Onderzoek naar de mariene grenslaag in een lagesnelheidswindtunnel

In hoeverre heeft leven en werken aan boord van een chemicaliëntanker een invloed op de gezondheid van de werknemers? Om op deze vraag een antwoord te formuleren moeten de concentraties van de gassen die rond het schip hangen bekend zijn. Onderzoek aan boord van chemicaliëntankers is niet altijd vanzelfsprekend, gezien de verschillende variabelen zoals windsnelheid, windrichting, soort gas, design van het schip,...

Met dit in het achterhoofd werd er gekozen om onderzoek te verrichten in de windtunnel van Peutz  te Molenhoek in Nederland. Deze windtunnel is gebouwd met oog op metingen van onder andere configuraties op land, bijvoorbeeld om de luchtkwaliteit te evalueren als er een nieuwe verkeerstunnel moet worden gegraven. Parameters zoals snelheid en turbulentie op zee zijn daarentegen anders dan op land. In dit onderzoeksproject wordt een nieuwe configuratie gezocht om de mariene grenslaag, de wrijvingslaag boven zee, te simuleren in een lagesnelheidswindtunnel. 

Allereerst wordt besproken hoe de grenslaag is opgebouwd, naar welke referentiewaarden we streven, hoe we wind kunnen voorstellen in een grafiek en welke parameters wind beïnvloeden.

Vervolgens wordt aan de hand van een twintigtal profielmetingen onderzocht hoe we enerzijds de referentiewaarden benaderen, en anderzijds waarop de onderdelen van de windtunnel een invloed hebben. Uiteindelijk werd een configuratie uitgekiend die in de buurt kwam van de gewenste referentiewaarden. 

Door dit onderzoeksproject kan er in de toekomst meer onderzoek gebeuren voor de maritieme industrie.
