The relation between biodiversity and biogeochemical functioning in Arctic deep sea sediments

U heeft beslist al gehoord van klimaatverandering! Maar heeft u al gehoord van de effecten ervan op onze wereld en meer specifiek op de polaire gebieden? Zoals u wel weet, is ook de Noordpool niet vrijgesteld van de gevolgen van klimaatopwarming. Maar wat zijn deze gevolgen voor de Noordpool precies en wat kunnen we in de verdere toekomst verwachten?

Klimaatverandering is de dag van vandaag nog nooit zo actueel. Iedereen heeft gehoord dat we in België nattere winters en warmere zomers zullen krijgen. Dit past in het globale plaatje, waarin gebieden met veel regen nog natter zullen worden en gebieden met weinig regen nog droger zullen staan,maar ook waarin de polaire ijskappen zullen smelten met een globale zeespiegelstijging als resultaat. Echter, zeespiegelstijging zal niet het enige gevolg zijn van een veranderend polair systeem. De Noordpool is namelijk essentieel in de manier waarop alles op aarde functioneert en daardoor ook het globale klimaat. Daarom is het belangrijk dat we begrijpen hoe de Noordpool in al zijn aspecten zal reageren op de klimaatopwarming!

Deze studie werd uitgevoerd in Fram Straat, een deel van het Noordpoolgebied gelegen tussen Groenland en Spitsbergen, dat de belangrijkste doorgang tussen de Noordelijke IJszee en de Atlantische Oceaan vormt. Het oostelijke deel van de Straat wordt gedurende de zomer ijsvrij gehouden door het noordwaarts vloeiende warme Atlantische water. Het westelijke gedeelte daarentegen wordt afgekoeld door het transport van koud Arctisch water naar het zuiden en is bijgevolg het hele jaar door bedekt met zee-ijs. Gedurende deze studie werd dan ook het effect van ijsbedekking en waterdiepte op het leven op de zeebodem geanalyseerd. De staalname gebeurde in Juni 2014 over verschillende waterdieptes in zowel het ijsbedekte gebied als aan de ijsrand.

Er wordt verwacht dat het Noordpoolgebied, ook wel het Arctische gebied genaamd, met 2 tot 9°C zal opwarmen tegen 2100. Uit eerder onderzoek blijkt dat deze opwarming als gevolg zal hebben dat de primaire producenten[1] van de oceaan kleiner zullen worden. Hierdoor zal er minder voedsel voor de consumenten[2], zowel in de waterkolom (het vloeibare zeewater) als op de zeebodem, worden geproduceerd. Het verwachte effect hiervan is dat het gewicht aan organismen (biomassa) die leven op of nabij de zeebodem, zal dalen. Bovendien is het gedeelte van het voedsel dat de zeebodem zal bereiken ook sterk afhankelijk van de ijsbedekking, met een verhoogde export in de nabijheid van de rand van het zee-ijs. Dit komt doordat de primaire productie zich als algenbloei zal accumuleren langs de rand van het zee-ijs, waar de lichtintensiteit hoog genoeg is en de nutriënt concentraties (voornamelijk stikstof, fosfor en kiezelzuur) hoog genoeg zijn. Maar wat het effect op de zeebodem nu echt zal zijn is nog steeds grotendeels ongekend.

Uit de resultaten van deze studie bleek, zoals verwacht, dat er op de zeebodem minder voedsel voorhanden was in de ijsbedekte gebieden in vergelijking met de gebieden aan de ijsrand. Bovendien daalde de hoeveelheid voedsel die de zeebodem bereikte naarmate de waterdiepte toenam. Dit laatste is logisch aangezien het voedsel langere tijd onderweg is eer het de zeebodem bereikt en hierdoor langer zal kunnen worden geconsumeerd en gedegradeerd in de waterkolom. Deze trend in beschikbaar voedsel werd gevolgd door de densiteit aan meiofauna (dieren met een grootte tussen 32 en 500 μm), met lagere densiteiten in de ijsbedekte gebieden en op grotere waterdieptes. De macrofauna biomassa (gewicht aan dieren met een grootte tussen 500 μm en 4 mm)daarentegen bleek enkel te dalen met grotere waterdieptes. Bovendien bleek ook de macrofauna gemeenschap (de samenstelling) verschillend te zijn tussen beide gebieden. Zowel de meio- als macrofauna gemeenschap bleek te verschillen naargelang de waterdiepte. Tot slot bleek ook de activiteit van de organismen lager te zijn in de ijsbedekte gebieden als gevolg van het lagere gehalte aan voedsel.

Sterke conclusies trekken uit deze studie zou voorbarig zijn, al geeft het wel een indicatie dat de polaire systemen zullen veranderen naarmate de aarde blijft opwarmen en het ijs blijft smelten. De resultaten tonen aan dat naargelang de ijsrand zal opschuiven, de algenbloei zal volgen, waardoor de verhoogde meiofauna densiteit en activiteit ook mee zal opschuiven. Echter wanneer het zee-ijs volledig zal zijn afgesmolten, zou het kunnen dat deze algenbloei niet meer zal ontstaan en er bijgevolg geen verhoogde densiteit en activiteit zal voorkomen op de Arctische zeebodem. Bovendien zullen de gemeenschappen enkel nog verschillen naargelang de waterdiepte en niet meer naargelang het gebied, waardoor de biodiversiteit in zijn geheel zou kunnen dalen. Wat wel met zekerheid geconcludeerd kan worden is dat verder onderzoek in de polaire gebieden essentieel is. Willen we begrijpen hoe de wereld en het klimaat functioneert, wat de rol van de poolgebieden is en wat de effecten van klimaatverandering zullen zijn, is onderzoek naar de polaire gebieden in al zijn facetten onontbeerlijk. En zeg nu zelf, wie is er niet gefascineerd door de poolgebieden?!

[1] Primaire producenten: alle organismen die zelf hun voedsel maken en de basis van de voedselketen vormen, deze groep van organismen wordt het fytoplankton genoemd, waartoe de algen en bacteriën behoren. Vergelijk met de planten op het land.
