VERBORGEN TALENTEN. De invloed van ouders op faalangst, gecontroleerde motivatie en onderpresteren bij (hoog)begaafde leerlingen in Vlaanderen.

Getalenteerd en slim, maar toch verborgen?

“Mijn kind is zo slim en toch behaalt hij niet de punten dat ik zou willen.” Waarom begaafde leerlingen niet presteren naar hun capaciteiten, is het uitgangspunt van mijn masterthesis als student schoolpsychologie aan KU Leuven.

In tijden van het M-decreet, waar er gestreefd wordt naar inclusief onderwijs voor alle leerlingen, mag de cognitief begaafde groep niet vergeten worden. Ook leerlingen die tot de top 10% behoren van hun leeftijdsgenoten hebben specifieke onderwijsbehoeften. Hoewel zij het over het algemeen wel goed doen op school, zijn er ook getalenteerde leerlingen die verborgen blijven. Iemand kan vergelijkbare resultaten behalen als een klasgenoot en toch onderpresteren. Hij/zij levert niet de prestaties die verwacht kunnen worden op basis van de intelligentie. Onderzoek naar de waarom van onderpresteren, kan handvaten bieden in de dagelijkse begeleiding van (begaafde) leerlingen.

Meer dan 3000 leerlingen uit de eerste graad van 27 secundaire scholen nemen deel aan het project TALENT*, een grootschalige studie in Vlaanderen. Mijn eindwerk maakt gebruik van deze data. Een theoretisch model wordt met verschillende gegevens onderzocht: een zelfrapportage van 403 begaafde leerlingen, een vragenlijst bij hun ouders en een objectieve wiskundeproef om onderpresteren vast te stellen. Via padanalyses, een statistische methode om een samenhang tussen verschillende factoren na te gaan, wordt het model getoetst.

Meer dan een cijfer

Begaafdheid is een moeilijk te vatten concept. Wanneer iemand bovengemiddeld scoort op een intelligentietest, wordt hij/zij als begaafd gezien. Hoewel IQ zeker van belang is, is deze aanleg meer dan een cijfer. Begaafdheid is dynamisch, veranderlijk en beïnvloedbaar door verschillende factoren. Begaafdheidsmodellen, zoals het Munich Model of Giftedness and Talent van Heller geven aan dat zowel omgevings- als persoonlijke factoren een invloed hebben op het tot uiting komen van capaciteiten in bovengemiddelde prestaties.

Verborgen of zichtbaar?

Uit de wiskundeproef blijkt dat 1 op 10 begaafde leerlingen beneden zijn/haar capaciteiten scoort. Dat wil zeggen dat de cijfer beneden het gemiddelde ligt dat we eigenlijk kunnen verwachten op basis van het IQ. De grens is nogal arbitrair, dus we kunnen hier niet over een risico spreken. Bovendien liggen deze cijfers lager bij de vragenlijsten. Daarin geeft slechts 4 tot 6% aan dat hij betere resultaten zou kunnen behalen dan dat hij op dit moment doet. 

Wat kan er nu voor zorgen dat een slimme leerling niet toont wat hij in zijn mars heeft? Het antwoord ligt in de begaafdheidsmodellen. Een wisselwerking tussen context, zoals opvoeding of school, en persoonlijke factoren zoals motivatie en faalangst, bepalen in welke mate iemand zijn talenten kan omzetten in prestatie. Mijn eindwerk concentreert op de opvoeding van ouders, motivatie en faalangst.

Moeten presteren

In welke mate en op welke manier een leerling zich inzet voor school is toe te schrijven aan motivatie. Bovendien is de soort motivatie van belang. Motivatietheorieën, zoals dat van Ryan & Deci, bieden hier een theoretisch kader. Een leerling kan enerzijds gemotiveerd zijn vanuit externe redenen, zoals het willen voldoen aan andermans verwachtingen, het krijgen van een beloning of het vermijden van een schuldgevoel. Anderzijds kan iemand gedreven zijn vanuit een interne drijfveer. Iemand toont inzet omwille van persoonlijk belang, plezier of interesse. Hoe meer je gemotiveerd bent vanuit jezelf, hoe productiever, voordeliger en gunstiger op lange termijn. Er kan dus verondersteld worden dat een meer externe motivatie nadelig is om te presteren. De resultaten in mijn onderzoek bevestigen dit echter niet. Onderpresteren heeft geen verband met deze vorm van motivatie, waarschijnlijk omdat er wel nog steeds sprake is van een motivatie.

Je zou je moeten schamen!

Wat zorgt er nu voor dat je een bepaalde motivatie al dan niet hebt? Je omgeving speelt hier een belangrijke rol. Hoe meer je dagelijkse school- en thuiscontext voldoet aan een aantal basisbehoeften, hoe meer je een intrinsieke motivatie ontwikkeld. Eén van deze basisbehoeften is autonomie, een gevoel van onafhankelijkheid. Als iemand veel controle ervaart, vanuit zichzelf of vanuit zijn omgeving, dan wordt dit gevoel ondermijnt. Dit kan op zijn beurt negatieve gevolgen hebben op schoolse inzet, motivatie en prestatie. 

 

Een voorbeeld van druk uit je omgeving is psychologische controle. Ouders die het gedrag van hun kinderen, al dan niet bewust, proberen te sturen via schuldgevoelens of voorwaardelijke liefde en aandacht, hanteren deze techniek in hun opvoedingsstijl. Een moeder die haar kind op schools vlak psychologisch controleert zal bijvoorbeeld bij falen reageren met “je zou je moeten schamen met zo’n slecht rapport”. Of de vader geeft zijn zoon enkel aandacht wanneer hij goed presteert op school. 

Ouders bedoelen het ongetwijfeld goed. Ze willen het beste in hun kind naar boven halen. Maar, deze opvoedingsstijl kan motivatie en inzet voor school negatief beïnvloeden. Bovendien kan er faalangst ontstaan. Want ja, de reactie van de ouders zorgt ervoor dat falen een gevaar wordt dat vermeden moet worden. Al deze factoren samen zouden er dus misschien voor kunnen zorgen dat een leerling niet presteert zoals er verwacht wordt.  De resultaten in mijn onderzoek bevestigen een relatie van ouderlijke psychologische controle met faalangst en extern gestuurde motivatie. Bovendien is er evidentie voor een direct verband met onderpresteren.

Resultaten model 1 Noot. Gestandaardiseerde coëfficiënten van de directe relaties tussen APC (gerapporteerd door de leerling), gecontroleerde motivatie, faalangst en onderpresteren (gerapporteerd door leerling) (volle pijlen) en de samenhang tussen faalangst en gecontroleerde motivatie (stippellijn). Significantieniveau: ** p ≤ 0,01, *** p ≤ 0,001.

We moeten dit echter wel met een korreltje zout nemen. Om resultaten van sterke verklarende kracht te voorzien, zijn uitgebreidere analyses noodzakelijk. Er zijn geen oorzaak-gevolg relaties vast te stellen. Het kan bijvoorbeeld evengoed zijn dat het herhaaldelijk “falen” van een leerling er net voor zorgt dat ouders meer psychologisch controleren. Bovendien zullen andere factoren zoals de schoolse context of bepaalde levensgebeurtenissen waarschijnlijk ook een rol spelen in de verklaring van onderpresteren. 

Kortom, waarom een begaafde leerling niet presteert naar zijn capaciteiten is geen evidente vraag om te beantwoorden. Deze masterthesis onthult slechts een tipje van de sluier. Benieuwd wat het TALENT-project nog meer ontdekt? Je kan alles volgen via www.projecttalent.be
