Genderongelijkheid in de Vlaamse filmindustrie: een fabel of een feit?

‘Ongelijkheid tussen man en vrouw? Dat is toch niet meer van deze tijd!’ Echter, wanneer de Europese teller voor vrouwelijke regisseurs op 20% staat, moet er een andere conclusie worden getrokken. Ongelijkheid tussen man en vrouw bestaat nog steeds en zeker binnen de filmindustrie. 

Grab them by the pussy. Een zin bestaande uit slechts vijf woorden, maar de gevolgen ervan zijn enorm. Het werd uitgesproken door voormalig entertainer Donald Trump waarmee hij duidelijk maakt dat vrouwen zich binnen de entertainmentindustrie in een ondergeschikte, ongelijke positie bevinden. Eind 2017 viel het doek over Harvey Weinstein. De Amerikaanse producent werd door een grote groep vrouwen actief in de filmsector beschuldigd van ongewenste intimiteiten. De pleister werd van de wonde getrokken en van overal kwamen verhalen, schandalen en getuigenissen van vrouwen naar boven. Dit alles krijgt bijval onder de “hashtag metoo”-beweging. Een discussie die zich niet beperkte tot grensoverschrijdend gedrag, maar ook uitbreidde naar bredere discussies over de rol en positie van vrouwen binnen de filmindustrie. Eén van de zaken die daarbij cruciaal is, is het in kaart brengen van de situatie: hoe erg is het gesteld met genderongelijkheid en in hoeverre is er een evolutie? Op Europees vlak nemen landen mondjesmaat het initiatief om deze problematiek te onderzoeken, maar voor Vlaanderen is vooralsnog geen onderzoek beschikbaar. En dat ben ik in mijn masterproef gaan onderzoeken: is er sprake van genderonglijkheid binnen de Vlaamse filmindustrie?

Vlaamse filmindustrie onderzocht

Deze vraag vormt de leidraad in de scriptie ‘Genderongelijkheid in de Vlaamse filmindustrie: een fabel of een feit?’. Binnen deze scriptie werd er onderzocht hoe het zit met de genderverdeling binnen de Vlaamse filmindustrie: hoeveel mannen vinden we terug en hoeveel vrouwen, doorheen de tijd, doorheen de verschillende schakels van het filmberoep (onderwijs, kortfilm, film) en tussen de verschillende beroepstakken van de industrie (regisseur, scenarist, componist, etc.)?

Dit onderzoek is uniek in zijn soort omdat dit nog nooit eerder werd onderzocht voor Vlaanderen. Een voor de hand liggende methode om dit te onderzoeken, was dan ook niet beschikbaar. Een samenwerking werd gezocht en gevonden bij het Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds, dat jaarlijks financiële ondersteuning biedt aan filmprojecten in Vlaanderen. Het onderzoek werd uiteindelijk uitgevoerd aan de hand van een tijdslijn die de verschillende stappen identificeert die men logischerwijs volgt tijdens een carrière naar en in de filmsector. Deze tijdslijn onderzoekt de genderverdeling van de eerste stap, een opleiding binnen een filmschool, tot de laatste stap de effectieve tewerkstelling in de sector. En dit aan de hand van cijfermateriaal overheen de periode 2006-2018. Daarnaast werd een analyse gemaakt van de verschillende beroepstakken binnen de filmindustrie en werd er gekeken of er een verschil was tussen films gesteund door een publiek steunfonds en niet. 

Negatief rapport voor de Vlaamse filmindustrie 

De uiteindelijke resultaten van het onderzoek waren allesbehalve positief. De Vlaamse filmindustrie kent een sterke, mannelijke dominantie over de hele onderzochte tijdslijn heen. Van de bezetting op de schoolbanken tot de bezetting van de filmploegen, overal is er een mannelijke meerderheid vast te stellen. Onderstaande tijdslijn illustreert de gemiddeldes per onderzochte stap overheen de periode 2006-2018. Zoals afgeleid kan worden, neemt de kloof tussen aantal mannen en vrouwen toe naargelang de carrière vordert. Vanaf het verlaten van de schoolbanken zakt het aandeel vrouwen verder en verder weg. Dit resulteert in een lage representatie van vrouwen binnen de kernberoepen van de Vlaamse filmindustrie. Met een gemiddelde tewerkstelling van 22% vrouwen en 78% mannen binnen kernberoepen kan men spreken van een grote genderkloof.

Bezetting van kernberoepen is stereotyperend 

Voor het onderzoeken van genderongelijkheid binnen de kernberoepen van de Vlaamse filmindustrie, werden acht kernberoepen geïdentificeerd en onderzocht. Kernberoepen regisseur, scenarist, producent, monteur, fotografie en filmcomponist kennen een constante mannelijke dominantie. Kernberoepen kostuumdesign en casting kennen dan weer een vrouwelijke dominantie. Met andere woorden: de leidinggevende, technischere jobs worden uitgevoerd door mannen. De zorgende en sociale jobs worden uitgevoerd door vrouwen. 

Naast de stereotyperende bezetting van de kernberoepen binnen de Vlaamse filmindustrie, ligt de vrouwelijke bezetting van kernberoepen lager dan Europese gemiddeldes. De Europese teller voor vrouwelijke regisseurs staat op 20%, voor Vlaanderen staat deze echter op 16%. 

Hoop op verbetering lijkt ver weg

Het onderzoek werd gevoerd aan de hand van cijfermateriaal over een periode van twaalf jaar. Overheen deze periode kan een minieme, positieve stijging op te merken zijn langs de vrouwelijke zijde. Er is een verdubbeling van vrouwelijke masterstudenten aan filmscholen: van 24% naar 48%. Deze verdubbeling trekt zich niet door binnen de andere stappen van de onderzochte carrière. In 2006 waren er 17% vrouwen tewerkgesteld in kernberoepen van de Vlaamse filmindustrie en in 2018 waren dat er 19%. Een stijging van slechts 2% over twaalf jaar heen. Een snelle verandering aan de huidige situatie lijkt nog niet voor morgen. 

Dit betekent echter niet dat genderongelijkheid noodzakelijk een intentioneel proces is, of dat bestaande subsidiemechanismen tot uitsluiting van vrouwen leiden. Wel biedt het onderzoek een belangrijke eerste stap in het uitwerken van maatregelen om gelijkheid en diversiteit (overigens niet enkel man-vrouw) binnen de filmsector te vergroten.
