‘TELEVISIEMAKER VOOR EEN DAG’. VISUEEL ETNOGRAFISCH ONDERZOEK NAAR TELEVISIEGEBRUIK EN IDENTITEIT VAN DIASPORAJONGEREN.

De Vlaamse diasporasamenleving zorgt ervoor dat er niet enkel aandacht is voor het televisiegebruik van autochtonen, maar ook voor dat van etnische minderheden. Vooral diasporajongeren bevinden zich in een moeilijke positie, aangezien ze tussen twee culturen balanceren. Ook in bestaand kwantitatief media-onderzoek wordt nadruk gelegd op het dichotome televisiegebruik van etnische minderheden.

In dit onderzoek stappen wij af van die dichotomie en trachten wij het televisiegedrag van diasporajongeren te onderzoeken zonder de individuele situatie van elke jongere uit het oog te verliezen. Daarom kiezen wij voor een kwalitatieve methode. We peilen aan de hand van visueel etnografisch onderzoek naar de zender- en programmavoorkeuren van diasporajongeren (14-22 jaar) van de eerste en de tweede generatie met verschillende etnische achtergronden. Op deze manier willen wij deze jongeren de kans geven om te reageren tegen de heersende mediabeelden en zien wij hen als volwaardige burgers die ook in staat zijn om mediacontent te produceren. Wij hebben niet enkel aandacht voor de etnische identiteit van onze respondenten maar ook voor de andere identiteitsassen zoals gender en leeftijd.

De onderzoeksresultaten tonen aan dat onze respondenten gebruik maken van nationale, globale en de zenders uit hun thuisland en dus niet uitsluitend van de media uit hun thuisland. In de inhoud van de televisieprogramma’s zijn de migrantengerelateerde thema’s dan ook zo goed als afwezig. De personages en deelnemers die zijn verwerkt door onze respondenten behoren tot verschillende etnische groepen waartussen wij vaak de etnische groep van de respondent in kwestie terugvonden. In de geproduceerde televisieprogramma’s komen vooral verschillende puberteitgerelateerde thema’s aan bod.

Besluitend kan worden gesteld dat de leefwereld van diasporajongeren niet mag worden gereduceerd tot hun religieuze of culturele praxis. Een diverse samenleving brengen op het scherm betekent dan ook niet dat er meer minderhedengerelateerde thema’s aan bod moeten komen maar vooral dat diasporajongeren moeten worden getoond binnen hun leefwereld die uit meer dan enkel hun etnische identiteit bestaat.
