Cloud adoption by SMEs: linking service desires to technological reality through mindfulness

Eeuwenoude theorieën leren KMOs innoveren met de cloud

Het verschil tussen de werkwijze van een schoenmaker en een kleermaker dat de econoom David Ricardo in 1817 gebruikte om zijn Theory of Comparative Advantage te ontwikkelen, is heden ten dage nog door middel van Boeddhistische methoden toe te passen op (technologie)bedrijven om hen aan te sporen om te innoveren met de cloud. Handelsingenieur Margo Alofs (Universiteit Hasselt) kwam tot deze conclusie in haar masterthesis door de bedrijfsmodellen van met name KMOs te koppelen aan de opportuniteiten die cloud technologie hun biedt.

 

De belangstelling voor cloud-oplossingen wordt steeds groter. Dit is niet verwonderlijk als Europa aangeeft dat door een snelle adoptie van de cloud, er potentieel in de EU de komende 5 jaar tienduizenden nieuwe KMOs en tussen de 300.000 en 1,5 miljoen nieuwe banen kunnen ontstaan.

 

Kenmerkend voor de cloud is dat IT hier als pay-per-use wordt afgenomen en via het netwerk overal toegankelijk is gemaakt. Er wordt daarbij gebruikt gemaakt van internetstandaarden waardoor de dienst vanaf elk apparaat met internettoegang te gebruiken is.

 

Miljoenen mensen gebruiken bijna dagelijks software-as-a-service-diensten voor privé gebruik, denk aan Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter. Echter, de overstap naar diensten uit de cloud voor veel bedrijven lijkt nog een brug te ver. De uitdagingen hebben voornamelijk betrekking op veiligheid, juridische en privacy zaken. Daarnaast is er binnen de bedrijven vaak nog te weinig kennis aanwezig over de specifieke toepasbaarheid van cloud-technologieën en wordt er daarom soms onterecht wat sceptisch naar de cloud-markt gekeken.

 

Dit laatste aspect spoorde Alofs aan om na te gaan hoe deze scepsis kon worden weggenomen. “Het is van belang dat alle betrokkenen in het bedrijf meedenken over hoe de cloud in hun specifieke activiteiten kan worden geïntegreerd”. Hierbij moet niet worden gekeken naar hoe andere bedrijven het doen, maar moet worden uitgegaan van de eigen kracht en opportuniteiten die de cloud hen biedt. Kleine bedrijven kunnen niet op dezelfde manier voordeel halen uit de cloud als hun grotere broers. Door enkel het kostenvoordeel te benadrukken, is cloud-technologie een strategische keuze die operationele consequenties heeft. Voor kleine bedrijven is dit eerder andersom.

 

Kleine bedrijven zijn er het meest bij gebaat als de cloud-technologie hen in staat stelt om zich te onderscheiden van hun concurrenten door in hun bedrijfsprocessen agility in te bouwen. Zodoende zijn zij wendbaar en kunnen zij innovatieve producten en processen ontwikkelen en deze snel tot bij de consument brengen. Dit onderscheidend vermogen, of heterogeniteit, is het principe dat Ricardo in 1817 gebruikte om aan te tonen dat bedrijven een duurzaam competitief voordeel kunnen behalen door zaken net iets anders aan te pakken dan anderen.

 

Onderscheiden. Is dat niet makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan? “Natuurlijk is hier binnen de bedrijven reeds veel aandacht voor, maar er wordt nog te veel teruggevallen op standaardpraktijken.” Alofs keek voor de theoretische onderbouwing van haar conceptualiseringen over de grenzen van de economische en innovatie theorieën. Zo stuitte zij op ‘mindfulness’, de intellectuele tak van een theorie met haar wortels in de Boeddhistische psychologie.

 

Bedrijven die mindfulness in hun besluitvormingsproces toepassen, kunnen eerder unieke opportuniteiten te baat brengen door meer open te staan voor incidenteel voorbijkomende kansen, deze te evalueren op basis van hun specifieke omstandigheden en de nieuwe observaties te verwerken in hun bedrijfsmodel. Als iedereen binnen de organisatie wordt betrokken bij dit proces, zullen veranderingen in de omgeving eerder wordt waargenomen, en is de hele organisatie gemotiveerd om de eigen activiteiten aan te passen om hierop te kunnen inspelen. Daarom is er een grotere kans dat deze bedrijven creatiever zijn en eerder geneigd zijn om een nieuwe manier van werken te aanvaarden en zich zodoende te onderscheiden.

 

De handelsingenieur heeft in haar masterproef technologie weten te koppelen aan bedrijfsstrategie. Hiertoe heeft zij een framework ontwikkeld dat bedrijven kunnen aanwenden om vanuit hun eigenheid te komen tot de invulling van hun behoeftes voor de overstap naar de cloud. Dit framework is dus zeer bruikbaar voor managers die voor hun bedrijf moeten beslissen of, wanneer en in welke mate zij moeten migreren naar de cloud. Bijkomend gevolg van het framework is dat het kan worden aangewend om te innoveren met de cloud. Twee eeuwen na dato blijken de inzichten van Ricardo nog altijd zo scherp dat kan worden geconcludeerd dat denken vanuit verschillende invalshoeken ruimte biedt voor creativiteit. Zodoende voeden de inzichten van het framework innovatie en transformatie van organisaties, en uiteindelijk de economische groei.
