ANTWERPEN – Onderzoek wijst uit dat de kloof in kwaliteit van Nederlandse en Indiase instituties een grote invloed heeft op de investeringsbereidheid. Indiase ondernemingen zien Nederland als gastvrij land met bijzonder goede instituties. Ook de goede overheidsbegeleiding is een motivatie voor Indiase bedrijven om een Nederlandse vestiging te openen.

Binnen Europa is Nederland de ontvanger van de meeste investeringen vanuit India. Volgens ondervraagde ondernemingen komt dit met name door de kwaliteit van de Nederlandse infrastructuur, het opleidingsniveau (met name talenkennis) en de efficiëntie van overheidsorganen.

Naast instituties blijken ook de markten een reden te zijn om in Nederland te investeren. Europa is een grote afzetmarkt voor tal van industrieën. De geografisch gunstige ligging van Nederland maakt het eenvoudig voor Indiase bedrijven deze markten te bedienen. Logistieke schakels als Schiphol en de haven van Rotterdam zijn hierbij van strategisch belang.

Het onderzoek heeft ook geleid tot een aanvulling op wellicht de meest invloedrijke theorie omtrent de verklaring van buitenlandse investeringsstromen. De Eclectic Theory dient volgens de onderzoeker aangevuld te worden met instituties als motief voor het zakendoen met een ander land. Nooit eerder is deze theorie dusdanig aangepast.

Nog nooit is er onderzoek gedaan naar institutionele tekortkomingen in India als drijfveer voor haar buitenlandse directe investeringen naar Nederland. Het onderzoek werd uitgevoerd door een Masterstudente Handelswetenschappen aan de KU Leuven. De gegevens werden verzameld via diepte-interviews met Indiase bedrijven die in Nederland zijn gevestigd. In deze diepte-interviews werd getoetst in hoeverre de motieven van Dunning en instituties van invloed zijn geweest op de beslissing om in Nederland te investeren.
