De verwerking van het communistische verleden als aspect in de Albanese identiteitsvorming - Een historisch onderzoek op basis van antropologische toetsen en vertaalde literaire bronnen

 

Onbekend… en al te vaak onbemind
Albanië. Bij de “gemiddelde Belg” – voor zover deze bestaat of zelfs wenselijk is – roept het land sprekende beelden op: van bloedige stammentwisten, blinde autocratenadepten, uitgeputte vluchtelingen aan de Italiaanse kusten, tot ijskoude maffiosi op het Falconplein in Antwerpen. Kortom, een verzameling curiosa, zo weggelopen uit een rariteitenkabinet.
Verschillende voorstellingen en associaties zijn het gevolg van pure onwetendheid. Maar is meer aan de hand dan particuliere naïeve voorstellingen. Het is een structureel gegeven. Als één van de vele onderzoekers in de voetsporen van Edward E. Said (Orientalism, 1978) legde Maria Todorova de weke plekken van het balkanismediscours – een structureel geheel van vooroordelen over de Ander, in casu onze medemens in Zuidoost-Europa – bloot. Het is op z'n minst een uitdaging te noemen, om als ontkiemende historica niet te vervallen in deze populaire essentialistische valkuilen. Een poging...
 
Hoogtijd voor een wetenschappelijke erkenning
Twee jaar geleden stootte ik tijdens mijn onderzoek op een consequente academische blindheid voor het Albanese trauma na het communistische verval. Zuiver politicologisch en juridisch onderzoek, dat slechts eenzijdig focust op instellingen (de technische kant van transitional justice: een nieuwe grondwet, democratische verkiezingen, zuiveringen in het politieke apparaat…) creëert een essentialistisch beeld, en stemt allerminst overeen met de complexe werkelijkheid. De waarde van mijn bachelorproef lag dan net ook in het feit dat deze onderzoeken voor de eerste keer geconfronteerd werden met antropologisch veldwerk. Zo konden enkele hardnekkige premissen ondermijnd worden. Het belangrijkste en invloedrijkste dogma dat sneuvelde was de popular indifference-these. Een algemene onverschilligheid bij de Albanese burgers ten opzichte van het verleden kon ontkracht worden na getuigenissen uit de woelige onderbuik van de maatschappij.
 
Een antropologisch en literair sporenonderzoek
Pas na de erkenning van dit trauma, was de weg vrijgemaakt voor een onderzoek naar de littekens die deze mastodontervaring had nagelaten op de “Albanese identiteit”. Zoals een archeoloog op een systematische manier een sporenonderzoek uitvoert, zo wou ik de oorsprong van restanten uit het verleden aanduiden en in hun historische en culturele context kaderen. Deze theoretische grootspraak smeekt om een voorbeeld.
Wanneer in interviews met Albanezen voortdurend de hoopvolle wens tot uiting komt om in het Westen een nieuw leven op te bouwen, is er meer aan de hand dan de stupide American dream van enkele naïeve zielen. Een blik op de recente geschiedenis van Albanië leert ons meer over de politiek die Enver Hoxha – de autoritaire kameraad die het land decennialang met ijzeren hand in zijn krampachtige greep hield – enthousiast en vol overtuiging propageerde. Het strikte dualistische wereldbeeld – in zijn ogen waren er alleen zuiver goede of zuiver slechte burgers – pompte hij met veel geweld in de hoofden van zijn Albanese schaapjes, die het naderhand aan de volgende generaties als een erfenis doorgaven. Het Westen werd vervloekt, bespuwd en beschimpt. Wie ook maar een spetter beïnvloed zou kunnen worden door het verduivelde Westen (vb. burgers in grensregio's, medewerkers bij het staatsorgaan Albturist...), werd door een wijdvertakte en diepdoordringende geheime dienst (Sigurimi, letterlijk: veiligheid) in de gaten gehouden, en zonodig hard aangepakt. Stel u nu voor dat u, na dergelijke onontkoombare realiteit van bijna een halve eeuw, op een klare wintermorgen in februari wakker wordt, tot uw stomme verbazing merkt dat uw Albanese vrienden het standbeeld van Oom Enver met een doffe bons omverwerpen, en plotsklaps uw hele wereldbeeld aan het wankelen gaat. Welkom in de nieuwe wereld, laat die TV's, auto's en kruisbeelden maar aanrukken! Als vliegen op stroop, stromen christelijke, islamitische en kapitalistische missionarissen toe op het Albanese vasteland, likkebaardend om zoveel maagdelijke zieltjes. De wereld staat op zijn kop, de geschiedenis neemt een nieuwe bocht. Wat voorheen uit den boze was, waarvoor men zelfs voor onbepaalde tijd in een geïsoleerd werkkamp kon verdwijnen, kon men nu openlijk belijden en aanbidden. In dergelijke historische context werd volop geëxperimenteerd met taboe-identificaties: religieuze (christelijk, moslim...), ideologische (kapitalistisch, democratisch, traditionele Kanun...), etnische (Aroemenisch, Çamen...).
En hier wordt het pas echt interessant. Want waar wij volgens het overheersende balkanismediscours deze identificaties als metafysische uitspattingen van irrationele wezens afdoen, gaat het heel vaak om rationele en uitgekiende keuzes in een specifieke sociale, economische, culturele of politieke context. Een voorbeeld? Achter wat met een wetenschappelijke term als “sociale mimicry” wordt aangeduid, gaat vaak een complexe realiteit van weloverwogen berederingen schuil. Soms blijkt het bijvoorbeeld voor Albanese immigranten praktisch voordeliger – mensen leren vlug, eens ze een paar keer enkele deuren voor hun neus zien dichtslaan – om hun etnische afkomst en nationaliteit te verhullen. Dit betekent dat Albanezen, om de sociaal-economische onzekerheid (de bijtende werkloosheid en structurele armoede) te omzeilen, uiterlijke kenmerken (vb taal, naamgeving... ) van het gastland overnemen. Een ex-politiek gevangene, die in Duitsland verblijft, getuigt: “We [de Albanezen] have always thought that Westerners value people acccording to their personal values, but it is not like that at all. They ask you “where are you from?” and as soon as you say ”Albania” they become cold and distant, no longer wanting to know you as a person.[1]” Verschillende Albanezen pretenderen daarom Italiaans of Grieks te zijn – vaak vinden ze op die manier een job in een Italiaans of Grieks restaurant.
Maar ook op beleidsniveau zien we dat men vaak heel voorzichtig is in het uitspelen van een “typisch Albanese” identiteit. De huidige president Berisha bijvoorbeeld hoopt zowel van Arabische, als van Westerse kant economische steun los te krijgen, en de deur open te houden voor zo veel mogelijk investeerders. Zijn streven naar een EU-toetreding hoeft daarom niet te botsen met de centen die Tirana van een Arabische sjeik kon lospeuteren om het ambitieuze architecturale project te financieren.
 
“It's a complicated business, all right... Albania..[2].”
Deze uitspraak van Ismail Kadare, Albanië's literaire trots, kunnen we dan ook alleen maar beamen. Eens te meer een pleidooi voor genuanceerd wetenschappelijk onderzoek, met oog voor de complexiteit van een maatschappij, en een nationale identiteit.
