Beroemdheden in luxe-advertenties : de modererende impact van congruentie op de effectiviteit van multiple product endorsement

 “Meus, What Else?”

Shakira poetst haar tanden met Oral-B, Penelope Cruz drinkt al graag eens een Schweppes en George Clooney is verlekkerd op Nespresso. Dit fenomeen waarbij beroemdheden ingezet worden als vertegenwoordiger van een merk, wordt in de reclamewereld celebrity endorsement genoemd. Vaak blijkt dit een effectieve marketingtechniek en het succesverhaal met de vallende piano kan dit bevestigen. Maar hoe gedraagt dit fenomeen zich in een luxecontext? Of wat als George Clooney niet enkel en alleen verzot is op Nespresso, maar van tijd tot tijd ook eens een glaasje champagne van Moët & Chandon lust?

Beroemdheden worden vandaag de dag meer en meer ingezet als communicatiemiddel. Het prijskaartje dat hieraan vasthangt, kan echter vaak hoog oplopen. Vandaar komt het steeds meer voor dat één beroemdheid verdeeld wordt over meerdere merken, een fenomeen dat bekend staat als multiple product endorsement. Herinnert U zich nog wie er Martini vergat mee te brengen naar het feestje? En wie er gebruik maakt van zijn Omega om steeds overal op tijd te zijn? Juist, George Clooney.

De effectiviteit van celebrity endorsement werd reeds uitvoerig onderzocht. Echter wat multiple product endorsement betreft, blijft onderzoek eerder schaars; zeker wanneer het gaat om luxeproducten. Toch zijn er, naast George Clooney, tal van andere beroemdheden die gelinkt worden aan meerdere luxemerken. Denk maar aan Blake Lively die niet enkel in spots van Gucci te zien was, maar ook reeds reclame maakte voor Chanel.

Empirisch onderzoek

Om de invloed van het aantal luxemerken in een zogenaamd endorsement portfolio na te gaan, werden verschillende reclame advertenties opgesteld. Via een online vragenlijst werd gepeild naar de attitude tegenover de advertentie, de merkattitude en de aankoopintentie. Stel, U ziet binnenkort Jeroen Meus verschijnen in een reclame spot van KitchenAid. De kans is groot dat U dit als heel normaal beschouwt en zelfs overweegt om in de toekomst dit merk aan te kopen. Immers als hij dit gebruikt, zal het wel uitstekend materiaal zijn. Maar stel dat U even later Jeroen Meus ziet opduiken in een reclamecampagne van bijvoorbeeld Peugeot kookgerei. Gaat dit uw mening tegenover KitchenAid beïnvloeden?

Naast het aantal merken werd ook het effect van congruentie onderzocht. Overeenkomst tussen kenmerken van het merk en kenmerken van de beroemdheid is immers van groot belang bij celebrity endorsement. Hoe zou U bijvoorbeeld reageren wanneer Jeroen Meus niet voor kookgerei maar voor de vulpennen van Parker of MontBlanc reclame zou maken?

Resultaten

Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat, ondanks het exclusieve karakter van luxemerken, multiple product endorsement de betere resultaten oplevert. Het feit dat een beroemdheid reeds andere luxemerken promoot, lijkt een versterkend effect te hebben. Daarnaast kunnen we besluiten dat incongruentie ervoor zorgt dat het luxemerk toch opvalt binnen een portfolio. Gezien het meestal nogal extraordinair karakter van een luxemerk, zorgt dit voor positievere resultaten dan congruentie. In de context van het onderzoek kunnen we stellen dat de vreemde combinatie van Jeroen Meus en vulpennen ervoor zorgt dat de reclame in het oog springt. De ‘normale’ combinatie met het kookgerei gaat sneller aan de consument voorbij.  Wanneer toch gekozen wordt voor een exclusieve beroemdheid is overeenkomst tussen hem/haar en het merk inderdaad van groot belang en levert congruentie de betere resultaten op.

Twee opmerkingen vullen deze resultaten aan. Ten eerste zal U zich misschien afvragen wat kookgerei en vulpennen met luxe te maken hebben. Doch worden de gebruikte merken door de consument aanzien als exclusievere merken. Gelet op goedkopere alternatieven, zou niet iedereen een mixer van KitchenAid aanschaffen of schrijven met een vulpen van MontBlanc. Een bic schrijft toch ook, niet waar?

Ten tweede hebben de bovenstaande resultaten enkel betrekking op de attitude tegenover de advertentie. Gezien de tijd en het budget werd in dit onderzoek enkel gewerkt met advertenties die de consument slechts eenmaal te zien kreeg. Er bestaan echter, naast print advertising, tal van andere manieren om een merk te promoten. Manieren die op verloop van tijd misschien wel de aankoopintentie en merkattitude kunnen beïnvloeden.

(Extra)ordinariteit

Als adverteerder is het dus van belang om met de juiste celebrity over te brengen wat men als merk wenst over te brengen. En ondanks dat beroemdheden en luxe hand in hand gaan, moet men toch rekening houden met enkele factoren. Uit dit onderzoek moeten we vooral onthouden dat het belangrijk is dat de reclame opvalt en dat het vertegenwoordigen van meerdere luxemerken een versterkend effect oplevert. Dus niet alleen de mate van overeenkomst tussen een beroemdheid en luxemerk is van belang; ook de overeenkomst binnenin een portfolio is belangrijk bij celebrity endorsement. Jeroen Meus mag nog zo lekker koken, al dan niet met het kookgerei van KitchenAid; het feit dat hij zijn recepten zou neerschrijven met de vulpennen van Parker of MontBlanc gaat minder snel aan de consument voorbij. Luxemerken verkopen  “the ordinary of extraordinary people, and the extraordinary of ordinary people” en deze eerder vreemde combinatie brengt dit ook zo over naar de consument.
