Defensieve en domestieke architectuur in Zuidoost-Arabië in de IJzertijd: een overzicht en een analyse

Wonen in de IJzertijd (1350-300 v.C.) in Zuidoost-Arabië

Tegenwoordig voeren energiezuinige woningen met een geschikt EPC-attest (energieprestatiecertificaat) en een gegarandeerde geringe ecologische voetafdruk de boventoon op de woningmarkt in Vlaanderen. Een ‘beetje’ huis beantwoordt daarbij aan bovenstaande idealen en de consument ziet dit het liefst verwezenlijkt worden met hoogwaardige natuurlijke materialen. Daarnaast zijn ook een gunstige inplanting, uitzicht en aanzicht al van even groot belang. Het leeuwendeel van die woningmarkt bestaat uit eengezinswoningen en singlesappartementen. Het spreekt echter voor zich dat deze normen eerder erg modern zijn en gedurende de oudheid of elders ter wereld helemaal niet van belang waren. De vraag is dan natuurlijk hoe er wél gebouwd en gewoond werd?

Centraal in deze scriptie staat de IJzertijdperiode (1350-300 v.C.) in Zuidoost-Arabië. Een woestijnregio die het huidige Sultanaat van Oman en de zeven Verenigde Arabische Emiraten beslaat. Lang werd verondersteld dat de bevolking gedurende deze periode een nomadisch bestaan leidde en dat hun woningen enkel bestonden uit hutjes in vergankelijk materiaal. Archeologische opgravingen sinds de jaren 1950’ nuanceren dit beeld enigszins. Niet alleen werden op alvast enkele plaatsen op dit schiereiland bescheiden tempels en woningen ontdekt, ook kwam een vernuftig waterbevoorradingssysteem aan het licht. Dit waterverdelingssysteem, de zogenaamde aflaj geheten, bestond uit ondergronds uitgegraven kanalen die water aftapten van watervoerende lagen aan de rand van het gebergte. De vondst van dit soort waterbevoorrading ontkracht een nomadisch bestaan. Permanente controle en onderhoud zijn immers noodzakelijk om zo’n systeem operationeel te houden.

Het onderzoek naar IJzertijdarchitectuur is uitgevoerd op drie niveaus. Eerst en vooral werd op een macroniveau gekeken waar archeologische sites gelokaliseerd zijn op het schiereiland. Over hoeveel nederzettingen gaat het? En zijn er belangrijke gemeenschappelijke kenmerken waar te nemen? Een tweede luik spitst zich toe op een morfologische analyse. Zijn er verschillende types van woningen te onderscheiden? En zo ja, over wat voor soort woningen gaat het hier? Wat zijn de belangrijkste verschillen? In een laatste luik staat een technische analyse centraal. Meer bepaald wordt er gepeild naar de gebruikte bouwmaterialen en de constructiemethoden.

Uit een geografische analyse blijken er zowel dorpen langs de kust aanwezig, als in het gebergte, alsook in het tussenliggende woestijngebied. Het meest opvallende is wellicht dat dorpen uit uitgestrekte clusters bestaan, waar compartimentering van bijvoorbeeld residentiële en industriële zones opvalt. Op het merendeel van de sites zijn bovendien restanten van erg intensief benutte dadelpalmplantages waar te nemen. Bijkomend paleobotanisch onderzoek toont aan dat deze plantages vaak al in 3000 v.C. in gebruik werden genomen. Of er sprake is van een zekere hiërarchie tussen de sites onderling is onduidelijk, maar dit is zeker niet uitgesloten.

De morfologische analyse toont aan dat dorpen in het gebergte uit versterkte vestingen bestaan waarrond of waarin werd gewoond. De huizen in het gebergte beschikken over een vrijstaande rechthoekige stenen fundering. Over de bovenbouw en indeling is nagenoeg niets gekend. In het woestijngebied betreft het hoofdzakelijk onverdedigde dorpen met een open aanzicht en vrijstaande woningen. Aan de kust zijn woonzones op te merken rond een bescheiden verdedigde dorpskern. In geheel Zuidoost-Arabië wordt er in de land- en tuinbouwzones gewoond in zogenaamde barasti’s. Dit zijn typische hutjes opgetrokken in dadelpalmhout, waarvan tegenwoordig nog etnografische parallellen aanwezig zijn op het Omaans schiereiland. In de woestijnvlakte domineren vrijstaande huizen uit ongebakken leemtegel het uitzicht. Deze hebben een vierkantig tot rechthoekig grondplan met binnenshuis een centrale open koer. Ze hebben enkel een gelijkvloerse verdieping. De bewoonbare oppervlakte van de huizen varieert enorm. De hutjes zijn eenkamerwoningen en lijken niet bedoeld voor permanent gebruik. De leemtegelwoningen bestaan uit twee types. Een eerste type beschikt over drie lange smalle kamers en lijkt gebruikt te zijn als eengezinswoning, een ander type beschikt over meerdere gescheiden compartimenten met telkens een aparte toegang, waardoor verondersteld wordt dat dit type woning door meerdere gezinnen of familieleden gedeeld werd. Eventueel speelde sociale status ook een rol in de grootte van de woningen. Dit is echter niet helemaal zeker.

Uit een technische analyse blijkt dat er doorgaans enkel met lokaal beschikbare grondstoffen gebouwd werd. In het gebergte werden woningen en forten overwegend in steen opgetrokken. In de woestijn werd grind en zand met water gebruikt om ongebakken leemtegels te vervaardigen, waarmee vervolgens gebouwd werd. Aan de kust werd een combinatie van deze twee gebruikt. steen, een weinig terracotta, hout en palmbladeren werden voor de afwerking gebruikt, zoals bedaking bijvoorbeeld. De nauwkeurig getrokken funderingen van de versterkingsmuren bewijzen dat de IJzertijdbevolking over een gedegen bouwkennis beschikte. Ook sporen van kleine ramen afgewerkt met een stenen omlijsting of houten balkjes in de leemtegelmuren illustreren hoe koeling binnenshuis verzekerd werd in een droog en heet klimaat. De barastihutten, waarvan de wanden opgebouwd zijn uit gevlochten dadelpalmbladeren en kreupelhout, worden vandaag nog met vochtige doeken uitgerust om zo een optimale ventilatie en natuurlijke airconditioning te garanderen. Het is niet enkel vanuit archeologisch oogpunt dat er onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd naar deze vroege woonvormen. Ook vanuit de moderne ‘groenere’ vernacular architecture wordt bestudeerd hoe men met natuurlijke materialen dichter bij de natuur bouwt, zonder in te boeten aan modern wooncomfort en toch een kleinere ecologische voetafdruk te realiseren. De studie naar woningen uit de oudheid biedt hierbij een belangrijk aanknopingspunt.
