Cultural Fusion in Retail

Kunnen twee culturen gefuseerd worden om een retail-omgeving te creëren in totale harmonie?

Wereldwijd  vertegenwoordigen culturen de tradities, gewoontes en overtuigingen van mensen. Ondanks verschillen hebben ze meer gelijkenissen dan men op het eerste zicht zou denken. Eén overeenkomst is de aanwezigheid van retail/handel. Sinds het begin van de beschaving is handel een bron van overleven geweest. Het zorgde voor culturele crossovers en een toenemende diverse samenleving.

In mijn scriptie van interieurarchitectuur combineer ik mijn interesse in culturen met retail. Dit leidde tot de creatie van  een retail-omgeving - meer concreet een winkelruimte in Brussel - waarin architecturale aspecten van twee culturen gefuseerd worden.

Om een positief interactief platform te creëren werken we met twee  groepen: een gevende en een ontvangende. Als gevende groep koos ik voor de Arabische, oosterse cultuur. Statistieken tonen aan dat ongeveer 25% van de Brusselse bevolking moslim is, met een groot aantal uit Arabische landen en omstreken. De ontvangende, westerse cultuur is vertegenwoordigd door het gebouw de Sint-Gorikshal (1881) in de Stad Brussel. Niet alleen is Brussel van groot belang in België en Europa, de stad is ook geschikt vanwege zijn demografie en diversiteit. Retail kan een belangrijke rol spelen om een gevoel van herkenning, begrip en vertrouwen te creëren tussen culturen en mensen.

De scriptie is opgebouwd uit verschillende delen: een literatuur- en beeldstudie van de Arabische cultuur, van de westerse cultuur en de toepassing van de onderzoeksresultaten in het uiteindelijk project nl. een winkelruimte ontwerpen waar architecturale aspecten van twee culturen gefuseerd zijn.

Als eerste heb ik de Arabische cultuur bestudeerd. Aangezien de Arabische wereld gedomineerd wordt door religie, kan de aanwezige architectuur grotendeels beschouwd worden als synoniem aan de Islamitische architectuur. Het heeft verschillende architectuur- types zoals religieus en seculier, bijvoorbeeld een moskee en een marktplaats respectievelijk. Architectuur vormt samen met ornamentiek een geheel, ze zijn onafscheidelijk. Ze vormen ruimtes in totale harmonie met elkaar. De weelderigheid van de ornamentiek draagt in de architectuur bij tot een belangrijk principe, namelijk continuïteit in een ruimte. Het ontstaan en gebruik van ornamentiek zoals kalligrafie, arabesk en geometrische patronen heb ik in mijn scriptie uitgebreid onderzocht. Het onderzoek heeft geleid tot het concluderen van typische kenmerken, principes, materialen en betekenissen.

Ten tweede heb ik onderzoek verricht naar de westerse cultuur, in dit geval specifiek de Sint-Gorikshal, te Brussel. Het pand en de locatie heeft een rijke geschiedenis. Het was een voormalig publieksplein en marktplaats, en dus een ontmoetingspunt voor mensen. Ik bestudeerde de Vlaams-Neorenaissance architectuur van het pand. Zo is de aanwezigheid  van een trapgevel een typerend kenmerk voor dit gebouw. Bij de analyse worden er ook gelijkenissen gevonden met de Islamitische architectuur zoals de aanwezigheid van een binnenkoer, omringd door bogen.

Tot slot zijn de onderzoeksresultaten geïmplementeerd in de uitwerking van het winkelproject in Brussel. Hierbij werden de resultaten van de gevende, Arabische cultuur toegepast en geïntegreerd in het pand van de Sint-Gorikshal, westerse cultuur. In de scriptie wordt weergegeven hoe talloze ontwerpbeslissingen systematisch genomen werden met als doel een evenwichtige fusie tussen beide culturen te creëren. Hierbij ligt de nadruk op bestaande gelijkenissen in plaats van verschillen.

Het retail-concept van het project is gebaseerd op twee aspecten: cultuur en commerce. Het resultaat is een platform bestaande uit diverse activiteiten variërend van kunst en evenementen tot mode- en consumerende producten. Workshops, tentoonstellingen en andere events vinden plaats om het publiek vertrouwd te maken met onderwerpen uit beide culturen. In de retail-omgeving zijn verkochte artikelen zelf een fusie of reflectie van beide groepen. De omgeving geeft de sfeer weer van souks en bazaars, van het oosten. Het is ook een verwijzing naar het vroegere marktgebeuren van het pand zelf.

De winkelruimte is gebaseerd op het introverte, naar binnen gekeerde karakter van de Islamitische architectuur. Een belangrijk architecturaal kenmerk is de centrale ruimte als kern van het gebouw. Verschillende retail-functies zijn architecturaal zo geplaatst om consumenten te leiden naar de centrale ontmoetingsplaats.

Aangezien architectuur hand in hand gaat met ornamentiek is er op maat van het pand een geometrisch patroon ontworpen. Het is gebaseerd op wiskundige berekeningen zoals de gulden snede, een gelijkenis uit beide culturen. Het patroon fungeert als achterliggende basis voor de verschillende verdiepingen. Voor elk niveau wordt het op een andere manier geïnterpreteerd waardoor elk niveau een eigen identiteit krijgt. Toch is elk niveau een deel van een groter geheel.

Het project was een zoektocht om in een retail-omgeving een fusie van twee culturen te creëren. Door de onderzoeksresultaten te vertalen naar een ontwerp is deze fusie bereikt. Het toont dat balansen en gemeenschappelijke raakvlakken altijd gevonden kunnen worden. Met respect voor de geschiedenis van beide culturen is het platform een versmelting van sociale, culturele en economische aspecten, over en voor mensen.
