Wieg, opvoeding én rolmodellen bepalen identiteit en zelfaanvaarding bij dove jongeren

Het merendeel van de jongeren die doof/slechthorend geboren zijn, hebben horende ouders en groeien daardoor op in een horende meerderheidscultuur. Voor deze jongeren is het vaak een grote uitdaging om zichzelf te leren aanvaarden als dove persoon en om een eigen identiteit als dove persoon op te bouwen. Ik ben zelf als doof kind geboren in een horend gezin. Vanuit mijn persoonlijke ervaringen en vanuit mijn opleiding Master in de Klinische Psychologie deed ik onderzoek naar de zoektocht naar identiteitsontwikkeling bij dove en slechthorende jongeren in Vlaanderen.

Ik ging op zoek naar 150 dove en slechthorende jongeren tussen 16 en 30 jaar, samen met hun moeders. Er waren twee groepen: 95 dove jongeren met horende moeders (64%; DKHO) en 54 dove jongeren met dove/slechthorende moeders (36%; DKDO). Zij vulden apart op een online platform vragenlijsten in, die zowel in het Nederlands als in Vlaamse Gebarentaal (VGT), werden aangeboden. Er werd volledige anonimiteit gegarandeerd.

Identiteit als Dove: Horend, Doof of Dansen in twee werelden?

De jongeren beschreven de mate waarin ze zichzelf ervaarden als doof persoon en/of ze een dove of een horende identiteit opbouwden: verkiest men bijvoorbeeld de dovengemeenschap boven de horende gemeenschap? Communiceert men liever in Vlaamse Gebarentaal dan het gesproken Nederlands? Een derde mogelijkheid is het opbouwen van een biculturele identiteit: de jongere is actief in zowel de dove als de horende gemeenschap en voelt zich in beide werelden op zijn plaats. In de literatuur wordt aangetoond dat deze jongeren die “dansen” in zowel de horende als de dove cultuur, het meest gelukkig zouden zijn en de minste psychische problemen zouden ervaren.

 

Welke rol spelen moeders en andere rolmodellen?

Het opgroeien in een horend of doof gezin heeft een belangrijke impact op hoe je als dove jongere in het leven staat. Maar dit werd nog nauwelijks onderzocht. Mijn onderzoek is het eerste dat nagaat welke rol opvoeding, aanvaarding en communicatie door de moeder speelt in de zelfaanvaarding en identiteitsontwikkeling van de jongere. Daarnaast bestuderen we de invloed van rolmodellen: met wie identificeren dove jongeren zich en welke impact hebben zij op de identiteitsontwikkeling en zelfaanvaarding van de dove jongere?

Uit de resultaten blijkt dat dove jongeren met dove/slechthorende ouders een sterkere dove identiteit hebben en ook beter gebarentaal beheersen. Deze jongeren hebben ook de hoogste zelfaanvaarding als dove persoon. Dove jongeren met horende ouders hebben daarentegen een sterkere horende identiteit. Alhoewel er geen verschillen zijn gevonden tussen de jongeren van dove en van horende ouders op vlak van biculturele identiteit. Het onderzoek toont ook aan dat de jongeren van horende ouders zichzelf minder aanvaarden als dove personen en ook meer piekeren over en worstelen met hun identiteit als dove persoon. Echter, hoe beter de communicatie tussen de jongere en de moeder verloopt, hoe makkelijker de jongeren zichzelf als dove personen kunnen aanvaarden!

De opvoedingsstijl van de moeder lijkt een beperkte, maar verrassende rol te spelen in de zelfaanvaarding en identiteitsontwikkeling van de jongere. Tegen de verwachtingen in, blijkt dat hoe meer een moeder de zelfstandigheid van de dove jongere ondersteunt in het maken van keuzes rond zijn/haar doofheid, hoe minder de jongere zichzelf als dove aanvaardt. Verrassend blijkt ook dat jongeren die psychologische controle van de moeder ervaren (bvb. de moeder probeert te beïnvloeden hoe de jongere zich moet voelen en gedragen) vaker een biculturele identiteit hebben. Deze opvoedingsstijl – die in veel onderzoeken samenhangt met negatieve ontwikkelingsuitkomsten – heeft hier ook een positieve invloed op hoe de dove jongere naar zichzelf kijkt als dove jongere.

De identiteitsontwikkeling wordt ook beperkt beïnvloed door rolmodellen, identificatiefiguren waarnaar dove jongeren opkijken. Dove jongeren die zo’n rolmodel hebben zijn enerzijds actiever in de dovencultuur, maar piekeren ook vaker over hun identiteit als dove persoon. Het hebben van een rolmodel blijkt verrassend geen invloed te hebben op de zelfaanvaarding van de dove jongeren.

Open voor beide werelden

Dit onderzoek betekent een belangrijke stap in het beter begrijpen van de complexe en dynamische zoektocht naar identiteit en zelfaanvaarding van dove jongeren in Vlaanderen. Een voorzichtige conclusie is dat het, voor dove jongeren én hun moeders, altijd een goed idee is om open te staan voor zowel de dove als horende wereld, gemeenschap en/of cultuur, hoe moeilijk dat soms ook is.
