Studie van het anodiseergedrag van de additief geproduceerde AlSi10Mg aluminium legering

De boekdrukkunst werd uitgevonden rond 1439 te Gutenberg, Duitsland. De driedimensionale drukwerk techniek, 3D printen, werd echter pas veel later in de jaren 1980 uitgevonden. Deze nieuwe drukwerk technologie laat het toe om zeer complexe onderdelen te produceren, door ze laag per laag op te bouwen. Dit is in schril contrast met de conventionele productietechnieken die tot het finale product komen door materiaal weg te nemen.

3D printen heeft een aantal zeer interessante voordelen t.o.v. conventionele productietechnieken, zoals een kortere productietijd en een vermindering van het geproduceerde afval. Meer nog deze techniek laat het toe om meer complexe onderdelen te vervaardigen, die soms gewoonweg niet mogelijk zijn met conventionele middelen. Een dergelijke 3D printing techniek die metalen onderdelen vervaardigd is bijvoorbeeld Selective Laser Melting of kortweg SLM. Deze techniek maakt gebruik van een Ytterbium laserstraal om het metaalpoeder selectief te smelten en op het metaalpoeder laag per laag aan elkaar te smelten. Op deze wijze wordt het eindproduct laag per laag opgebouwd.

Het metalen onderdeel dat op deze wijze wordt vervaardigd, ondergaat een aantal zeer complexe thermische procesessen wat resulteert in een zeer specifieke en ook fijne microstructuur. De microstructuur van een materiaal is de structuur van dit materiaal op een microscopische schaal. Deze microstructuur kan met behulp van een microscoop worden bekeken. De mechanische eigenschappen van het 3D geprint materiaal, zoals bijvoorbeeld de sterkte van het materiaal, worden bepaald door zijn microstructuur. Deze microstructuur wordt op zijn beurt bepaald door de parameters van het productieproces. De invloed van de microstructuur en de onrechtstreekse invloed van de parameters van het productieproces op de mechanische eigenschappen van het 3D geprint materiaal werden maar voor een gelimiteerd aantal metaallegeringen onderzocht in de literatuur. Een metaallegering is een mengsel van verschillende metalen, die tezamen werden gesmolten. Verder werd er zelfs nog veel minder onderzoek gedaan naar de corrosie eigenschappen en de corrosiebescherming van het materiaal dat via dit nieuwe productieproces werd vervaardigt.

De lucht- en ruimtevaartindustrie toont een grootte interesse in deze nieuwe productietechniek omwille van het feit dat men op deze manier zeer snel tot een werkend prototype kan komen. Dat is dan ook de reden waarom het AEROSTREAM-project, dat de applicatie van 3D geprint aluminium in de lucht- en ruimtevaart onderzoekt, tot stand kwam dankzij de financiering van INNOVIRIS. Het AEROSTREAM-project onderzoekt meer specifiek het gebruik van de AlSi10Mg aluminium legering in de lucht- en ruimtevaart. Dit project onderzoekt onder meer de mechanische eigenschappen van het via SLM geproduceerde materiaal, en hoe deze zijn gerelateerd aan de microstructuur en de parameters van het productieproces. De onderzochte mechanische eigenschappen zijn dan bijvoorbeeld de sterkte en de hardheid van het materiaal. Dit deel van het project wordt onderzocht door de ULB en UCL. De oppervlakte eigenschappen, corrosiegedrag en de corrosiebescherming van deze 3D geprinte aluminium legering worden onderzocht door de SURF groep van de VUB. Deze thesis, die onderdeel uitmaakt van het AEROSTREAM-project, onderzoekt de corrosiebescherming van deze 3D geprinte AlSi10Mg aluminium legering.

Voor lucht- en ruimtevaart applicaties wordt aluminium geanodiseerd voor een betere weerstand tegen corrosie. Anodiseren is het proces waarbij een deel van het aluminium wordt omgezet in zijn oxide. Deze oxide laag, die goed hecht aan het onderliggende aluminium en die ondoordringbaar is door water en zuurstof, zorgt voor een betere weerstand tegen corrosie. Deze stabiele oxide laag kan poreus zijn of compact afhankelijk van het gebruikte medium waarin het anodiseren plaats vindt. Wanneer een zuur medium wordt gebruikt zal de oxide laag eerder poreus zijn en wanneer een pH neutraal medium wordt gebruikt zal ze eerder compact zijn. Het anodiseren van conventioneel geproduceerde aluminiumlegeringen is zeer goed begrepen en wordt al meer dan 100 jaar gebruikt. Anderzijds voor 3D geprint materiaal is dit anodisatieproces nog niet bestudeert en het anodisatie gedrag van dit 3D geprint aluminium zou weleens totaal anders kunnen zijn dan het conventioneel geproduceerde aluminium. Dit omwille van de totaal verschillende microstructuur die het 3D geprint aluminium heeft. Verder werd de prestatie van dit geanodiseerd 3D geprint aluminium nog niet bestudeerd in de literatuur.

Het doel van deze thesis is dan ook het onderzoeken van het anodisatieproces en de prestatie van het geanodiseerd 3D geprint aluminium. Deze thesis geeft dus een beter idee van het anodisatie gedrag van 3D geprint aluminium. En het is nu net deze informatie die nodig is om het anodiseren van 3D geprint aluminium op een industriële schaal toe te passen in bijvoorbeeld de lucht- en ruimtevaartindustrie. Zodat in de toekomst meer onderdelen van een vliegtuig en misschien zelfs een geheel vliegtuig kan geconstrueerd worden uit 3D geprint materiaal.
