Peru is een land in de periferie van de wereldeconomie, waar mijnbouw het fundament is van de nationale export en veel werkgelegenheid creëert. Het verband tussen arbeid en gezondheid is reeds aangetoond in verschillende onderzoeken. Arbeidsongevallen, verstoorde spierontwikkelingen en depressies zijn enkele voorbeelden die dit verband staven. In de Peruaanse mijnbouw waren in 2011 8972 arbeidsongevallen, waarvan 66 met dodelijke afloop. Tot op heden ontbraken in Peru studies die mijnarbeid vanuit het oogpunt van gezondheid onderzoeken. In zijn masterproef vulde Lander Vermeerbergen, masterstudent in arbeid – en organisatiesociologie, deze leemte op. Hij keek niet enkel naar de gezondheid van mijnwerkers, maar koppelde deze aan migratie en aan de flexibilisering van mijnarbeid. Hij werkte samen met de Belgische ngo FOS en de grootste Peruaanse mijnbouwvakbond.  Gezondheid van werknemers Overwerkt zijn, een term die alle negatieve gezondheidsaspecten van lange arbeidsdagen omvat, en het job-demand-control model, dat de combinatie van taakvariatie en van regelcontrole als oorzaak van gezonde en ongezonde arbeid aanwijst, vormen een geïntegreerd kader om de gezondheid van werknemers te bekijken. Meer specifiek is volgens het job-demand-control model enkel arbeid met een hoge taakvariatie en een hoge regelcapaciteit gezond. Lange arbeidsdagen en een lage taakvariatie en/of lage regelcapaciteit zorgen immers voor een hogere aanwezigheid van stress bij werknemers, die op haar beurt leidt tot onder andere cholesterolproblemen, vermoeidheid en arbeidsongevallen.  Mijnarbeid en regionale migratie Mijngebieden krijgen in Peru te maken met grote migratiegolven vanuit diverse regio’s. Deze migratiegolven ontstaan door de grote werkgelegenheid in de mijnbouwindustrie. Migratie opent de mogelijkheid van dualiteiten, al dan niet ontstaan door discriminatie, op gebied van de arbeidssituatie tussen lokale en niet-lokale mijnwerkers, inheemse en niet-inheemse mijnwerkers en ten slotte mijnwerkers met een stedelijke en een rurale achtergrond. Wetenschappelijke studies buiten Peru tonen aan dat lokale mijnwerkers, inheemse mijnwerkers en rurale mijnwerkers meer ongezonde arbeid verrichten dan andere mijnwerkers.  Mijnarbeid en flexibilisering Glave en Kuramoto betogen dat een versoepeling van de Peruaanse wetgeving leidde tot meer bedrijven in onderaanneming. In 2004 werkte 67,3% van de mijnwerkers in bedrijven in onderaanneming. Tussen 1996 en 2002 vermenigvuldigde het absoluut aantal mijnwerkers in deze bedrijven met 2,6. Wetenschappelijke studies uitgevoerd buiten Peru schetsen dat werknemers in bedrijven in onderaanneming grotere negatieve gezondheidseffecten ondervinden dan werknemers in hoofdbedrijven.Professor Dr. Ospina, hoofd van het departement van Arbeid en Gezondheid in Lima, argumenteert dat werknemers met een tijdelijk arbeidscontract een slechtere gezondheid hebben dan werknemers met een vast arbeidscontract. De wetenschappelijk literatuur verbindt tijdelijke arbeidscontracten met onder andere psychische ziekten, problemen met de hartslagader en arbeidsongevallen. De literatuur schetst een uitzondering. Mijnwerkers die in hun normale leven boeren zijn in afgelegen dorpen kunnen opteren om geld te verdienen in de mijnbouw in de periodes wanneer er weinig tot geen arbeid te verrichten valt op het platteland, ze verkiezen dus tijdelijke arbeidscontracten. De keuzemogelijkheid om te kiezen voor een tijdelijk contract terwijl een vast contract mogelijk is, zou een positief effect hebben op gezondheid. Indien deze mogelijkheid niet bestaat maar de werknemer een tijdelijk contract heeft gekregen terwijl hij of zij een vast contract wou hebben, creëert negatieve gevolgen voor de gezondheid.  De paden naar ongezonde arbeid De resultaten van dit onderzoek tonen middels een kwalitatief comparatief onderzoek aan dat alle mijnwerkers werken in ongezonde arbeidsposities. De weloverwogen keuze van de mijn en de respondenten maken een veralgemening van de resultaten mogelijk. Dit onderzoek groef dieper en keek naar verschillen tussen mijnwerkers. Globaal geschetst kan worden geargumenteerd dat regionale migratie, onderaanneming en tijdelijk arbeid een samenspel van configuraties vormen waarlangs zich ongezonde en minder ongezonde arbeid verdeelt. Regionale migratie creëert in de Peruaanse mijnbouwindustrie in 2012 verschillen tussen de gezondheid van mijnwerkers. De gezondheid van mijnwerkers verschilt tussen urbane en rurale mijnwerkers enerzijds en tussen lokale en niet-lokale mijnwerker anderzijds. De gezondheid inheemse en niet-inheemse mijnwerkers verschilt niet. Urbane mijnwerkers hebben een grotere kans om overwerkt te zijn dan rurale mijnwerkers met een vast arbeidscontract. Het is echter niet zo dat rurale en urbane mijnwerkers een verschillende positie bekleden in het job-demand-control model. De positie van lokale en niet-lokale mijnwerkers verschilt in het job-demand-control model maar lokale mijnwerkers oefenen niet meer ongezonde arbeid uit dan niet-lokale mijnwerkers. Lokale mijnwerkers met een tijdelijk contract en niet-lokale mijnwerkers met een vast contract werkzaam voor het hoofdbedrijf zijn eerder tewerkgesteld in gezonde arbeidsposities. Ongezonde arbeidsplaatsen worden ingevuld door tijdelijke niet-lokale mijnwerkers, niet-lokale mijnwerkers die werken in bedrijven in onderaanneming, vaste lokale mijnwerkers en vaste niet-lokale mijnwerkers. De gezondheid van mijnwerkers die werken in bedrijven in onderaanneming verschilt van die van mijnwerkers die werken voor hoofdbedrijven. Terwijl het werken in hoofdbedrijven of in bedrijven in onderaanneming geen verschil veroorzaakt in het al dan niet overwerkt zijn, is de positie van mijnwerkers die werken in bedrijven in onderaanneming en mijnwerkers die werken in hoofdbedrijven verschillend in het job-demand-control model. Het werken in onderaanneming is ongezonder indien de mijnwerker een vast contract heeft dan wanneer de mijnwerker niet-lokaal is en een vast contract heeft in het hoofdbedrijf. De gezondheid van mijnwerkers verschilt naargelang hun contracttype. Tijdelijke mijnwerkers zijn doorgaans overwerkt terwijl vaste rurale mijnwerkers doorgaans niet overwerkt zijn. Tijdelijk niet-lokale mijnwerkers, lokale werknemers met een vast contract, vaste mijnwerkers in bedrijven in onderaanneming en vaste niet-lokale mijnwerkers bevinden zich meer in ongezonde arbeidsposities in het job-demand control model dan tijdelijke lokale mijnwerkers en vaste niet-lokale mijnwerkers die werken in bedrijven in onderaanneming.  Besluit In de inleiding werd het liedje ‘Canción del minero’ van Jara (1961) aangehaald waarin hij het fysieke lijden van een mijnwerker bezingt. In Peru hebben regionale migratiegolven en de flexibilisering van arbeid tot gevolg dat ongezonde en minder ongezonde arbeid deterministisch door bepaalde mijnwerkers in de Peruaanse mijnaderen worden uitgeoefend.
