Wat met 'frequent flyers'?

Wie ben ik?

Hallo, ik ben Carolien Van der Borght. Sinds dit jaar mag ik mij een volwaardige alumni noemen aan de KULeuven, dit aan de faculteit Geneeskunde en Gezondheidswetenschappen, na het afronden van de Master-na-Master Management en Beleid in de Gezondheidszorg. Afgelopen jaar heb ik nauw samengewerkt met een medestudent om samen met haar een masterscriptie te schrijven rond een welgekozen thema namelijk ‘frequent flyers’. Onder ‘frequent flyers’ categoriseren we patiënten die afgelopen jaar vier keer of meer werden opgenomen in het ziekenhuis.

Waar gaat het over?

In deze masterscriptie zijn wij via interviews met de patiënt op zoek gegaan naar de oorzaken en ervaringen die de patiënt en zijn familie ondervonden in kader van de frequente ziekenhuisopnames. Deze studie vond plaats in UZ Leuven Gasthuisberg en gaf ons heel wat belangrijke inzichten in een vrij nieuw onderzoeksgebied. Tot op heden zijn er weinig studies terug te vinden die dieper ingaan op dit thema.

Ziekenhuisopnames vormen een zeer belangrijk aandachtspunt in onze huidige samenleving. In België blijft de vraag naar gezondheidszorg stijgen terwijl het beschikbaar aantal middelen stagneert. Belangstelling voor en onderzoek naar dit thema is om deze reden van uiterst belang om zo tot kostenbeheersing en efficiëntie te komen en de gezondheidszorg op deze manier voor iedereen toegankelijk en betaalbaar te houden.

Wat wil ik meegeven?

Deze masterscriptie heeft me heel wat bijgebracht inzake het perspectief van de patiënt en zijn omgeving, maar ook omtrent de knelpunten in de gezondheidszorg die aangepakt kunnen worden. Naar de toekomst toe zou meer onderzoek moeten gebeuren naar deze specifieke patiëntengroep om zo de oorzaken van deze frequente ziekenhuisopnames beter in kaart te brengen. Daarom wil ik graag andere onderzoekers verder aansporen om dieper in te gaan op het fenomeen van de ‘frequent flyer’, om zo verbeterpunten te detecteren die geïmplementeerd kunnen worden en hopelijk leiden tot minder frequente ziekenhuisopnames.
