitschijnen, hoofdzakelijk positief: de meesten vinden babytaal liefdevol en een teken van liefde.

Verder werd ook babytaal in een seksuele context bevraagd. Ongeveer de helft van de bevraagden gebruikte babytaal ooit al in een seksuele context in zijn/haar huidige relatie. Daarbij blijkt dat babytaal het minst voorkomt tijdens een seksuele activiteit, meer vóór een seksuele activiteit en het meest na een seksuele activiteit. Net zoals knuffelen na een vrijpartij, zou babytaal ook verbindend kunnen werken.

Participanten staan negatiever tegenover babytaal in een seksuele context dan babytaal in het algemeen in relatie. Ze vinden babytaal in een seksuele context hoofdzakelijk ‘ongepast’. Nochtans geven ze bij hun babytaalgebruik in een seksuele context vooral positieve emoties aan. Ze gaven aan zich vooral liefdevol en verbonden te voelen. Negatieve emoties kwamen bijna niet voor.  De meest voorkomende redenen om babytaal te gebruiken in een seksuele context waren opnieuw ‘plezier maken’ en ‘affectie uiten’.

Negatieve stereotypes uit de wereld helpen

Moeten we nu allen babytaal beginnen gebruiken? Zeker niet, maar als je het wel gebruikt, hoeft dat zeker niet te stoppen. Onwetendheid bij (relatie/seks)therapeuten, wetenschappers en koppels zou er kunnen toe leiden dat zij onnodig babytaal bij koppels weg zouden proberen werken. Ik hoop de maatschappij, koppels en therapeuten te informeren over het bestaan en de positieve effecten van babytaal bij koppels en zo negatieve stereotypes uit de wereld te helpen.

Ik hoop koppels duidelijk te kunnen maken dat babytaal een verbindende communicatiestijl is waarmee je liefde kan uiten en waarmee liefde ook kan groeien en kan worden versterkt. En… niets is mooier dan liefde.
