Het gebruik van pictogrammen tijdens de zwangerschap - Taalbarrière doorbroken

Zwangerschapsopvolging bij anderstaligen: taalbarrière doorbreken

België ontvangt jaarlijks heel wat immigranten. Zo zijn er in 2011, 138.071 nieuwe immigranten naar ons land gekomen. Deze personen hebben allemaal recht op kwaliteitsvolle medische zorg. Er is echter een probleem. Wat als de patiënt de gegeven medische informatie niet of onvolledig  begrijpt?

Slechte communicatie binnen de gezondheidszorg
Een slechte communicatie tussen de zorgverstrekker en zorgbehoevende kan leiden tot een verminderde kwaliteit van de zorg. Eén van de mogelijke oorzaken kan een taalbarrière zijn. Door de toenemende migratie in Vlaanderen is de taalbarrière een frequent voorkomend probleem. Eén van de momenten waarin dit het meest naar voor komt is tijdens het geven van gezondheidsvoorlichting (GVO).

Zwangerschapsopvolging
Tijdens de prenatale periode krijgen toekomstige ouders vaak een berg aan informatie te verwerken. De vroedvrouw speelt hierin een belangrijke rol. Tijdens de opvolging van de zwangerschap wordt deze taak van de vroedvrouw bemoeilijkt als het een anderstalige toekomstige mama betreft.

De zwangere allochtone bevolking in België is door het niet - of gedeeltelijk - begrijpen van de GVO een kwetsbare groep. Extra ondersteuning voor hen is een must.

Oplossing
Er zijn verscheidene oplossingen met voor- en nadelen. Onder andere een tolk kan in vele gevallen een goede ondersteuning bieden bij belangrijke gesprekken. Op een tolk beroep doen is echter niet praktisch bij een langdurige opvolging zoals de opvolging van een zwangerschap. Een tekst in de eigen taal, zoals een brochure of visuele ondersteuning in een gesprek, kan helpen.

Studie toont aan dat een visuele ondersteuning door middel van pictogrammen ervoor kan zorgen dat de communicatie universeler wordt en dat de informatie gemakkelijker te onthouden is.

Pictogrammen
Daar pictogrammen de communicatie met anderstaligen aanzienlijk kan verbeteren, werd er een groot aantal nieuwe pictogrammen ontwikkeld. Deze zouden zowel door vroedvrouwen kunnen gebruikt worden als door de toekomstige ouders. De vroedvrouw kan deze gebruiken ter ondersteuning van een consultatie. De mama kan deze thuis gebruiken als geheugensteuntje.

Medium
Ideaal zou zijn om een medium te hanteren dat zowel geschikt is voor de vroedvrouw die bij een zwangerschapsopvolging GVO geeft, als voor de anderstalige mama thuis. Een APP biedt hier de ideale oplossing.

Een prototype van deze APP werd geboren en kreeg de naam PREPP. In PREPP is er een wijde waaier van pictogrammen opgenomen. Bij elk pictogram is de GVO dat erbij hoort te lezen in verschillende talen, zodat de zwangere immigrant de informatie in haar eigen taal kan opzoeken. Op deze manier kan er ook thuis geen misverstand ontstaan over de betekenis van de pictogrammen. Momenteel is de GVO in PREPP in het Nederlands, Frans, Engels, Russisch, Arabisch, Turks en Portugees te lezen. In de toekomst worden deze talen hopelijk zodanig uitgebreid dat de hele top tien van moedertalen van Belgische immigranten gehanteerd kunnen worden. Ook al is het heel handig dat de pictogrammen ook thuis geconsulteerd kunnen worden, deze APP is in geen geval een vervanging van een verloskundige consultatie. Zwangere vrouwen moeten nog steeds langs gaan bij hun vroedvrouw en gynaecoloog.

Eens dat PREPP getest en gelanceerd wordt op de arbeidsmarkt, kan deze APP voor iedere vroedvrouw een nieuw instrument betekenen tijdens het geven van GVO. Het kan het professioneel handelen van de vroedvrouw in het algemeen verhogen, zeker naar anderstaligen toe.

De pictogrammen dienen als visuele ondersteuning voor een GVO sessie tijdens de prenatale periode of als leidraad voor de toekomstige ouders om zich een GVO gesprek te herinneren en op deze manier een zo gezond mogelijke zwangerschap tegemoet te gaan. Want zoals Ralph Waldo Emerson, een Amerikaans redevoerder, docent en dichter, ooit zei: “The  first wealth is health”.
