Tussen Differentiatie en Homogenisering

 

Media erkennen de islamitische diversiteit niet

Niet alleen heeft (een deel van) onze samenleving problemen met het erkennen van diversiteit tussen verscheidene religies, ook de erkenning van diversiteit binnen één bepaalde religie blijkt problematisch.

Islam is geen eensgezind geloofssysteem en de moslims zijn geen homogene, onverdeelde gemeenschap. Dat blijkt onder andere (onrechtstreeks) uit talloze hedendaagse conflicten in de Arabische Wereld of ver daarbuiten. Hoewel artikels over die conflicten het leeuwendeel van onze nieuwsberichtgeving omvatten, hebben Vlaamse kranten nauwelijks oog voor diversiteit binnen de islamitische religie. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van Julie Snissaert, studente journalistiek aan de vakgroep Toegepaste Taalkunde van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Julie Snissaert doet onderzoek naar de representatie van islamitische substromingen in twee Vlaamse Kranten: Het Laatste Nieuws en De Standaard. Voor deze thesis werden in totaal 288 artikels geanalyseerd over de periode van één volledig jaar. Het onderzoek vindt plaats tegen de achtergrond van de Syrische burgeroorlog en het vertrek van Belgische Syriëstrijders naar het strijdtoneel. 

De literatuurstudie biedt een kijk op de belangrijkste islamitische substromingen, het conflict in Syrië en de motieven en profielen van Belgische Syriëstrijders. Julie analyseert in haar thesis hoe Het Laatste Nieuws en De Standaard berichten over islamitische substromingen, aan welke onderwerpen en regio’s ze gelinkt worden, en wie de pers aan het woord laat als het over substromingen gaat. 

Uit de resultaten blijkt dat beide kranten weinig aandacht besteden aan islamitische substromingen. Slechts een klein aantal artikels vermelden substromingen, en in de overgrote meerderheid van die gevallen worden de substromingen niet geduid. Voor Het Laatste Nieuws geldt zelfs dat substromingen het vaakst gelinkt worden met negatieve fenomenen als extremisme, fundamentalisme, geweld of terreur. De Standaard is daarin iets neutraler. De onderwerpen waaraan islamitische substromingen worden gelinkt zijn niet veel rooskleuriger. Nagenoeg allemaal worden ze in verband gebracht met conflicten of oorlogen in het Midden-Oosten. Salafisme daarentegen wordt het vaakst in verband gebracht met extremisme en terreurdreigingen in eigen land. Dit is een verontrustend resultaat volgens de studente. Zeker wanneer men nagaat dat bij Het Laatste Nieuws de journalist van het artikel veelal de meest voorkomende stem is bij het vermelden van een substroming. Ook in De Standaard is dat het geval voor het grootste deel van de substromingen. Enkel salafisme en soennisme worden respectievelijk het vaakst gebruikt door islamitische experts en Syrische oppositiebronnen. 

Het gebrek aan informatie en de negatieve verbanden die in deze thesis werden blootgelegd, zijn volgens de studente betreurenswaardig. De pers ondermijnt mede hierdoor de diversiteit binnen de islamitische religie. Als er al een onderscheid wordt gemaakt, focust men maar al te vaak op extreme of negatieve vormen van islam. De studente vermeldt dat dit niet alleen blijk geeft van homogeniserende tendensen, maar dat dit ook nefaste gevolgen zou kunnen hebben voor de percepties van islam in hoofde van de meerderheid van de bevolking. Dit effect kan het onderzoek onmogelijk bevestigen. Maar volgens de studente bestaat die kans wel.
