Een soort (van) onderzoek
“A harmless thing to say, sort of. It’s just a filler, sort of. It doesn't really mean anything; but after certain things, sort of means everything.” Zo omschrijft de Urban Dictionary het Engelse sort of; als iets vaags dat in bepaalde contexten toch heel veel kan betekenen. Nu lijkt sinds enkele jaren een gelijkaardige constructie het Nederlands te zijn binnengeslopen, soort (van). Deze masterproef onderzocht waar dat gebruik van soort vandaan komt, en hoe het historisch geëvolueerd is.
We kennen een ‘soort’ in de zin van het biologische ‘species’, maar in bepaalde, specifieke gebruikscontexten kan soort een heel andere betekenis oproepen. Denk maar aan het volgende voorbeeld. Wanneer iemand zegt dat personen X en Y ‘een soort liefdesrelatie’ hebben, dan bedoelt die persoon niet alleen dat X en Y iets met elkaar hebben, maar wil hij wellicht ook aangeven dat hij die verhouding afkeurt. De nuance van afkeuring of minachting zit met andere woorden in de betekenis van de constructie ingebakken.
Daarnaast is er ook wat met de vorm aan de hand. Zo kun je zowel ‘een soort liefdesrelatie’ als ‘een soort van liefdesrelatie’ hebben. Het feit dat we als sprekers van het Nederlands kunnen kiezen tussen beide varianten is in de Nederlandse spraakkunsten tot nog toe grotendeels genegeerd geweest. Waarom hebben wij die keuze en waar komt ze vandaan? Analyses van historisch corpusmateriaal brachten aan het licht dat de vormen zonder van in feite een relatief jonge innovatie zijn. Tot in de 19de eeuw werden bijna uitsluitend vormen mét van gebruikt.
Bovendien is het zo dat de vormen met van in Nederland intussen wel bijna helemaal verdwenen zijn (4,5%); in Vlaanderen daarentegen blijken ze iets hardnekkiger stand te houden (20,6%). Daarbij valt op dat het voornamelijk de oudere Vlamingen zijn die de soort van-variant gebruiken (wat ook een indicatie zou kunnen zijn voor het feit dat die variant op z’n retour is). Ook collocaties van soort met een (in tegenstelling tot de soort, het soort, zo’n soort, enz.) hebben een voorkeur voor de soort van-variant.
Dat is, in het licht van een structurele eigenschap van het Nederlands, een vreemde ontwikkeling. Die structurele eigenschap houdt immers in dat het Nederlands de neiging vertoont om bepalingen in een constituent te laten voorafgaan aan hoofden (d.i. een syntactisch samenhangende woordgroep). Zo is het bijvoorbeeld niet mogelijk om *trui rode te zeggen, omdat rode een bepaling is bij het hoofd trui, en er dus steeds aan moet voorafgaan. Vanuit historisch oogpunt is in ‘een soort liefdesrelatie’ soort dus het hoofd en liefdesrelatie de bepaling, en dat is strikt genomen een inbreuk op het hierboven geschetste principe. Wanneer het woordje van tussen beide leden wordt gevoegd – wat taalkundigen een ‘relator’ noemen –, wordt echter tegemoet gekomen aan deze inbreuk.
In dat opzicht is het zeker opvallend te noemen dat de soort van-varianten (vooral in Nederland) zo snel verdwijnen ten voordele van de varianten zonder van. Er moet dus meer aan de hand zijn. De literatuur suggereert inderdaad dat de woordgroepen geheranalyseerd worden. Dat betekent dat sprekers de constituentstructuur op een andere manier gaan interpreteren, waardoor soort als bepaling bij het tweede nomen wordt beschouwd. In deze masterproef werden drie ‘symptomen’ van heranalyse als bewijs aangewend.
Ten eerste toont de analyse van het corpusmateriaal aan dat er sprake is van veranderende congruentie tussen onderwerp en werkwoord. Zo zullen steeds meer mensen zeggen: ‘Dat soort (van) mensen zijn ...’ in plaats van het oudere ‘Dat soort (van) mensen is ...’. Daarnaast kan het lidwoord bij soort al eens wegvallen, wat wijst op een heranalyse van soort als voorbepaling bij het tweede nomen. Voornamelijk in informele registers zoals chatgesprekken vinden we al vormen als ‘ik heb ook al soort minigun gekregen’ (zonder een). Ten slotte duiken sinds heel recent ook al gevallen op waarin soort (van) buiten de nominale constituent op zinsniveau gebruikt wordt, parallel aan het Engelse gebruik beschreven in Urban Dictionary, zoals in ‘ik ben aan het werk, soort van’ of ‘ik ben soort van aan het leren’.
Op die manier heeft deze masterproef proberen uit te spitten welke complexe mechanismen werkbaar zijn achter de schijnbaar eenvoudige oppositie tussen soort en soort van. En evenzo heeft ze getracht een soort (van) bijdrage te leveren tot de – te eenvoudige, zo blijkt – grammaticale beschrijvingen van woordgroepen met soort.
