Welzijn tijdens de COVID-lockdown en mogelijke reddingsboeien. Een onderzoek naar de rol van emotieregulatie en de mediërende rol van zelfmotivatie op verveling, levenstevredenheid en lockdown-volharding.

Een stressvolle periode zoals een lockdown? Er bestaan reddingsboeien om hiermee om te gaan!

Hebt u ook psychische moeilijkheden ervaren tijdens de COVID-lockdown? U bent niet de enige. Uit onderzoek blijkt een toename in verveling en een daling in levenstevredenheid bij een groot deel van de bevolking. Toch is er hierin heel wat variatie tussen mensen, waarbij de vraag gesteld kan worden hoe dit komt.

“Ik ben erg verveeld. Ik kan niets doen. Ik zit vast in een gesloten ruimte en doe dezelfde dingen opnieuw en opnieuw. Ik ben ongelukkig.” Dit zijn de woorden van een Chinese vrouw die geïnterviewd werd tijdens de eerste COVID-19 lockdown (FRANCE 24 English, 2020).

Een groot deel van de bevolking in België heeft tijdens de coronacrisis twee keer een hele periode in isolatie moeten doorbrengen: de COVID-lockdowns. Dit zorgde bij heel wat mensen voor een toename in verveling, een daling in levenstevredenheid en een daling in lockdown-volharding (deze term werd in de scriptie gebruikt om te wijzen op het gevoel de lockdown nog te kunnen volhouden). Aangezien er mensen zijn die hier meer last van hadden dan anderen, en er zelfs mensen zijn die de lockdown net een voordeel vonden, reist de vraag op hoe dit nu komt. Welke factoren zorgen ervoor dat sommigen hier meer of minder moeite mee hadden?

Dit is belangrijk om te weten, aangezien we, indien we achter deze mechanismen kunnen komen, deze als reddingsboeien kunnen inzetten in behandeling bij stressvolle periodes (zoals lockdowns). In deze scriptie werden zowel emotieregulatie als zelfmotivatie onderzocht als mogelijke reddingsboeien tijdens de lockdown.

Omgaan met je emoties: emotieregulatie

In de scriptie worden er twee types van emotieregulatie besproken, namelijk emotionele integratie en emotionele suppressie. Emotionele integratie is een goede manier om om te gaan met je emoties, waarbij je eigenlijk je emoties als signaalgevers ziet om er vervolgens op een goede manier naar te handelen. Bijvoorbeeld als je je overweldigd voelt na een drukke dag en op basis daarvan beslist om ’s avonds iets rustig te doen. Emotionele suppressie anderzijds is een eerder nefaste manier van omgaan met je emoties en komt eigenlijk neer op het onderdrukken van emoties. Uiteraard hangt het ook af van de context welke emotieregulatie strategie je best gebruikt, aangezien het in sommige contexten beter kan zijn om net wel even de emoties te onderdrukken. Een vraag die gesteld kan worden is op welke manier de emotieregulatie strategieën instaan in het omgaan met verveling, levenstevredenheid en lockdown-volharding tijdens de lockdown. Hier zou zelfmotivatie (het zichzelf motiveren) een antwoord op kunnen bieden.

Jezelf motiveren: zelfmotivatie

Van zelfmotivatie worden in de scriptie tevens twee types onderscheiden, namelijk autonomie-gerichte zelfmotivatie en controle-gerichte zelfmotivatie. Autonomie-gerichte zelfmotivatie is meer vrijwillig van aard en kan gebruikt worden om bv. een activiteit of een maatregel leuk te maken, waarbij er een link gemaakt kan worden met emotionele integratie (aangezien dit ook vrijwillig van aard is). Wanneer mensen anderzijds controle-gerichte zelfmotivatie gebruiken, dan forceren ze zichzelf om iets te doen, waarbij er een link gemaakt kan worden met emotionele suppressie (aangezien dit ook eerder niet vrijwillig van aard is).

In de huidige scriptie wordt onderzocht in welke mate het verband tussen emotieregulatie enerzijds en verveling, levenstevredenheid en lockdown-volharding anderzijds deels gemedieerd (verklaard) wordt door zelfmotivatie. Deze mogelijke (gedeeltelijke) mediërende rol is nog nooit onderzocht geweest, wat dit onderzoek relevant maakt.

Er worden twee onderzoeksvragen besproken. In de eerste onderzoeksvraag wordt de vraag gesteld hoe de emotieregulatie strategieën, gemeten in maart 2020 (tijdens de eerste lockdown in België), gerelateerd zijn aan enkele indicatoren van aanpassing, namelijk verveling, levenstevredenheid en lockdown-volharding, gemeten eind november 2020 (acht maanden later, tijdens de tweede COVID-lockdown). In de tweede onderzoeksvraag wordt gepeild naar een verklarende factor voor de verbanden van onderzoeksvraag 1. Specifiek wordt de vraag gesteld in welke mate de verbanden tussen emotieregulatie en de aanpassingsindicatoren (verveling, levenstevredenheid en lockdown-volharding) gemedieerd worden door het gebruik van verschillende zelfmotivatie strategieën eind november 2020 (tijdens de tweede lockdown).

Methode

Van 2423 participanten werd data geanalyseerd tijdens de eerste en tweede COVID-lockdown in België. Hiervoor werd gebruik gemaakt van R studio, versie 3.6.3 en IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science), versie 22. Voor de eerste onderzoeksvraag werd een correlatietabel berekend en voor de tweede werd gebruik gemaakt van Structurele Vergelijkingsmodellering.

Resultaten

Als er ten eerste gekeken wordt naar de verbanden tussen emotieregulatie en verveling, levenstevredenheid en lockdown-volharding, bleek emotionele integratie tegen de verwachtingen in geen significante effecten te hebben op verveling, levenstevredenheid en lockdown-volharding. Daarnaast bleek dat hoe meer iemand zijn gevoelens onderdrukt, hoe meer deze persoon gevoelens van verveling ervaart, hoe minder levenstevredenheid deze ervaart en hoe minder deze het gevoel heeft de lockdown nog te kunnen volhouden. Als er vervolgens gekeken wordt naar zelfmotivatie als gedeeltelijke verklarende factor, bleek er hiervoor amper evidentie gevonden te worden. Echter tonen de bevindingen wel de indirecte positieve invloed aan van emotionele integratie via autonomie-gerichte zelfmotivatie. De resultaten tonen namelijk aan dat hoe meer iemand aan emotionele integratie doet, hoe meer autonomie-gerichte zelfmotivatie er gehanteerd wordt, wat geassocieerd is met minder verveling, meer levenstevredenheid en meer lockdown-volharding.

Richtlijnen voor therapie

Deze resultaten zijn relevant aangezien deze richtlijnen geven voor therapie tijdens stressvolle periodes zoals lockdowns. Op basis van de gevonden evidentie zou het nuttig zijn om in te zetten op het aanleren van autonomie-gerichte zelfmotivatie (gezien de associatie met minder verveling en meer levenstevredenheid en lockdown-volharding) en het afleren van emotionele suppressie (gezien de associatie met meer verveling en minder levenstevredenheid en lockdown-volharding).
