De verbeterkunde, een ongewenste bevrijding?
Abstract:
Steeds meer medische middelen brengen functionele verbeteringen aan in het menselijke lichaam en schieten bijgevolg de grens van de genezing voorbij – denk aan doping, neurofarmaceutica, gentechnologie en geavanceerde prothesen. Men noemt dit enhancement medicine, te vertalen als ‘verbeterkunde’. De ethische waarde van deze verbeterkunde wordt fel gecontesteerd. In het debat ontstaan twee afgetekende polen. De ‘transhumanistische’ strekking bepleit een recht op ‘morfologische vrijheid’: elk individu heeft in beginsel het recht om het eigen lichaam vrij vorm te geven. ‘Bioconservatieven’ daarentegen zien de verbeterkunde als een overtreding van een ethisch geladen natuurlijke grens, en velen onder hen zien de verbeterkunde liefst verboden. Het valt op hoe in de lopende ethische debatten intrinsieke en contextuele argumenten al te vaak door elkaar worden gehaspeld. Er is nood aan verheldering. Daarom beperk ik mij tot de ethische argumenten pro en contra de intrinsieke eigenschappen van de verbeterkunde: ik maak abstractie van de contextuele vraagstukken over veiligheid en sociale rechtvaardigheid, en spits mij toe op de wezenskenmerken van de verbeterkunde. Uit een kritische doorlichting van intrinsieke argumentaties zou moeten blijken dat de bioconservatieve veroordeling niet overtuigt. De verbeterkunde confronteert ons echter wel met twee fundamentele problemen. Zo plaatst een uitdijende morfologische vrijheid de ‘gespleten mens’ voor verscheurende keuzes omtrent zijn geprefereerde levensinvulling. De mogelijkheid om ons eigen gevoelsleven en onze persoonlijkheidskenmerken drastisch te hertekenen, verstoort daarenboven het fundament van de menselijke levenslust, te weten: de spontane aandrift. Hieruit ontstaat een existentialistische uitdaging waar het conventionele verweer tegen het existentialisme – nl. dat het uitleven van verlangens volstaat om goed te leven – geen vat op heeft.
