Wanneer men de huidige generatie jongvolwassenen vraagt om hun ideale seksscène te beschrijven, schetsen ze vaak een beeld waarin een onderdanige vrouw zich overgeeft aan de -vaak agressieve- grillen van een dominante man. Deze denkbeelden hebben ze echter niet opgedaan in de biologieles op school. Pornografie blijkt hun grootste inspiratiebron te zijn. Wat ze vaak niet beseffen is dat de handelingen die op het scherm gekreun opleveren niet per se overeenkomen met hoe een gezonde seksuele relatie er in realiteit uitziet…

Adults only, of toch niet?

Adults only”, stond er vroeger te lezen boven het gordijn in de videotheek, dat dienst deed als scheidingswand tussen de ruimte met familiefilms en het achterkamertje waarin pornografie werd ontleend aan klanten die zo min mogelijk probeerden op te vallen.

De anonimiteit die een pet en een kaptrui destijds boden kan vandaag worden teruggevonden op het internet. In de huidige gedigitaliseerde maatschappij is elke seksuele fantasie slechts een muisklik verwijderd, en niet alleen voor volwassenen. Jongeren krijgen op steeds vroegere leeftijd te maken met mediatechnologie, en dus ook met de seksuele inhoud die daar onlosmakelijk mee samenhangt. Op het moment dat u dit artikel leest, kijken er wereldwijd 30 miljoen mensen naar pornografie.

Verandering van spijs doet eten

Pornografie is media-inhoud waarin expliciet seksuele handelingen worden afgebeeld, met de bedoeling om opwinding op te wekken bij de kijkers. Deze inhoud is doorheen de jaren steeds agressiever geworden. Desensitisatie, oftewel de gewenning aan prikkels waaraan men herhaaldelijk wordt blootgesteld, vereist immers een continue innovatie naar extremer materiaal om dezelfde opwinding van weleer te bekomen. Maar liefst 88% van de hedendaagse pornografie bevat fysiek geweld tegenover vrouwen, die er bovendien in 95% van de gevallen van lijken te genieten.

Deze evolutie intrigeerde onderzoekers, die veronderstelden dat blootstelling aan zulke media-inhoud gepaard zou gaan met nefaste attitude- en gedragsveranderingen bij de kijkers. In dit onderzoek werd nagegaan of Vlaamse jongvolwassenen die vaker naar pornografie kijken er meer agressieve seksuele overtuigingen op nahouden dan zij die dit minder vaak doen. Dit werd getest bij 460 deelnemers, waarbij rekening werd gehouden met relevante eigenschappen van hun persoonlijkheid, alsook van de pornografie die ze prefereerden.

Waar rook is, is vuur

Uit de verwerking van de resultaten bleek dat bij de gemiddelde Vlaamse jongvolwassene het bekijken van pornografie inderdaad gepaard gaat met meer agressieve seksuele opvattingen. Meer concreet werd aangetoond dat hoe vaker men pornografie bekijkt, hoe meer men vindt dat de man seksueel dominant hoort te zijn, dat vrouwen ervan genieten om seksueel gedomineerd te worden, dat mannen seks mogen afdwingen van vrouwen die met hen flirten, dat vrouwen het vaak niet menen wanneer ze seks weigeren, en dat de man zijn seksuele avances niet moet staken als de vrouw hem afwijst.

En waar rook is, is vuur. Voorgaande studies hebben immers aangetoond dat deze vertekende opvattingen samenhangen met zorgwekkend seksueel gedrag.  Hierin schuilt de kracht van dit onderzoek: het slaagt erin om het bekijken van pornografie indirect te koppelen aan agressief seksueel gedrag, zonder de deelnemers af te schrikken door er vlakaf naar te vragen.

De overtuiging  dat mannen seksueel dominant horen te zijn en dat vrouwen hier bovendien van genieten kan ervoor zorgen dat de man alle macht krijgt tijdens seksuele situaties. Hij mag bijvoorbeeld beslissen welke handelingen er worden gesteld, en of er al dan niet voorbehoedsmiddelen worden gebruikt. Mensen met zulke opvattingen blijken vaker verwikkeld te zijn in ongezonde relaties met scheve machtsverhoudingen en partnergeweld, en staan toleranter tegenover seksuele agressie binnen en buiten de relatie.

Personen die van mening zijn dat mannen seks mogen afdwingen van flirtende vrouwen voelen minder empathie met de slachtoffers en meer empathie met de daders van verkrachting. Ze zijn geneigd te geloven dat de slachtoffers waarschijnlijk “hun verdiende loon” krijgen, omwille van hun uitdagende gedrag of kledij. Mannen die meer geloven in deze overtuiging blijken meer bereid te zijn om seks af te dwingen van een vrouw die hier niet mee instemt. Vrouwen met deze opvatting gaan zelf ook sneller toegeven aan ongewenste seks, aangezien ze makkelijker geloven dat hun “flirterig” gedrag dit heeft uitgelokt. Dit schuldgevoel kan ervoor zorgen dat ze nadien geen aangifte gaan doen of hulp gaan zoeken om het fysieke en mentale trauma te verwerken.

Wie gelooft dat vrouwen het vaak niet menen als ze seks weigeren, en dat mannen hun avances dus niet moeten staken als vrouwen hen afwijzen, gaat seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag minder snel herkennen. Mensen die meer geloven in deze overtuigingen hebben vaak pas door dat de seksuele handelingen echt niet gewenst zijn als de vrouw zich fysiek verzet. Een verbale weigering wordt beschouwd als een tactiek om niet “gemakkelijk” te lijken, en bijgevolg vaak genegeerd. Dit kan ervoor zorgen dat er grenzen overschreden worden zonder dat men dit beseft. Vrouwen die meer geloven in deze opvattingen blijken ook zelf meer geneigd te zijn om tegenstrijdige signalen te geven, waardoor mannen na verloop van tijd geen onderscheid meer kunnen maken tussen een gemeende “nee” en vermomde “ja”.

Uitgevoerd door professionals, don’t try this at home

Dit onderzoek slaagde erin om een indirect verband te leggen tussen het bekijken van pornografie en zorgwekkend seksueel gedrag. Door een omweg te nemen langs hun seksuele overtuigingen voelden de deelnemers zich minder bedreigd en waren ze meer geneigd om eerlijke antwoorden te geven. Uit deze studie bleek dat hoe vaker de gemiddelde Vlaamse jongvolwassene pornografie bekijkt, hoe meer hij of zij gelooft in vertekende seksuele opvattingen, waarvan is aangetoond dat ze samenhangen met agressief seksueel gedrag.

Het is dus belangrijk dat men beseft dat pornografie geen realistische weergave is van menselijke seksualiteit. Liefhebbers van het genre dienen steeds te onthouden wat de afgebeelde seks is voor de acteurs: hun werk. En werk neem je niet mee naar huis.
