Bosfragmenten zullen weldra talrijk worden in het Afrikaanse landschap en vele organismen zullen voor hun overleving gaan afhangen van deze bosrestanten. Door een vergelijking te maken tussen de zoogdierdiversiteit van bosfragmenten en grote intacte bossen werd er geprobeerd om inzicht te krijgen in dit proces. Zowel taxonomische als functionele diversiteit werden hierbij onder de loep genomen.

De soldatenara wordt historisch gezien onderverdeeld in drie verschillende ondersoorten op basis van verspreiding. Ondanks dat de soort bedreigd is, is deze onderverdeling nooit bevestigd. In deze scriptie werd de taxonomie van de soldatenara opgehelderd door genetisch materiaal afkomstig van museumstalen te onderzoeken.

Naast de Gentse universiteitsbibliotheek werkte architect Henry van de Velde in de jaren 30 aan nog een ander belangrijk Oost-Vlaams ensemble: de Polikliniek voor Inwendige Ziekten en Villa Landing voor Dr. Adriaan Martens te Astene (Deinze). Na een ingewikkelde beschermingscampagne werd de polikliniek in 1994 als monument beschermd, maar de plaatselijke politiek kon een bescherming van Villa Landing tegenhouden. In deze thesis wordt de connectie tussen dokter Martens en Henry van de Velde besproken, gevolgd door een analyse van de polikliniek en Villa Landing in hun ‘as built’ situatie, net zoals een analyse van hun evolutie. Verder werd onder meer een analyse van de erfgoedwaarden uitgewerkt, van waaruit een masterplan voor de restauratie van Villa Landing gedefinieerd kon worden.

The Cofán people of Zábalo, a community in the Ecuadorian Amazon, have always engaged pragmatically on an everyday basis with their forest-based lifestyle and relations with the government, corporations and outsiders (fuesu a’i). However, in recent years the community has been dealing with growing uncertainty, internal economic inequality, high unemployment, and an Ecuadorian state that extends governmental control, while also neglecting the needs of people in this region. A myriad of factors discussed in this paper, including the increased integration of outside commodities into the Cofáns’ daily life, have led me to believe that unless the Cofán gain access to a steady source of financial income to purchase basic supplies and commodities (such as bullets, gasoline and salt), many people will have to look for work outside the community or allow oil companies to exploit their resources. The growing accumulation of wealth by just two families in the community, increasing dependence on money, lack of access to jobs, and internal political divisions have increased distrust and bad talk (ega afa’cho). Through a two-month stay with the community, where I interviewed 25 individuals (collecting 67 hours of semi-structured interviews) and produced 7 short films , I mainly sought to answer the following three questions: What political and economic changes have these people encountered in recent years? What is the community’s relationship with money, commodities and other sources of value? Can the Cofán maintain an ideal tranquil (opatssi) life and take care of the forest (tsampima coiraye), while simultaneously engaging with external influences, including restrictive laws, expansion of the capitalist frontier, commodities, the Socio Bosque environmental conservation government scheme, populist local politicians, and the potential of oil exploitation?

I conclude that Zábalo is currently a frontier of ‘negligent hegemonic control’ and is becoming more assimilated into the global economic market, creating a greater dependence on money and commodities, which is both changing people’s relationship to the concepts of opatssi and tsampima coiraye and also making them more likely find a pragmatic solution to their economic problems, such as allowing oil exploitation. Finally, this paper advocates for an engaged, activist anthropology in the context of a neoliberal world with increasing inequality, marginalized indigenous peoples, and increasing environmental degradation.

Preserving nature in an urbanized modern environment proves to be rather difficult. A lot of effort is put into conserving the natural habitat. However in western Europe this natural habitat is reduced to small patches if not completely gone. Centuries of urbanization have reformed the landscape from a wild, natural environment to a more controlled, humanized creation. This shaping of the scenery has lead to a massive increase of human-induced pressure on natural populations of organisms.

Vooral dan op Luzon, het grootste landoppervlak van de Filipijnse eilandengroep die zich bovenop de beruchte vulkanengordel, de zogenaamde Ring of Fire, bevindt. In deze paradijselijke setting woedt een onzichtbare oorlog om het behoud van de fabelachtige bioculturele diversiteit van het Zuidoost-Aziatische land.

De naoorlogse jaren worden in de literatuur beschreven als een gouden periode voor de Parijse haute couture. Na het beëindigen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog grijpen verschillende couturiers de kans om een eigen modehuis op te richten. De drie bekendste zijn Christian Dior (1905-1957), Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895-1972) en Pierre Balmain (1914-1982). Hun collecties en vernieuwende silhouetten zijn bepalend voor de mode in de jaren ‘50. Mijn masterproef bekijkt het Parijse modehuis van Pierre Balmain (1914-1982) vanaf de oprichting in 1945 tot 2013.

 
This thesis aims to contribute to a broader research on the tension between heritage and retail in historic city centres in Europe. 2 research questions are worked out: Which type of buildings can be suitable for retail reuse? And how can retail design respect the historic value of the monument? Although retail design is an interdisciplinary activity which still needs extensive research in the field of urban planning, retail design, legislation, economics, public funding systems, etc. the focus of this thesis is on conservation.

Een kritisch onderzoek naar restauratierichtlijnen voor historisch meubilair in representatieve ruimtes van paleizen
 
 
Inleiding
 
In dit onderzoek wordt gekeken hoe men omgaat met in-situ niet-nagelvast meubilair in ruimtes en gebouwen met een staatsie functie. Het gaat om meubilair dat los staat in de ruimte, dus niet nagelvast, dat in zijn oorspronkelijke ruimte, in-situ, wordt bewaard.
 
Bij het behandelen van dit soort meubilair moet men verder kijken dan de eisen voor bewaring en behandeling van het object alleen.

 
This thesis describes how the social-ecological system around the Mara wetlands has changed during the previous five decades. These wetlands are mainly fed by the Mara River, which has its sources in the Kenyan Mau Escarpment. After flowing through two worldfamous wildlife parks (Serengeti and Maasai Mara), it continues in the downstream Tanzanian Mara wetlands and finally flows out in Lake Victoria.
The major focus of this thesis is on how the riparian Wakenye people in Northwest Tanzania have adapted their livelihoods to the changing context.
