The Role of The News Media in the Shaping of Issue Ownership

 

Nieuwsmedia beïnvloeden verkiezingsresultaat

De nieuwsmedia beïnvloedden het resultaat van de Vlaamse verkiezingen in 2009. Tot deze conclusie kwam student politieke communicatie, Iskander De Bruycker, in zijn masterthesis aan de Universiteit Antwerpen. Wie vaak de krant leest of kijkt naar het journaal, kan gemakkelijker politieke partijen en thema’s aan elkaar linken. De politieke partij die de kiezer linkt met het meest prominente thema van het moment, heeft een garantie op verkiezingswinst. In 2009 was dat thema de financiële crisis. Dit verklaart volgens De Bruycker deels het succes van CD&V bij de toenmalige verkiezingen.

Het zit al ver in het geheugen, maar bij de verkiezingen van 2009 stond de financiële crisis bovenaan de publieke agenda. Uit het onderzoek van De Bruycker blijkt dat de Vlaamse kiezers hoofdzakelijk CD&V en Open VLD met dit thema associeerden. “Dat is ook niet verwonderlijk, deze partijen maakten op dat moment deel uit van de federale regering en voerden het woord in de media.”

“CD&V en Open Vld waren gebaat bij de financiële crisis”

“Wel opvallend is dat kiezers die meer de krant lezen en kijken naar het televiesiejournaal eerder geneigd waren om CD&V en Open Vld met de financiële crisis te linken. Dat bleek ook in het  voordeel van deze partijen. Wie de crisis linkte met Open Vld of CD&V had twee maal zoveel kans om op deze partijen te stemmen. CD&V en Open Vld waren dus enigszins gebaat bij de financiële crisis. Voor Open Vld bleek deze bonus niet voldoende, ze verloren de verkiezingen. CD&V boekte wel electorale winst”, aldus De Bruycker.

Ook relevant voor komende verkiezingen

De Bruycker meent dat deze logica ook opgaat voor komende verkiezingen: “Omwille van de institutionele impasse zal de staatshervorming onvermijdelijk bovenaan de media-agenda staan bij eventuele verkiezingen. Hoe dieper ons land afdaalt in de impasse, hoe prominenter het thema staatshervorming. De partij die de Vlaming daarmee linkt heeft dan automatisch een grote voorsprong. Het behoeft geen wetenschappelijk bewijs dat de Vlaming NV-A ziet als grote pleitbezorger van een staatshervorming. Deze partij zal de vruchten plukken van de institutionele impasse bij eventuele verkiezingen.”

Zijn eindwerk leverde de student de jaarlijkse thesisprijs Politieke Communicatie op. De jury met onder andere Marc Van De Looverbosch, Dirk Sterckx en Noël Slangen prezen het werk omwille van de relevantie en kwaliteit. De Bruycker lacht een lange en welverdiende vakantie tegemoet.
