Het effect van overnames op skill upgrading

In dit exploratief onderzoek wordt nagegaan of er een wijziging is in het scholingsniveau bij werknemers in targetbedrijven na een overname, aangezien hier in de literatuur geen eenduidig besluit over bestaat. De onderzoeksvraag die hierbij geschikt is, luidt als volgt: "Wat is het effect van overnames op skill upgrading bij Belgische targetbedrijven?" Onder skill upgrading wordt begrepen dat er een stijging is in het aandeel van de hoger geschoolde werknemers of een daling in het aandeel lager geschoolde werknemers. Om deze onderzoeksvraag te kunnen beantwoorden wordt gebruikgemaakt van zes scholingscategorieën, namelijk laaggeschoolde en secundair geschoolde werknemers, die ook eens worden samengenomen tot lager geschoolde werknemers. Ook hooggeschoolde en universitair geschoolde werknemers worden opgenomen in het onderzoek en worden vervolgens eens samen genomen tot hoger geschoolde werknemers. Daarnaast wordt in het onderzoek ook onderscheid gemaakt tussen Belgische overnemers en buitenlandse overnemers. Aan de hand van panel data en de bijhorende regressie-analyse worden de volgende resultaten bekomen: Na een overname zijn er minder laaggeschoolde werknemers te zien in Belgische targetbedrijven en meer secundair en universitair geschoolde werknemers. Dit wijst op een zeer subtiel skill upgradend effect na overnames van Belgische targetbedrijven, ondanks het feit dat er in vele modellen sterke invloeden aanwezig zijn van tijdsspecifieke effecten. Dit nadeel wijdt het onderzoek aan het feit dat er geen controlegroep aanwezig is in de dataset, wat meteen de grootste beperking vormt in het onderzoek. Tot slot wijst het onderzoek in grote lijnen op een sterker skill upgradend effect in Belgische overnames dan in buitenlandse overnames, hoewel dit besluit niet eenduidig is. Hieruit volgt dat dit exploratief onderzoek een goede basis vormt voor toekomstig onderzoek, maar dat er zeker nog ruimte is voor verbetering waardoor vermoedelijk een meer eenduidig besluit zal kunnen gevormd worden.
