Modejournalisten versus Instagraminfluencers: Geloofwaardigheid anno 2019 onder de loep. Een vergelijking tussen tijdschriften en Instagram.

#RECLAME: Disclosures geen oorzaak van negatieve attitude op Instagram

Uit onderzoek van de KU Leuven blijkt dat zogenaamde disclosures (dit zijn hashtags zoals ‘#sponsored’ die duidelijk maken dat het om reclame gaat) op Instagram niet zorgen voor een negatieve attitude ten opzichte van die Instagrampost. Ook werd er gevonden dat jongeren positiever tegenover tijdschriften staan in vergelijking met ouderen. 

Disclosures op Instagram komen bijvoorbeeld voor onder bepaalde hashtags (#sponsored, #reclame) of via de functie ‘betaald partnerschap met’, en hebben als doel de consument in één oogwenk duidelijk te maken dat het om reclame gaat. Uit vorig onderzoek bleek dat dergelijke hashtags ervoor zorgen dat Instagramgebruikers een negatieve attitude tegenover de influencer en het getoonde merk gaan ontwikkelen, het huidige onderzoek spreekt dit nu tegen. 

In mei vorig jaar publiceerde de Jury voor Ethische Praktijken al een eerste set richtlijnen waar online influencers zich aan moeten houden in verband met reclame maken op Instagram. Deze richtlijnen werden zeer snel weer ingetrokken, omdat ze nog niet gevalideerd zouden zijn. In oktober later dat jaar kwamen er dan officiële richtlijnen van de Raad voor Reclame. Het gebruik van specifieke hashtags of disclosures is daar één van. Hoewel het niet-gebruiken van de hashtags door influencers niet bestraft wordt, lijken de resultaten van het huidige onderzoek te suggereren dat er geen reden is om deze hasthags niet te gebruiken. 

Aan het onderzoek dat aan de KU Leuven in Brussel werd gevoerd, namen 290 respondenten deel, gaande van 15 tot en met 73 jaar. Uit de vragenlijst die zij invulden bleek dat het gebruik van een bepaalde hashtag op Instagram hen niet stoorde. Zowel de groep die de hashtag wél zag als de groep die het niet zag, gaf aan even positief te staan tegenover wat ze gezien hadden. Verrassend genoeg was er wel een ander verschil: zij die een disclosure te zien kregen, beoordeelden de post als minder geloofwaardig. 

Omdat Instagram vooral onder jongvolwassenen (16-29 jaar) erg populair is, werd er ook een artikel uit modetijdschrift Elle aan de respondenten getoond. Op voorhand werd verwacht dat de oudere leeftijdsgroep positiever hiertegenover ging staan dan de jongere leeftijdsgroep, maar het tegengestelde bleek waar. Uit de resultaten kwam de verrassende bevinding dat jongeren juist positiever staan en meer geloof hechten aan tijdschriftartikels. Een mogelijke verklaring zou het mere exposure effect kunnen zijn. Dit verschijnsel is afkomstig uit de psychologie, en houdt in dat wanneer je iets vaker ziet, je er positiever tegenover gaat staan. Aangezien de jongere respondenten in dit onderzoek aangaven vaker tijdschriften te lezen dan de oudere respondentengroep, kunnen zij dus door het mere exposure effect een positievere attitude gecreëerd hebben. 

Bijkomend bleek ook nog dat respondenten een disclosure in een tijdschriftartikel (bijvoorbeed ‘gesponsord’ of ‘in samenwerking met’) nauwelijks tot niet opmerkten. Maar liefst 80% van de respondenten die een dubbele disclosure in het tijdschriftartikel te zien kreeg, duidde later aan dat dit niet het geval was. 

De bevindingen uit dit onderzoek zijn vooral interessant voor marketeers. Waar vandaag vooral de overtuiging heerst dat Instagram moet ingezet worden om het jongerensegment te bereiken, beweren deze resultaten iets anders. Wat meer bereik krijgen met een jong kledingmerk? Probeer het eens op de oldschool manier, via een tijdschriftartikel. De post zal niet herkend worden als reclame, én het merk komt geloofwaardiger over.
