Metaphors in natural language: An application of Conceptual Metaphor Theory to a corpus of journalistic texts

Metaforen: gidsen doorheen het leven
Hoe ligt je naam/als een schip nog op mijn adem. Het gedicht ‘Najaar’ van Herman de Coninck opent met een mooi voorbeeld van een metafoor. Volgens de traditionele visie op metaforiek, die haar oorsprong vindt in de geschriften van de oude Griekse filosoof Aristoteles, is dat soort stijlfiguur een vergelijking van twee begrippen – in dit geval ‘naam’ en ‘schip’ – op basis van hun overeenkomst. De Coninck vergelijkt dus de naam van zijn geliefde met een schip omdat die naam op zijn adem ligt zoals een schip op de golven.
In de moderne literatuurwetenschap wordt de traditionele visie op metaforiek nog vaak als uitgangspunt genomen. Ten onrechte, want reeds in 1980 werd aangetoond dat er voor die visie geen wetenschappelijke basis is. Ze houdt namelijk geen rekening met de mentale processen die alle taalvermogen – en dus ook overdrachtelijke vormen van taal zoals de metafoor – mogelijk maken. Daar probeerde de cognitieve linguïstiek – een van de onderzoeksdomeinen die behoren tot de cognitiewetenschap – een oplossing voor aan te reiken. Die stroming binnen de taalwetenschap dankt haar naam aan het belang dat ze in haar onderzoek van taaluitingen hecht aan andere cognitieve functies dan het menselijk taalvermogen zelf, zoals het denk- en waarnemingsvermogen.
Metaforen als cognitief proces
De basis voor de cognitieve visie op metaforiek werd in 1980 gelegd door George Lakoff en Mark Johnson in ‘Metaphors we live by’. De centrale theorie die deze cognitivisten in hun boek verdedigen is de zogenaamde Conceptual Metaphor Theory, die stelt dat we begrippen interpreteren aan de hand van andere begrippen die veel fundamenteler zijn. Zo proberen we in onze dagelijkse omgang met anderen vat te krijgen op het begrip ‘discussie’ aan de hand van een ander begrip zoals ‘oorlog’. Dat proces wordt ‘conceptuele mapping’ genoemd en uit zich in concrete ‘metaforische uitdrukkingen’ als “Jouw stellingen zijn onverdedigbaar”, “Als je die strategie volgt, zal hij je zeker van de kaart vegen” en “Die opmerking sloeg in als een bom”. Concrete metaforen als deze zijn manifestaties van algemene ‘conceptuele metaforen’, in dit geval DISCUSSIE IS OORLOG. Conceptuele metaforen liggen in de geesten van taalgebruikers dus ten grondslag aan metaforische uitdrukkingen. Dat wordt aangeduid door een conceptuele metafoor weer te geven met hoofdletters.
De metafoor als standaard
Metaforen worden vaak gezien als voorbehouden voor dichterlijke lieden. Nogmaals ten onrechte. Je hoeft niet Jotie T’Hooft te heten om een metafoor te gebruiken die het leven voorstelt als een film- of theatervoorstelling, zoals in de versregels mijn leven dat ik zag opbranden,/een toeschouwer, niet bij machte/de verschrikkelijke zaal te verlaten. Iedereen kan in gewoon taalgebruik een metaforische uitdrukking gebruiken van het type HET LEVEN IS EEN FILM/TONEELSTUK, getuige daarvan alledaagse uitdrukkingen als “Hij heeft zijn hele leven in scène gezet”. Meer zelfs; taalgebruikers kunnen niet anders dan zich uitdrukken met behulp van metaforen. En dat talloze keren per dag, meestal onbewust.
Toepassing van de metafoortheorie
Het theoretische gedeelte van deze paper biedt een benadering van de traditionele en de cognitieve metafoortheorie. Het tweede deel beschrijft hoe de Conceptual Metaphor Theory in een kleinschalig taalkundig onderzoek aangewend werd om natuurlijk geschreven taalgebruik te analyseren. Op basis van krantenartikels uit de online-editie van de Britse krant The Daily Telegraph werd een corpus samengesteld waaruit vormen van metaforisch taalgebruik werden geselecteerd. Die metaforische uitdrukkingen werden vervolgens geclassificeerd als concrete manifestaties van conceptuele metaforen.
“Liefde is een kaartspel,” zong Lisa del Bo ooit. Of hoe ook het Vlaamse levenslied gebaat is bij conceptuele metaforen.
