Landschap en logistiek tijdens de Joodse Oorlog (66-74)
In april 2014 claimde de Syrische president Bashar al-Assad aan de winnende hand te zijn in de Syrische Burgeroorlog, nadat zijn troepen erin geslaagd waren vitale bevoorradingslijnen van de rebellen af te sluiten. Hoewel we ondertussen allemaal weten dat deze aankondiging voorbarig was, speelt de mogelijkheid om een leger te kunnen voorzien van levensmiddelen inderdaad een cruciale rol in oorlogen nu en vroeger. Zo ook in de Joodse Oorlog van 66-74, één van de opmerkelijkste oorlogen in de klassieke periode…
Bevoorrading: een cruciaal element in oorlogsvoering
Elke mens moet dagelijks anderhalve liter water drinken en voldoende eten om optimaal te kunnen functioneren. Dit is een wijsheid waarmee we allemaal bekend zijn sinds de kleuterschool. Maar weinig mensen staan erbij stil dat ook soldaten die ten oorlog trekken elke dag opnieuw voldoende voedsel en drank moeten opnemen om gevechtsklaar te blijven. Vaak denken we bij oorlogsvoering aan gesofisticeerde wapens en strategische plannen, maar niet aan hoe soldaten aan hun dagelijkse water en brood komen. Het mag banaal klinken, maar soldaten zijn geen fictieve personages die functioneren zonder dat ze moeten voldoen aan alle basisbehoeften waaraan elk van ons moet voldoen. Ervoor zorgen dat een leger elke dag opnieuw voldoende voedsel, water, brandstof en bouwmateriaal heeft, is bijgevolg een cruciale taak voor elke generaal die een campagne tot een goed eind wil brengen.
Deze taak is echter alles behalve gemakkelijk. Niet alleen is het bijzonder uitdagend om de enorme hoeveelheden voedsel en water voor grote legers te verzamelen en te vervoeren; ook ligt de tegenstrever steeds op de loer om de bevoorrading van zijn vijand te verstoren. Het uithongeren van je opponent is immers een optimale manier om hem te verzwakken. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat vele generaals de bevoorrading van dagdagelijkse noodzakelijkheden centraal geplaatst hebben in hun tactische plannen.
Het verloop van de Joodse oorlog landschappelijk en logistiek geanalyseerd
Ook in de Klassieke Oudheid besefte men al dat een tegenstander niet enkel door middel van bloedige confrontaties, maar ook door middel van uithongering kon worden verslagen. Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan is een citaat van de vierde-eeuwse Romeinse auteur Vegetius: “Want vaker wordt een leger vernietigd door gebrek aan levensmiddelen dan door een gevecht en honger is wreder dan het zwaard”.
Tijdens de Joodse Oorlog, een conflict tussen de Romeinse autoriteiten in Palestina en de Joodse bewoners van dat gebied, speelde de bevoorrading van de soldaten een heel pertinente rol in de tactiek van de strijdende partijen. Hoe, waar en wanneer de strijdende partijen aan levensmiddelen konden geraken, speelde een cruciale rol in hoe deze oorlog verliep. Het onderzoek dat ik heb ondernomen, focust dan ook op hoe landschap en logistiek een invloed hadden op het verloop van dit militaire gebeuren. Betreffende het landschap werd gekeken naar de aanwezigheid van voedsel, voer, water en hout in de ruimte, maar ook in de tijd. Het was zowel van belang te kijken waar deze noodzakelijkheden voor het leger aan- of afwezig waren als om te kijken wanneer tijdens het jaar men over deze zaken kon beschikken. Generaals moesten er in hun strategie immers rekening mee houden dat niet alleen sommige plaatsen beter of minder geschikt waren om te gebruiken als slagveld, maar dat ook sommige periodes van het jaar in meer of mindere mate problemen konden geven voor de bevoorrading. Zo waren de natte winters in Palestina bijvoorbeeld een probleem omdat het vele regenwater de onverharde wegen deed wegspoelen. Ook logistiek moest worden bekeken omdat inzicht in hoe de Romeinen hun voedselbevoorrading regelden van belang was om te analyseren waar en wanneer ze welke logistieke keuzes wel of niet konden maken.
De rol van bevoorrading in het verloop van de Joodse Oorlog
De kernstelling van het onderzoek is dat het verloop van de Joodse Oorlog, dat soms wat merkwaardig overkomt, begrijpelijker wordt wanneer je rekening houdt met de landschappelijke en logistieke situatie waarin het conflict zich afspeelde. Door te bekijken waar, wanneer en hoe soldaten aan voldoende levensmiddelen konden komen, krijg je meer inzicht in situaties die op het eerste zicht vreemd en onlogisch lijken. Om dit meer concreet te maken, kunnen we naar volgend voorbeeld kijken: in 67 stuurde Vespasianus, de Romeinse opperbevelhebber, zijn soldaten al begin juli naar de winterkampen! Op het eerste zicht is dit een paradoxale beslissing. Deze wordt echter begrijpelijk wanneer we rekening houden met de landschappelijke realiteit in Palestina en de noodzaak om het leger te bevoorraden. In de zomer waren de gewassen in Palestina ofwel reeds geoogst ofwel verdord en viel er zo goed als geen druppel regen. Het zou voor de Romeinen dan ook zeer moeilijk geweest zijn om in de zomer te overleven op het slagveld, laat staan strijd te leveren.
De Romeinen hielden ook rekening met hoe de Joden in Jeruzalem, het brandpunt van de opstand, aan hun levensmiddelen moesten komen. Vespasianus besefte dat Jeruzalem enkel kon worden ingenomen wanneer de rebellen in deze stad zouden worden afgesloten van hun voedselbronnen en op die manier verzwakt. Zijn tactiek was er bijgevolg op gericht om eerst al het gebied rond de Heilige Stad der Joden onder controle te krijgen en zo Jeruzalem uit te hongeren. Daarna pas, wanneer de uithongering haar werk had gedaan, trok zijn leger ten strijde tegen Jeruzalem. Dat de stad relatief gezien zeer snel veroverd werd, was een gevolg van Vespasianus’ aandacht voor de rol die bevoorrading speelt in een oorlog.
Oorlog voeren is dus een gegeven dat niet losstaat van de alomtegenwoordige nood voor mensen om zich te voeden. Militaire conflicten zijn niet te begrijpen wanneer we enkel focussen op de combattieve en de strategische component. Het verloop van de Joodse Oorlog laat duidelijk zien dat we rekening moeten houden met hoe soldaten aan voedsel en water kwamen (en komen) om te begrijpen waarom een conflict verliep zoals het verliep. Dit levert ons interessante inzichten op die ons kunnen helpen om conflicten vroeger en nu beter te begrijpen en hun uitkomst accurater te voorspellen.
