Reshoring bij bedrijven in de Benelux: Een onderzoek naar de rol van innovatie

Zandhoven – Uit een onderzoek van een student Master Handelswetenschappen aan de KU Leuven blijkt dat reshoring met betrekking tot innovatie wel degelijk mogelijk is én dat het leidt tot succesverhalen in de Benelux. Daarnaast biedt reshoring een oplossing voor de maakindustrie, die de afgelopen jaren meer en meer verdwenen is als gevolg van offshoring.
OFFSHORING
Steeds meer verandert het gedrag van bedrijven als gevolg van de toenemende globalisering in onze maatschappij. Daarom maken bedrijven vaak gebruik van offshoring als overlevingsstrategie. Offshoring houdt in dat bedrijven processen gaan uitbesteden aan het buitenland en vindt meestal plaats tussen bedrijven van geïndustrialiseerde landen en minder ontwikkelde landen. Ook innovatie wordt meer en meer uitbesteed door middel van offshoring. Aangezien de Benelux een kenniseconomie is en dus zeer goed scoort op het vlak van innovatie, is dit iets om ons zorgen over te maken.
RESHORING
Ondanks de populariteit van offshoring evalueren meer en meer bedrijven hun offshoringpraktijken. Indien ze niet het gewenste resultaat opleveren, besluiten bedrijven om processen terug te halen naar het thuisland en is er sprake van reshoring. Reshoring wordt ondanks de succesverhalen nog altijd te weinig overwogen door bedrijven. De reden hiervan is dat bedrijven vaak niet durven om het risico te nemen om de stap te zetten. Bedrijven zoals Sylvania, Cappelle Pigments, Metes en IVC Group hebben immers bewezen dat reshoring werkt. Sylvania en IVC Group zijn er zelfs in geslaagd om tegen een lagere of dezelfde kostprijs een kwalitatief hoogstaander product te produceren. Dit kwam vooral door de nieuwe product- en productieontwikkelingen, die er vaak voor zorgen dat de loonkost nog slechts een klein percentage is van de totaalkost van het product.
INNOVATIE
In dit onderzoek werd onderzocht of de nadelen van offshoring en de voordelen van het thuisland met betrekking tot innovatie een invloed hebben op de intentie tot reshoring. Uit dit onderzoek bleek dat bedrijven verschillende redenen hebben om aan reshoring te doen, waarvan verschillende motieven te maken hebben met technologische innovatie.
Uit dit onderzoek kwam verder dat innovatie wel degelijk een belangrijke rol speelt bij de beslissing om bewust activiteiten naar de Benelux te halen of in de Benelux te houden. Om te achterhalen wat de rol van innovatie is bij reshoring in België, werd een online-enquête uitgevoerd en werden drie cases onderzocht. Hieruit bleek dat bedrijven vaak te maken krijgen met het verlies van intellectuele eigendomsrechten omwille van immitatie door concurrenten. Ook moeilijkheden bij het toepassen van innovatie in de offshoringlocatie, goedkopere productie- en producttechtnieken zorgden ervoor dat er minstens aan dezelfde kostprijs kan geproduceerd worden. Ook de link tussen productie en R&D werd in elk interview aangehaald. Indien deze twee entiteiten dichter bij elkaar liggen, kan er sneller geïnnoveerd worden. Dit is mede te wijten aan het feit dat tests sneller uitgevoerd kunnen worden en hierdoor een snellere reactie mogelijk is op fouten. Uit dit onderzoek kwam ook verder dat bedrijven die te maken kregen met problemen in verband met innovatie, ook vaker te maken kregen met problemen in verband met de supply chain, bescherming van intellectuele eigendom en communicatie.
Ook voor de maakindustrie in de Benelux kan reshoring een oplossing bieden, aangezien het fenomeen er toe bijdraagt dat productie in de Benelux blijft of naar de Benelux wordt gebracht. Dit heeft de Benelux nodig doordat de maakindustrie onder druk staat door offshoring. Onze economie is momenteel ook te veel gebaseerd op diensten. Dit is niet leefbaar op lange termijn. De boodschap is dus heel duidelijk. Er moet iets gebeuren in de Benelux en daarvoor is reshoring een oplossing. Dus alstublieft bedrijven, overweeg reshoring!
