Jaarlijks 350 miljoen ton CO2 uitsparen: nieuwe plasmareactor de oplossing?

Onderzoekers aan de KU Leuven ontwikkelen een nieuwe plasmareactor voor het omzetten van aardgas: “Deze technologie kan mogelijks een oplossing bieden voor een van de grootste milieu-uitdagingen in de huidige petrochemische industrie.”

 

Tijdens de ontginning van aardolie komen er behoorlijke hoeveelheden aardgas vrij. Wegens technische en economische beperkingen wordt dit gas gefakkeld en dus gewoonweg verbrand. Op jaarbasis zorgt dit voor het verbranden van ongeveer 140 miljard kubieke meter aardgas wat overeenstemt met 30% van het wereldwijde jaarlijks verbruik. Dit is equivalent aan de uitstoot van meer dan 350 miljoen ton CO2, oftewel de jaarlijkse uitstoot van 195 miljoen personenwagens. Deze enorme hoeveelheid CO2 draagt niet enkel bij tot de verdere opwarming van de aarde, maar door het verbranden verliezen we ook aardgas dat op betere manieren benut zou kunnen worden. In feite verbranden we hiermee meer dan 26 miljard euro per jaar. Dit is spijtig omdat aardgas ook een mooie grondstof kan zijn voor de chemie.

Ieder jaar fakkelen we zo’n 140 miljard kubieke meter aardgas wat overeenstemt met 30% van het wereldwijde jaarlijks verbruik.

Valorisatie van aardgas

Aan de KU Leuven wordt daarom nagedacht over manieren om dit gas verder te kunnen valoriseren. Een doorbraak kwam er in 2015 met de ontwikkeling van een veelbelovend nieuwe technologie, een plasmareactor. In zo een reactor wordt een groot potentiaalverschil opgewekt tussen twee platen. Het gas dat zich bevindt in deze zone wordt omgezet in een plasma. Dit wordt naast vast, vloeibaar en gas vaak de vierde aggregatietoestand genoemd. In het complexe mengsel reageert aardgas tot ethyleen, een van de belangrijkste bouwblokken uit de chemische industrie.

Ethyleen vindt onder meer toepassingen in plastic flessen en folies, als behuizing rond kabels en schuimen voor isolatiematerialen. Het potentieel is groot omdat methaan een goedkope grondstof is en ethyleen aan de andere kant relatief waardevol. Vanuit een technisch standpunt bewijst de technologie zich al snel en in de jaren die volgen wordt het proces verder ontwikkeld en geoptimaliseerd. Met een levenscyclusanalyse (LCA) willen de onderzoekers finaal aantonen waar hun nieuwe proces staat in vergelijking met de conventionele manieren om ethyleen te produceren.

Levenscyclusanalyse

In een levenscyclusanalyse wordt nagegaan wat de milieu-impact is van een proces of product vanaf de ontginning van de grondstoffen tot en met het afgewerkt product. Dat kan bijvoorbeeld gaan over CO2-uitstoot, wat de focus is van deze thesis, maar eveneens het waterverbruik, landverbruik of verzuring van het milieu.

Allereerst heb ik bepaald wat de totale CO2-uitstoot van het nieuwe plasmaproces zou zijn. Al snel was de conclusie dat de uitstoot vele malen hoger lag dan de conventionele manieren om ethyleen te produceren. De grote boosdoener bleek het elektriciteitsverbruik te zijn. Om zo een plasma op te wekken is er namelijk heel wat elektrische energie nodig. Gezien elektriciteit van het net op dit moment nog voor een groot deel afkomstig is van het verbranden van fossiele brandstoffen brengt dit een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid CO2 met zich mee. Daarom werd in een volgende stap gekeken naar hernieuwbare energiebronnen zoals elektriciteit opgewekt door windturbines of zonnepanelen. Wanneer we deze inzetten verkregen we in het beste geval een uitstoot die 88% lager ligt dan in het geval waar elektriciteit van het net werd gebruikt. Dit is aanzienlijk beter dan de huidige processen voor het produceren van ethyleen: 0,8 kilogram CO2 per kilogram ethyleen voor het nieuwe plasmaproces tegenover 1,1 wanneer vertrokken wordt vanuit aardolie en 1,6 indien schaliegas wordt gebruikt. Dat schaliegas behoorlijk meer uitstoot, heeft voornamelijk te maken met de extractieprocessen die een stuk vervuilender zijn.

Dit is een zeer grote stap aangezien de conventionele methodes decennialang werden geoptimaliseerd en het vanuit een economisch maar eveneens ook een milieustandpunt niet gemakkelijk is voor nieuwe technologieën om hier tegenop te boksen.

Het nieuwe proces om ethyleen te produceren is vooral veelbelovend wanneer het gekoppeld wordt aan groene energie en wordt gezien als een aansporing voor het valoriseren van afvalgasstromen. Door deze niet te verbranden kunnen we aanzienlijk bijdragen aan het verminderen van de globale CO2-uitstoot.

Ook biomassa is een optie

Veel interesse bestaat er vandaag de dag om vanuit biomassa onze chemicaliën te produceren. Voor de omzetting van biomassa naar ethyleen is de kennis over de processen reeds aanwezig. Dit bestaat grofweg uit 2 grote stappen. Eerst wordt de biomassa gefermenteerd en wordt een soort van bier verkregen. Daarna wordt uit het alcohol water onttrokken en wat men verkrijgt is biogebaseerd ethyleen.

Ook deze piste heb ik onderzocht in de LCA-studie en de resultaten zijn zeer positief. Van alle onderzochte methodes voor het produceren van ethyleen is vertrekken vanuit biomassa de enige route die resulteert in een negatieve CO2-uitstoot. Dit betekent dat over het volledige verloop van biomassa kweken tot het omzetten in ethyleen er feitelijk CO2 wordt opgeslagen. Dat komt omdat planten CO2 capteren uit de lucht en gebruiken om hun weefsels te vormen.

In het geval van maïs wordt met elke kilogram bio-ethyleen ongeveer één kilogram CO2 opgeslagen. Productie uit biomassa is inderdaad heel mooie technologie, maar deze processen kunnen niet overleven zonder subsidies. Op dit moment ligt de break-even prijs van het bekomen bio-ethyleen tot tweemaal hoger dan de huidige marktprijs. Hetzelfde geldt voor het nieuw ontwikkelde plasmaproces waarbij de break-even prijs tot driemaal hoger dan de marktprijs zou moeten liggen. Door de huidige elektriciteitsprijs moet vanuit economisch standpunt het plasmaproces zelf nog efficiënter worden om op te tornen tegen de conventionele routes uit aardolie en schaliegas. Maar met de toenemende vergroening van onze energiemix kan wel een duurzaam geëlektrificeerd proces bekomen worden voor de productie van ethyleen. 

Van alle pistes onderzocht in deze studie is biogebaseerd ethyleen de enige weg waarin netto CO2 wordt opgeslagen.
