Indoor Navigation by Centralized Tracking

De thesis toont het concept van omgekeerde beacons voor navigatie binnenin een complex gebouw. Zowel het achterliggende protocol, configuratie en manier van navigatie worden in de thesis besproken.

Gedaan met nummers te volgen om tot je afspraak in een ziekenhuis te komen

Navigatiemethoden binnen een gebouw die gebruik maken van Bluetooth `Beacons` of die scannen naar Wi-Fi access points bestaan al een geruime tijd. Deze technologieën berusten echter vaak op de smartphone applicatie om al het rekenwerk te verrichten, wat redelijk wat geld kost om te ontwikkelen. Dit is een van de voornaamste redenen waarom een complex gebouw zoals een ziekenhuis vaak nog geen betere navigatiemethode dan ‘routes’ heeft. Er bestaat echter een makkelijke oplossing, het omdraaien van de rol van ‘Beacons’ door het plaatsen van Bluetooth scanners. Deze methode heeft enkele technische nadelen tegenover andere methoden, maar anders dan Wi-Fi of Beacons heeft het ook enkele specifieke voordelen waardoor het een betere optie is voor binnenin een ziekenhuis.

Elk project start met het opstellen van de vereisten. Voor navigatie binnenin een ziekenhuis was dit om ervoor te zorgen dat de technologie de navigatie naar de afspraak verbeterd, zonder dit een negatieve impact heeft op andere patiënten of bezoekers.

Bestaande positioneringstechnieken zoals Bluetooth Beacons zenden een continue signaal uit. Dit signaal kan door een GSM worden ontvangen om zo een locatie te bepalen. In een groot gebouw zoals een ziekenhuis is het niet wenselijk om 1000’de toestellen te hebben die meerdere malen per seconden een signaal uitsturen. Daarom werd de keuze gemaakt om het concept om te draaien en de GSM te laten figureren als de ‘Beacon’ die door scanners word gelokaliseerd. Op deze manier worden de signalen beperkt tot het aantal gebruikers dat op dat moment een route volgen.

Het ontworpen systeem kan niet dezelfde accuraatheid bekomen als de positioneringsmethode met Bluetooth Beacons. Accuraatheid van een positie in een ziekenhuisgebouw is echter niet zo belangrijk als het lijkt. Als patiënt of bezoeker wil je vooral weten welk gangpad je moet nemen of waar je een lift moet nemen. Zolang de gebruiker deze instructies op tijd krijgt slaagt deze er in om tot zijn bestemmen te geraken.

Bovenstaande figuurt toont hoe instructies gegeven worden aan de persoon die dient te worden genavigeerd. De applicatie is een proof of concept van de positioneeringsmethode.
