Apps for Mobile Language Learning: A Market Research into English Language Learning Apps

Let the learning game begin!

Digitale revolutie transformeert nu ook hoger onderwijs

Het onderzoeksbureau Gartner voorspelt dat de verkoop van mobiele technologieën, waaronder smartphones en tablets, de kaap van 1 miljard zal overschrijden in 2013. Volgens het Amerikaanse bureau zal minstens twee derden van de beroepsbevolking een smartphone bezitten en 40% digitaal werken tegen 2016. Onze hedendaagse kenniseconomie en de groeiende aanwezigheid van mobiele communicatietechnologieën brachten het afgelopen decennium drastische maatschappelijke veranderingen teweeg, zowel in het beroeps- als privéleven. Nadat bedrijven gretig hebben ingespeeld op deze digitale revolutie, is het nu aan hogeronderwijsinstituten om digitale technologieën in hun curricula te integreren en zo een antwoord te bieden op de noden van de 21e eeuw.

Houdt het hoger onderwijs voldoende rekening met nieuwe leerbehoeftes van onze digital natives, en voorziet het hen van de nodige intellectuele vaardigheden om stand te houden in een digitale kenniseconomie? De scriptie “Apps for Mobile Learning: A Market Research into English Language Learning Apps” brengt recente ontwikkelingen op het vlak van digitaal leren in kaart. Aangezien nieuwe trends in het hoger onderwijs, waaronder tablet computing, om pedagogisch verantwoord onderwijsmateriaal vragen, werd vervolgens via een marktonderzoek de pedagogische waarde van bestaande educatieve taalapps onder de loep genomen. Taaldocenten krijgen een checklist met praktische evaluatiecriteria aangereikt waaraan een educatieve taalapp moet voldoen om een pedagogische meerwaarde te bieden aan studenten. Als kers op de taart stelt de scriptie een eigen app-prototype voor. De “English Irregular Verb”-app poogt hiermee de taaldocenten alvast een duwtje in de juiste richting te geven.

Mobile learning heeft de toekomst

“Blended learning heeft dé toekomst”, aldus Mark Rutte, voormalig Nederlands Staatssecretaris van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap (OCW). Maar wat houdt deze populaire onderwijsterm precies in? Wikipedia brengt soelaas: Blended learning wordt door diverse  experts genoemd als hét leerconcept voor studenten in onze 21ste digitale eeuw – klik – blended learning combineert de voordelen van afstandsonderwijs, klassikaal onderwijs en e-learning – klik – voortbordurend op de term e-learning wordt met mobile learning gedoeld op digitaal leren via draadloze tablets en smartphones – klik – mobile learning (m-learning) staat studenten toe om op een gemotiveerde, persoonlijke en/of collaboratieve manier leerstof te verwerken.

Volgt u nog? Voor onze digital natives zijn hyperlinks nochtans heel gewoon. In het hedendaagse onderwijs is e-learning zo sterk ingeburgerd dat studenten zich dagelijks een weg door de vele internetpagina’s en hyperlinks heen banen om zo de geschikte informatie te vergaren voor een paper, een moeilijke wiskundeoefening of vertaalopdracht. Via online e-platforms zoals – Chamilo, Minerva of Toledo – verspreiden docenten hun lesslides en worden discussiefora opgestart. Talrijke studies onderschrijven de voordelen van deze interactieve, “blended” onderwijsvorm waarin de digitale wereld een aanvulling vormt op traditionele hoorcolleges. Naast het succes van e-learning, is ook de alomtegenwoordigheid van smartphones en de groeiende aanwezigheid van tablets op campussen niet aan het oog van de alerte pedagoog ontsnapt.

In de literatuur wordt vanuit verscheidene academische hoeken dan ook een “mobile learning”-revolutie aangekondigd. Geavanceerde mobiele technologieën staan de hedendaagse student toe om eender waar en op eender welk moment kennis bij te schaven. Betekent dit dat hoger onderwijsdocenten volledig overbodig worden? Helemaal niet. Digitaal leren biedt net een waardevolle aanvulling op de klassieke hoorcolleges doordat het studenten de kans biedt om op een persoonlijke en gemotiveerde manier leerstof in te oefenen en te verwerken, waar en wanneer dan ook.

Is there an app for that?

De groeiende belangstelling voor digitaal leren in het hoger onderwijs valt samen met de lancering van de iPad in 2010 en de daaropvolgende tablets. In zijn jaarlijkse verslag over digitale trends in het hoger onderwijs uitte het new media consortium (NMC) zich lovend over het potentieel van de nieuwe tablettechnologie: “Dankzij het grote scherm, de intuïtieve aanraaktechnologie en het handige meeneemformaat zijn tablets ideale tools om lesmateriaal op een visueel aantrekkelijke manier voor te stellen en te delen.” De tablet maakte dan ook al gauw zijn intrede in universiteiten wereldwijd. De laatste twee jaar werden verscheidene, succesvolle proefprogramma’s opgestart waarin studenten in plaats van de traditionele stapel handboeken een tablet kregen voorzien van lesmateriaal, digitale handboeken, en enkele andere educatieve apps.

Tablets en smartphones kunnen hun educatieve potentie pas verwezenlijken wanneer ze ook pedagogisch verantwoorde leermiddelen bieden, zoals educatieve apps. Vooral het taalonderwijs zou baat vinden bij apps die studenten toelaten om buiten de schoolomgeving een vreemde taal in te oefenen en zo beter te verwerven. Hoewel er in het taalonderwijs zeker vraag is naar zulke krachtige leermiddelen, is er zowel vanuit pedagogisch als linguïstische hoek nog maar weinig onderzoek gevoerd naar het ontwikkelen van pedagogisch waardevolle taalapps. Volgens Paul Sweeney, onderzoeker aan Eduworlds Knowledge Ltd., wijst deze onderzoeklacune erop dat hogeronderwijsinstituten de educatieve potentie van taalapps nog niet volledig erkend hebben.

Onderzoekprimeur naar Engelse werkwoordapps

“Er is een te grote afstand tussen app-ontwikkelaars met de geschikte technische knowhow maar gebrekkige taal- en pedagogische kennis enerzijds, en linguïsten en pedagogen met weinig verstand van app-ontwikkeling anderzijds. Ontwikkelaars, ondernemers, docenten en linguïsten zouden moeten samenwerken om pedagogisch waardevolle, commercieel haalbare en technisch bruikbare taalapps te introduceren in het hoger onderwijs”, aldus Sweeney. Aan de faculteit Toegepaste Taalkunde van de Hogeschool Gent werd zijn oproep alvast aangehoord en de eerste stap naar de ontwikkeling van pedagogisch waardevolle taalapps gezet.

Via een marktonderzoek naar “English Irregular Verb”-apps en aanvullende enquêtes naar het app-gebruik en de leervoorkeuren van eerstejaarsstudenten kwam de faculteit met een app-prototype voor de dag dat alle functies en vereisten omvat waaraan een pedagogisch waardevolle taalapp moet voldoen. De faculteit doet nu een oproep aan pedagogen en app-ontwikkelaars om mee op de boot te springen voor de effectieve ontwikkeling van de app. Het vakoverschrijdend onderzoek toont aan dat het na de bedrijfswereld, nu ook hoog tijd is voor hogeronderwijsinstituten om in te spelen op de groeiende aanwezigheid van mobiele technologieën in het huidige digitale tijdperk.
