De identificatie van supporters met hun club. Een geografische studie naar de breuklijnen bij Antwerp FC en Germinal Beerschot

Waarom wordt het ene voetbalteam boven het andere voetbalteam gekozen? Hoe komt het bijvoorbeeld dat men supporter is van Antwerp FC en niet van Germinal Beerschot? Tussen rivaliserende voetbalclubs bestaan er steeds breuklijnen of “cleavages” die historisch gegroeid zijn en van uitermate belang zijn om de verwevenheid en identificatie van een supporter met zijn club te verklaren. Aan de hand van een geografische studie naar de RAFC en GB supporter trachtte ik de breuklijnen tussen beide clubs bloot te leggen en inzicht te verkrijgen waarom men Antwerp of GB supporter wordt.
 
Het concept breuklijnen is vooral gekend in de Politicologie. Het electoraat en de politieke partijen zijn verdeeld over enkele diepe duurzame tegenstellingen die doorheen de maatschappij lopen. Zo komen bijvoorbeeld de Belgische politieke partijen steeds weer tegenover elkaar te staan naar aanleiding van de sociaal-economische breuklijn. Bepaalde partijen ijveren meer voor een open markt anderen willen dan weer meer staatsinterventie.
De breuklijnentheorie kan echter ook toegepast worden op het voetballandschap en daar de duurzame tegenstellingen tussen specifieke clubs verhelderen. In het voetballandschap vinden we drie breuklijnen terug die aan de basis liggen van de onderlinge rivaliteit en die van belang zijn voor de identificatie van de fan met zijn club: een geografische breuklijn, een sociaal-economische breuklijn en een levensbeschouwelijke breuklijn.
 
Een eerste breuklijn is van geografische aard. Dat wil zeggen dat clubs binnen een stad of een regio een bepaald gebied vertegenwoordigen. De voetbalclub wordt dan het uithangbord van de gemeenschap waar de club gevestigd is (regio, stad, dorp, district…). Vooral in grote voetbalmetropolen zoals Antwerpen, Brussel of Luik speelt deze breuklijn een voorname rol. In dit geval kunnen we dan ook verwachten dat steun voor beide clubs gebaseerd is op geografische motieven. Voetbalclub Antwerp FC speelt zijn thuiswedstrijden in Deurne (Bosuil), ten noorden van Antwerpen. Het Olympisch Stadion, de thuishaven van GB, is gehuisvest ten zuiden van Antwerpen (Kiel). Men zou aldus kunnen verwachten dat RAFC zijn aanhang eerder ten noorden verwerft en GB ten zuiden.
 
Niet enkel de geografische breuklijn zorgt er voor dat een supporter zich identificeert met zijn club. Ook de sociaal-economische breuklijn zorgt voor deze verbondenheid. Vaak wordt een voetbalclub gelieerd met een bepaalde klasse binnen de samenleving. Nauw verweven met deze sociaal-economische breuklijn is de taalculturele breuklijn. Een bepaalde klasse in de samenleving wordt dan verbonden met een bepaalde culturele gemeenschap. Een voorbeeld van deze breuklijn vinden we terug in Brazilië in Rio De Janeiro waar de “Fla-Flu” derby plaats vindt tussen Flamengo en Fluminese. Deze wedstrijd wordt gekenmerkt door een diep verweven klassenconflict. De “favellas” van Flamengo nemen het hier op tegen het aristocratische fluminese. Tot voor kort kwam deze laatste club er openlijk voor uit om zwarte spelers en supporters een lidkaart te weigeren. Deze breuklijn speelde aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw ook een rol in de rivaliteit tussen RAFC en Beerschot. Antwerp werd eerder verbonden met het plebs, Beerschot met de aristocratie.
 
De verwevenheid en verbondenheid van een supporter met zijn club volgt soms ook uit het algemene waardenpatroon (de geloofsovertuiging, maatschappelijke opvatting) waarmee een club verbonden wordt. Zo kan het zijn dat een club verbonden wordt met een conservatieve, progressieve, katholieke of vrijzinnige ideologie. Het meest bekende voorbeeld van een levensbeschouwelijke breuklijn vinden we terug in Glasgow waar de “Old Firm” tussen Celtic Glasgow en Glasgow Rangers gekenmerkt wordt door een strijd tussen het katholicisme en protestantisme. Ook binnen het Belgische voetballandschap speelde de levensbeschouwelijke breuklijn een belangrijke rol in voor de identificatie van de supporters met hun club. Door de verzuiling binnen onze maatschappij werden voetbalclubs vaak verbonden met een politieke kleur. Zo werden bijvoorbeeld Club Brugge en Lierse verbonden met de vrijzinnige zuil, terwijl Cercle Brugge en Lyra verbonden werden met de katholiek zuil. Tussen RAFC en GB blijkt deze breuklijn echter van geen belang.
 
In deze thesis heb ik deze drie breuklijnen trachten te toetsen aan de hand van een geografische studie naar de RAFC en GB supporter. Om dit onderzoek op te zetten verzamelde ik het abonnee bestand van GB van het seizoen 2005-2006, het fanclubbestand van RAFC van het seizoen 2003-2004 en databestanden van 18 van de 24 aangesloten supporterclubs van RAFC. Deze bestanden werden gekoppeld aan een geografische kaart.
 
Volgende vragen trachtte ik te beantwoorden. Ten eerste: waar zijn de RAFC– en GB supporters gehuisvest? In welke gemeenten in Vlaanderen en wijken binnen Antwerpen wonen de meeste supporters van beide clubs? (= geografische breuklijn) Zoals reeds vermeld zouden we een noord-zuid polarisatie kunnen verwachten. Supporters van RAFC zouden eerder gehuisvest zijn ten noorden van Antwerpen, supporters van GB ten zuiden van Antwerpen.
Ten tweede: wonen de supporters in socio-economische welvarende of armere buurten? (= sociaal-economische breuklijn) Antwerp verwierf oorspronkelijk zijn aanhang eerder uit de economische lagere klassen, Beerschot kreeg dan weer steun van de meer gegoede klassen. De vraag die we kunnen stellen is of deze sociaal-economische breuklijn die dominant was begin 20ste eeuw nog altijd relevant is aan het begin van de 21ste eeuw.
Ten derde: wat is het stemgedrag is van de inwoners waar de meeste Antwerp en GB supporters wonen? (=levenbeschouwelijke breuklijn)
 
Uit deze geografische studie blijkt dat de geografische breuklijn een belangrijke rol speelt in de binding van de supporter met zijn club. De stad Antwerpen zou men als het ware in twee kunnen snijden. In het zuiden van Antwerpen, waar het Olympisch stadion gevestigd is, komen er systematisch meer GB dan RAFC supporters voor. Hoboken (V), Kiel (F), Zuidwijk (E & G) en Linkeroever (B) zijn bijna helemaal blauw gekleurd. Gaan we naar het noorden van Antwerpen dan krijgen we een omgekeerd beeld. Borgerhout (S), Deurne (R), Noordwijk (C & H), Merksem (Q) en Bezali (L) worden bijna volledig rood gekleurd. Er is een district dat de hegemonie van de rood-witten ten noorden van Antwerpen doorbreekt. In Ekeren (P & J), de vroegere thuishaven van Germinal Ekeren, wonen meer GB supporters dan RAFC supporters. Opmerkelijk is ook dat in Vlaanderen deze noord-zuid polarisatie zich verder zet. In de kempen en de gemeenten ten (noord) oosten van Antwerpen zijn meer supporters van Antwerp FC gehuisvest. In de Rupelstreek en de oostelijke gemeenten van Oost-Vlaanderen wonen meer GB supporters. Uit deze analyse blijkt het belang van de thuishaven van beide clubs om de supporters te rekruteren
 
De sociaal-economische breuklijn, die belangrijk was aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw voor het verklaren van de rivaliteit tussen RAFC en GB is vandaag de dag weggeëbd. Uit de koppeling van de geografische data van de supportersgroepen en gegevens van de Databank Voor Sociale Planning Antwerpen (DSPA) bleek dat zowel de meeste GB als RAFC supporters gehuisvest zijn in de meer gegoede wijken binnen Antwerpen. Wel vinden we iets meer GB supporters terug in wijken met het hoogste netto mediaan inkomen en iets minder GB supporters in wijken met het laagste netto-mediaan inkomen indien we vergelijken met de RAFC supporters.
 
Methodologische en inhoudelijke reden verhinderden me de levensbeschouwelijke breuklijn te onderzoeken. Verder onderzoek is hier vereist.
 
Deze geografische studie naar de RAFC en GB supporter toont aan dat de geografische breuklijn een belangrijke rol speelt in de binding van de supporters met hun club. Momenteel vindt er discussie plaats over de bouw van een gloednieuwe voetbaltempel binnen Antwerpen waar zowel GB en RAFC hun thuiswedstrijden zouden spelen. Uit deze analyse blijkt dat bij het zoeken naar een geschikte locatie men evenwel rekening dient te houden met de geografische spreiding om de bestaande binding van supportergroepen te kunnen handhaven.
