Deze masterproef onderzocht de manier waarop professionals (OKAN-leerkrachten en asielcentrum medewerkers) niet-begeleide minderjarige Afghaanse jongeren percipiëren en hoe deze percepties hun professioneel handelen richting geven. Aan de hand van een reeks diepte-interviews werd deze vraag op een diepgaande manier geanalyseerd.

In a highly unequal society, many young Brazilians suffer oppression based on their class, race, gender, sexual orientation and religion. In the transition to adulthood, a period that is already marked by important changes, this brings along specific needs that need to be met. This research answers how ICBIE, a cultural centre in Salvador da Bahia, tries to meet those needs by providing a
space for young people to participate in activities and volunteer. Young adults from the region and volunteers of ICBIE have participated in a survey and in-depth interviews to find the answer to the central question of this thesis:
“How does volunteering at ICBIE contribute to the personal and professional development of young adults living on the Itapagipe Peninsula of Salvador, Bahia?”. Their answers, insights and stories were complemented by observations and were compared with, and analyzed through the lens of
national data and concepts from Robert Havighurst, Social Justice Theory and Anti-Oppressive Practises. The results show that young adults face a multitude of obstacles, mostly related to oppressive practises. Classism is the form of
oppression that stood out, connecting almost all of the respondents. And while ICBIE can’t directly change the root of these oppressive practises, it mitigates the harmful effects caused by them, by creating a place where volunteers can
learn, take up responsibility, open their view on the world, create meaningful bonds, feel safe and loved, and cultivate hope and resilience for the future.

Onze samenleving staat voor enorme uitdagingen. Mijn overtuiging is dat we binnen ons huidig denkkader geen oplossingen voor deze problemen kunnen vinden. De onderzoeksvraag van deze thesis is dan ook of het nog mogelijk is om een nieuwe samenleving in te beelden en welke rol het concept depolitisering hierin speelt.

This study is an initial attempt to investigate how alternative housing can contribute to a better integration of Unaccompanied Young Adult Refugees (UYAR) in Ghent. It recognizes the vulnerability of the target group and tries to meet their social, cultural and practical needs. Respondents, both stakeholders and UYAR, took part in qualitative research by participation in in-depth interviews and focus discussion. The results show that UYAR suffer from socio-cultural isolation and experience difficulty establishing an inter-ethnic network. Furthermore, they experience obstacles in their search for a house. Discrimination, high rental prices and difficulties with domicile are some of the most common problems. This study claims that alternative housing such as cohousing between UYAR and native-born Belgian student s would both solve the housing problems and the social segregation of UYAR. It will stimulate positive integration by ‘social learning’ and benefits the native students as well in finding proper housing and experience a multicultural way of living. The results suggest that a similar model would be beneficial for all stakeholders, but hard to reach because of legal and budgetary restrictions. Therefore, profound research should be set up to investigate the possibilities to adapt the legal frame. Also, a detailed financial plan is required to discover the feasibility and to adapt the plan if necessary. These recommendations are reserved for experts.

Christians in JordanCan the Christian communities in Jordan escape the violent fate of their neighbors?Christians in the Middle East might be facing the greatest threats they have known in centuries.  The number of Christians in the area is decreasing, and Christians are now facing violence and even extinction in areas where they have lived for centuries. Jordan seems to be a rare exception to this violence against Christians, and is even seen as an island of peace and as an example of religious coexistence.

In de huidige samenleving wordt aan het uiterlijk namelijk veel belang gehecht. Het is bijgevolg niet ondenkbaar dat uiterlijk een invloed kan hebben op de aanwervingskansen.

    ‘Vrouwelijke arbeidsmarkt participatie: Wankel of in kannen en kruiken?’Ongeveer twee jaar geleden begon ik mijn zoektocht naar een thesis onderwerp. Onder invloed van mijn medestudenten, ouders en vrienden ontwikkelde ik belangstelling voor emancipatie en vrouwelijke tewerkstelling. Feministen beweren dat de condities waarin vrouwen werken nog steeds veel te wensen overlaten, ondanks het feit dat vrouwelijke tewerkstelling nu al decennia lang erkend wordt in Europa.

                        ‘Women’s employment: Shaky or a done deal’About two years ago, my quest for a Master’s thesis topic began. Encouraged by my peers, parents and friends, I became interested in female labour market participation. Although European women’s involvement in paid labour has now been recognized for several decades, feminists argue that the conditions in which women are being employed still leave much to be desired.

To start off this defence, I will sketch the problems concerning the theology of the cross that my research has inquired into. Next, I will briefly outline the scope of my research, sketching the answers proposed by the feminist theologians in my reading and finally I will voice the results I arrived at.

Onderzoek rond stigmatisering en discriminatie van AIDS-(wees)kinderen in Guinee
 
Met de explosieve toename in Guinee van het aantal met AIDS besmette volwassenen, stijgt ook het aantal kinderen dat wees wordt door AIDS of dat erdoor getroffen wordt aangezien één of beide ouders besmet zijn. Deze kinderen zijn vaak kwetsbaarder dan andere kinderen, want ze worden aan meer gevaren blootgesteld: ze worden uitgebuit, ze kunnen vaak niet (meer) naar school wegens geen geld of daar worden ze geweerd.
