Psychopathie in termen van persoonlijkheid. Een onderzoek bij adolescenten

 

Is mijn buur een psychopaat?

 

Ronald Janssen, Kim De Gelder, Hans Van Themsche, Els Clottemans, enz. Het zijn haast geen onbekende namen meer in de geschiedenis van de criminaliteit. België wordt sinds jaren geteisterd door gruwelijke verkrachtingen en moorddaden. Deze vaststelling wordt nog onrustwekkender wanneer duidelijk wordt dat de moordenaar vaak een persoon is uit de nabije omgeving, zoals buurman Janssen of beste vriendin, Els Clottemans. Het wordt al bijna vanzelfsprekend dat mensen achterdochtig worden bij een vriendelijke “goedemorgen” van de buren. Opvallend is ook dat misdaden steeds vaker gepleegd worden door jonge adolescenten, zoals De Gelder en Van Themsche. De gewone bevolking zou moeten kunnen voorspellen welke jongeren misdaden zullen plegen. Maar hoe begin je aan een dergelijke analyse? Hoe zie je aan een kind of er een moordenaar in schuilt? Welke zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken van criminelen in spe? Onderzoekers van de universiteit van Leuven hebben getracht om psychopate adolescenten te beschrijven aan de hand van herkenbare persoonlijkheidstrekken. Op die manier kan men een techniek ontwikkelen om risicovolle jongeren op te sporen om op zijn beurt preventief te kunnen optreden.

Psychopathie is eigenlijk een persoonlijkheidsstoornis. Het betreft met andere woorden een persoonlijkheid, die niet normaal functioneert waardoor het de persoon in kwestie zelf of anderen “stoort”. Een persoonlijkheid is niet makkelijk te veranderen. Je bent zo of je bent zo niet. Zo is de één bijvoorbeeld erg spontaan en sociaal, de ander erg verlegen en introvert. De extreme gevallen worden in de psychologie vaak geclassificeerd onder “stoornissen”. Niet enkel persoonlijkheidsstoornissen vallen hieronder, maar ook ontwikkelingsstoornissen, angststoornissen, stemmingsstoornissen, enz. Zo hebben extreem introverte personen wellicht een sociale angststoornis, extreem spontane personen hebben mogelijk ADHD, extreem rationele personen hebben misschien een depressie, enz. Bij psychopaten zijn er verschillende persoonlijkheidstrekken die extreem functioneren. Deze zijn echter niet eenvoudig te definiëren omdat psychopathie zelf ook geen eenduidig begrip is. Doorgaans wordt het begrip psychopathie opgesplitst in drie grote groepen: egocentrisme (samen met grandioos zelfwaardegevoel, pathologisch liegen en manipulatie), ongevoeligheid, en impulsiviteit en onverantwoordelijkheid. Men moet dus rekening houden met alle drie deze kernaspecten om te weten welke persoonlijkheidstrekken extreem zijn bij psychopaten. De voornaamste bevindingen waren de volgende.

Psychopate individuen vertonen zich op de eerste plaats erg vriendelijk, maar in realiteit zijn ze erg onvriendelijk. Hoe vaak werd er wel niet gezegd wat een aardige man Janssen wel niet was. Vooral door hun egocentrisme en ongevoeligheid zijn ze bijvoorbeeld niet te vertrouwen, hebben ze geen gevoel voor medelijden en zijn ze niet zorgzaam. Zo schrijft Janssen in een brief naar een tijdschrift: “waar ik van wakker lig, is dat ik nooit de kans krijg om geloofwaardig over te komen en echt te vertellen wat er gebeurd is en dat het me spijt”. Redacteurs vragen zich af hoe oprecht deze spijt is.

Een tweede belangrijk kenmerk is dat psychopaten een gebrek aan gewetensvolheid hebben. Door hun impulsieve levensstijl zijn ze bijvoorbeeld weinig ambitieus, onordelijk, denken ze weinig na en hebben ze geen zelfdiscipline. De werkloosheid van De Gelder is wellicht een gevolg van zijn gebrekkige gewetensvolheid.

Psychopaten zijn door hun impulsieve levensstijl enerzijds extraverte personen, in die zin dat ze energievol en avontuurlijk zijn. Door hun egocentrisme kunnen ze ook erg dominant overkomen. Anderzijds zijn psychopaten net niet extravert, want hoewel ze sociaal overkomen, hebben ze door hun ongevoeligheid een gebrek aan sociale vaardigheden en lopen ze ook niet erg vrolijk door het leven. Bij wijze van voorbeeld zal een psychopaat een knappe dame op een impulsieve manier aanspreken, maar zal hij zich niet kunnen inleven in hoe de vrouw zich hierbij voelt.

Verder blijkt dat psychopaten emotioneel eerder stabiel zijn. Opmerkelijk is dat ze niet snel bang worden. Een levenslange gevangenisstraf zal hen met andere woorden niet snel afschrikken. Ook de angst van de gevolgen van een gruwelijke moordslag op zich, zal geen invloed hebben.

Een psychopaat heeft ten slotte weinig vermogen tot fantaseren, ideeën ontwikkelen, esthetisch te zijn enz., hoewel ze door hun manipulatief karakter of leugens eerder het tegenovergestelde kunnen doen laten uitschijnen.

De volgende stap van onderzoekers is om op basis van bovenstaand profiel een techniek te ontwikkelen om de subgroep van psychopate adolescenten te identificeren. De techniek is echter nog erg jong en moet nog beter op punt gesteld worden. Desalniettemin betekent het onderzoek een groeiende hoop voor een vroege herkenning van psychopathische kenmerken.

Conclusie van dit alles: als je wil nagaan of jouw buurjongen, vriend, vriendin, kennis, enz. een toekomstige moordenaar is, waag je dan aan een eerste simpele persoonlijkheidsanalyse. Het betreft gekende persoonlijkheidstrekken, die bij deze subgroep net iets duidelijker zijn.
