Wat is precariteit en wat voor effect heeft het op de muziekindustrie? Aan de hand van een kwalitatieve analyse van zeven ondervraagde muzikanten wordt er gezocht naar problemen en mogelijke oplossingen met betrekking tot precariteit. Deze masterproef bevat een analyse van de bemiddelingsrol die de Europese Unie heeft gespeeld tijdens de onderhandelingen van de nucleaire deal met Iran. In het eerste luik wordt het onderhandelingsproces tussen 2010 en 2015 beschreven. Het tweede luik onderzoekt de beïnvloedende factoren die de EU hinderden of hielpen tijdens dit proces.

Yet, despite the centrality of the issue, there is little research asking whether there is indeed a distinctive nature to performing live. This master thesis employs techniques of ethnographic research, analysis and qualitative interviewing to explore empirically originating understandings of how ‘liveness’ influences music performance from artist’s perspective. The topic is highly relevant and challenging as it explores the importance of performing live as opposed to mediatised performance (radio, TV broadcasts, CD recordings). ‘Liveness’ is a concept that applies to the theatre and music but not to the other forms of arts, such as visual arts, literature since the core of ‘liveness’ lies within the simultaneous presence of the artist and the audience. In terms of scope of literature in this area, this specific topic is still rather under-researched with growing interest in its relevance. Whereas there are many researchers and articles exploring ‘liveness’ in theatre or from audience perception, this thesis fills the niche of the impact of performing live upon the artist in the field of music.

Deze masterproef bestaat uit een hoofdonderzoek en een nevenonderzoek. In het hoofdonderzoek wordt de in het Nederlands vertaalde kinder- en jeugdfictie tussen 2010 en 2015 in kaart gebracht. In het nevenonderzoek wordt aan de hand van enquêtes bij uitgevers gepolst naar hoe zij buitenlandse boeken voor vertaling selecteren.

Sinds de recente financiële crisis van 2008 heerst er een vernieuwde interesse in consumentenvertrouwen op toekomstige consumptie. Als gevolg van tegenstrijdige resultaten binnen de literatuur inzake de effectiviteit van consumentenvertrouwen voor het voorspellen van toekomstige consumptie, is binnen deze masterproef getracht om belangrijke consumenten segmenten en survey vragen te identificeren om retail sales in België te voorspellen.

Aan de hand van twee literaire auteurs verkent deze scriptie de soms poreuze grens tussen fictionele en wetenschappelijke teksten over de geschiedenis van Afrika.

Biomassavliegas is een afvalproduct van biomassacentrales die momenteel gestort worden op stortplaatsen. Deze thesis zette de eerste stappen in het onderzoek naar biomassavliegas als cementvervanger in beton. De recyclage van vliegas zorgt niet alleen voor een daling van de afvalberg, maar ook voor een daling in cementproductie en bijgevolg CO2-uitstoot.

Sinds 1804 leven we in België met een regel die 'erfstellingen over de hand' verbiedt (d.i. het schenken van een goed onder de verplichting om het goed te bewaren en om het bij overlijden door te geven aan een andere persoon). Meer dan twee eeuwen later stelt zich de vraag of dit verbod nog wel actueel is. Deze scriptie onderzoekt daarom de bestaansredenen van het verbod op 'erfstellingen over de hand' en vergelijkt daarbij grondig met het Franse en Zuid-Afrikaanse recht. Als conclusie stelt de scriptie dat een verbod op 'erfstellingen over de hand' vandaag niet meer pertinent is in het licht van het toenemend belang van vermogensplanning.

Energy leakage is nowadays becoming a fundamental problem in the chip’s energy household. Reducing the energy leakage is especially important for chips targeted for low power applications such as future 'internet of everything'- devices. In this thesis we propose a solution on transistor level for the energy leakage in chips.

Deze masterproef bestudeert de democratische legitimiteit van het onderhandelingsproces van het Trans-Atlantisch Vrijhandels- en Investeringsverdrag (TTIP).

Crisis Management and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear disaster
The influence of the Nuclear Village

The triple meltdown in the Fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant on the 11th of March 2011 has been coined the second worst nuclear disaster since Tsjernobyl. It created a shockwave through the world. Concerns about the safety of this energy source rose to new heights. Voices arose to completely step away from nuclear energy altogether. In Japan this became very apparent. The government experienced massive waves of criticism. Mainly on the way they handled the crisis. This dissertation looked deeper into the crisis management regarding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster and investigated whether this was effective or not. Secondly this research concentrated on the reasons behind the failures of the crisis management, mainly concentrating on the influence of the Nuclear Village and what effect this had on the crisis management itself.
To achieve this, this dissertation first looked deeper into the legal framework surrounding crisis management in Japan to investigate whether two important aspects of crisis management were covered namely those of preparation and prevention. Secondly it used the reports of the ‘Fukushima Nuclear Accident Independent Investigation Commission’ of the National Diet of Japan and ‘The Independent Investigation committee on the Fukushima Nuclear Accident’ to look deeper into the immediate crisis respons and looked whether the three important elements of communication, cooperation and leadership were present. Lastly, by using the theory of George Stigler on ‘Regulatory Capture’ and the more concrete studie on the ‘Nuclear Village’ of Kainuma (開沼) and Kingston, this dissertation formed its conclusion on the reason behind the problems regarding crisis management in Japan and its effectiveness.
Out of this research it became apparent that there were serious problems concerning the crisis management of the Fukushima nuclear accident. It became clear that nuclear safety was not ensured. The government did not learn the necessary lessons from the two severe incidents that occurred before the disaster in Fukushima, which should have served as a wake-up call. During the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the main players in crisis management distrusted each other, which lead to a general lack of cooperation, communication and leadership. Although this was a period of crisis, where no one acts perfectly according to plan, this research made clear that the influence of TEPCO on the different players was a major factor in the failure of the crisis management concerning the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
This crisis eventually led to a structural reform of crisis management in Japan. This can certainly be called a big step forward. However regarding the nature of the Nuclear Village, as a deeply-enrooted system, a reform alone may not be enough. On this part more research is definitely needed.
 

This master thesis examines the effect of different channels on a consumer’s willingness to accept a hypothetical promotional invitation. The channels that are investigated are mobile, social media, direct mail and personal selling. The goal of this thesis is to recommend to retailers which channels they should use and at what point in the customer relationship these should be applied.

De safety valve theory biedt een kader om te analyseren of overheden protectionistische maatregelen gebruiken als safety valve wanneer ze hun markten openstellen. Deze studie onderzoekt of China en de Europese Unie dergelijke safety valves hanteerden toen China in 2001 lid werd van de Wereldhandelsorganisatie.

This paper investigates the impact of new residential construction on the price of existing owner-occupied houses in Flanders. The housing market is an important part of the economy in Flanders, therefore pricing of buildings is a frequently and actual debated topic. In this paper, the interaction between the existing housing market and new residential construction is further examined with a special focus on the price effect.

Een inhoudsanalyse van de programmering van acht Europese openbare omroepen. Onze zender Eén blijkt veel minder nieuws uit te zenden dan Europees gemiddeld, maar meer fictie en entertainment. Om de rol van de VRT op het internet te bestendigen, zou ze van naam moeten veranderen naar VRTI.

A secure attachment relationship in childhood is closely related to the development of an individual. Attachment to the father especially predicts children’s exploratory behavior. It is of importance to gain more insight into the role of father’s attachment in the cognitive development of the offspring. Experimental studies with laboratory mice are theoretically and practically feasible alternatives to study the attachment relationship and its outcomes in a more controlled manner. In this study, we aimed to investigate the social preference and exploratory tendency of C57BL/6 laboratory mice, and the effects of cohabitant father, mother sensitivity and age on social preference and exploratory tendency.
Three main research questions were formulated: (1) Do pups show a preference to the mother or the father in case they have a cohabitant father? (2) Do pups show a preference to the mother or to the outside cohabitant father in case they are tested with an outside cohabitant father? (3) Do pups show a preference to their own father or the outside cohabitant father in case they have a non-cohabitant father? In the meantime, the research questions also incorporated the effect of father cohabitation, mother sensitivity and age of the pups on the social preference and exploratory tendency of the pups. Three testing conditions were designed: mother vs. father, mother vs. other father and father vs. other father, to cover all planned comparisons. The social preference data was collected with the assistance of ANY-maze video tracking system.
The statistical results showed that pups preferred mother to father and outside cohabitant father, and pups in general showed equal preference to the father and the comparison father. However, pups with own non-cohabitant father preferred the outside cohabitant father to their own father. Father cohabitation effect was found to be significant in affecting the social preference and the exploratory tendency of the pups in all three conditions. Age was found significant in predicting the exploratory tendency of the pups in all three conditions, and sensitivity was found significantly predicting the exploratory tendency in mother vs. father condition and social preference significant in mother vs. other father condition.
Our results suggest that father cohabitation has a positive effect on the social preference of the pups to the father and the exploratory tendency of the pups. The study can be used as a prototype to study father attachment in laboratory mice.

Schaliegas: vloek of zegen? De race om het blauwe goud.In de naweeën van de economische en financiële crisis, lijkt het belangrijker dan ooit om sterke economische groeicijfers te presenteren. Goedkope energiebronnen vormen hierbij de basisingrediënten om de groeihonger te stillen en de economische motor – al dan niet ten koste van het klimaat – aan te sturen. Schaliegas luidt de naam van de nieuwe rijzende ster aan het energiefirmament. In navolging van Amerika lijkt ook de Europese Unie jacht te maken op dit nieuwe blauw goud.

Werken tot 67 jaar: “het is van de moetens”, maar hoe?59,6 jaar. Dat is de gemiddelde leeftijd waarop Belgen hun werk inruilen voor het pensioen. Het maakt van België een land met één van de jongste uittredingsleeftijden van de Europese Unie. Samen met een werkzaamheidsgraad (dit is het aandeel werkenden in de actieve bevolking  van zo’n 42% voor de 50-plussers in ons land resulteert dit cijfer in een hoog kostenplaatje voor de sociale zekerheid. Om de financiële dam te stutten, heeft de regering beslist om de wettelijke pensioenleeftijd op te trekken tot 67.
