Zijn metalheads 'relentless reckless forever'? - Een experimenteel onderzoek naar de effecten van heavy metal op roekeloos gedrag

 

Schreeuwende metalheads bijten niet

Waar denk jij aan als men je vraagt een typische metalfan te beschrijven? Lange, wilde haren, zwarte kledij met duistere bandnamen, onverstaanbaar geschreeuw boven luide, agressieve gitaarlijnen? Je ziet misschien een kolkende mensenmassa bij een podium voor je, waarbij het lijkt alsof iedereen met elkaar aan het vechten is. Op de laatste editie van Maanrock te Mechelen legde de politie nog het optreden van Diablo Blvd. stil. De politie was van mening dat het er tijdens het optreden van de metalgroep van comedian Alex Agnew te ruig aan toe ging. Een ander voorbeeld waar je mogelijk aan denkt, is de schietpartij in de Columbine High School waar twee jongemannen een bloedbad aanrichtten. Achteraf bleken de daders heavy metalfans te zijn. Zo ontstaan er veel stereotypes die het metalgenre niet ten goede komen. In mijn masterproef onderzocht ik in de eerste plaats het idee dat metal zou aanzetten tot roekeloos gedrag.

In de adolescentie wordt er veel geëxperimenteerd en zoeken jongeren naar een eigen identiteit en plaats in onze maatschappij. Bij de meeste adolescenten verloopt dit zonder problemen. De kleinere groep jongeren die wel problemen vertonen in deze overgangsfase krijgen in media en wetenschappelijk onderzoek (terecht) meer aandacht. Hierdoor hebben sommigen echter het beeld van de zogenaamde ‘onhandelbare jeugd’, een onterechte veralgemening. Hetzelfde geldt voor het metalgenre. Deze muziek is slechts één van de vele vormen van media in onze Westerse maatschappij. Voor velen is het gewoon een ontspannend tijdverdrijf, een uitlaatklep of een bron van sensatie. De sociale en politieke thema’s die aan bod komen in de teksten kunnen jongeren aanzetten tot nadenken en het vormen van een eigen mening. Samen met de aansluiting bij een groep van gelijkgestemde zielen zorgt dit ervoor dat metal jongeren kan helpen bij het ontwikkelen van hun eigen identiteit. Buitenstaanders die niet verder kijken dan de uiterlijke kenmerken van het metalgenre en blijven hangen bij de enkele individuen die in opspraak komen, ontwikkelen zo inderdaad een negatief beeld. De invloed van dit omstreden genre op de zoekende adolescent is dan ook een interessant studiegebied.

Bestaand wetenschappelijk onderzoek focuste zich vooral op de relatie tussen heavy metal en een mogelijk negatieve invloed. Zo vond men al een verband tussen een voorkeur voor heavy metal en emotionele problemen, schoolproblemen, zelfdoding, vervreemding, gedragsproblemen, agressie en roekeloos gedrag. Verscheidene onderzoeken hebben al kritiek gekregen en ze kunnen bovendien geen oorzakelijkheid aantonen. Het is niet duidelijk of heavy metal deze problemen veroorzaakt of dat een voorkeur voor heavy metal hoort bij deze gedragingen. Of zouden er nog andere factoren in het spel zijn? Om hierover een uitspraak te kunnen doen, moet men gebruik maken van experimenteel onderzoek. Enkele jaren geleden legde een andere student aan de Faculteit Psychologie en Pedagogische Wetenschappen van de UGent al de basis voor mijn onderzoek. Hij vond dat luisteren naar heavy metal vaker leidde tot een onbewuste houding tot het stellen van roekeloos gedrag. Toenmalige deelnemers zeiden na het experiment ook zelf dat ze effectief meer zin hadden om iets roekeloos te doen. In mijn eigen onderzoek wou ik nagaan of deze houding ook effectief vertaald wordt in roekeloos gedrag.

Mijn steekproef bestond uit adolescente metalfans (17- tot 19-jarigen) en een even grote groep personen die andere muziekgenres verkiezen. Beide groepen bevatten evenveel mannen en vrouwen. Ik maakte gebruik van twee sets muziek die de deelnemers moesten beluisteren tijdens een experiment op de faculteit. De helft kreeg gedurende twaalf minuten stevige metal te horen uit verscheidene subgenres. De andere helft mocht even lang genieten van rustige popmuziek. Na het beluisteren van deze muziek mochten de deelnemers een computerspel spelen waarbij risico’s nemen hen een mooi geldbedrag kon opleveren. Namen ze echter te grote risico’s dan konden ze hun verdiende centen even snel terug kwijt spelen. Deze computertaak, de Balloon Analogue Risk Task, was in het verleden al gebruikt in wetenschappelijk onderzoek om roekeloos gedrag te onderzoeken. De scores hierop zouden samenhangen met persoonlijkheidskenmerken, bijvoorbeeld impulsiviteit, die dergelijk gedrag voorspellen.

Uit de resultaten bleek dat metalheads, net als niet-fans, geen persoonlijkheidsstructuur hebben die neigt naar een hogere nood aan sensaties. Net als voorgaand onderzoek vonden we wel dat personen die net metal hadden beluisterd, zowel fans als niet-fans, aangaven dat ze meer zin hadden om iets roekeloos te gaan doen. De personen die de rustige muziek hadden gehoord, hadden geen drang tot zulk gedrag. De hoofdvraag van mijn onderzoek was natuurlijk of dit ook samenhing met het effectief stellen van roekeloos gedrag. We vonden geen verschillen in gedrag tussen personen die net metal hadden beluisterd en zij die de rustige muziek te horen hadden gekregen, niet bij de metalfans en niet bij de niet-fans. De conclusie is dus dat wanneer jongeren een roekeloze houding ontwikkelen bij het beluisteren van heavy metal dit niet automatisch betekent dat er ook roekeloos gedrag zal volgen. Mijn resultaten worden gesteund door andere wetenschappelijke studies die vonden dat de overgang van houding naar feitelijk gedrag niet zo snel gemaakt wordt. Een simpel voorbeeld hiervan zijn rokers. Iedereen weet dat roken ongezond is, maar deze houding wordt echter niet zomaar omgezet in gedrag, namelijk stoppen met roken. Of je een houding omzet in gedrag hangt onder andere af van de mate waarin je zelfcontrole hebt en of dat gedrag past binnen je eigen normen en waarden. Dit zijn net twee zaken die sterk tot ontwikkeling komen in de adolescentie.

Sommigen zouden langs de ene kant kunnen argumenteren dat een ruig genre als heavy metal ervoor zorgt dat jongeren hun zelfcontrole overboord gooien en afwijken van de algemene normen door hun nog niet volledig ontwikkeld redeneervermogen. Langs de andere kant zou men dan weer kunnen stellen dat een controversieel genre als heavy metal de zelfcontrole en bestaande normen net sterk uitdaagt. Hierdoor worden jongeren zelfbewuster en kunnen ze een meer overtuigde mening gaan vormen over bepaalde onderwerpen. Hoe metal hier precies toe bijdraagt, is stof voor verder onderzoek. Voorlopig kunnen we in elk geval al besluiten dat schreeuwende metalheads niet noodzakelijk bijten.
