Micrometeorieten: kleine boodschappers uit ons zonnestelsel

Elk jaar komt 40.000 ton extra terrestrisch materiaal terecht op onze Aarde en dit vooral onder de vorm van micrometeorieten, kleine partikels die 10 tot 2000 mm groot zijn. Je kan ze overal (zelfs in je tuin of op je dak) terugvinden, maar dit is natuurlijk makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan. Deze minuscule steentjes kunnen ons veel bijleren over wat er zich precies in ons zonnestelsel bevindt, maar door hun grootte is het niet zo simpel om ze te vinden en te onderzoeken. 

 

Antarctica, the place to be

 

Je kan nu uiteraard proberen om zelf een micrometeoriet te zoeken op straat, maar de kans dat je snel eentje vindt, is vrij klein. Ze raken verloren tussen al het materiaal dat buiten aanwezig is. Denk maar aan de aarde in je tuin, zand op het strand of de kiezelsteentjes op je oprit. Het is de spreekwoordelijke naald in een hooiberg. Daarnaast zorgt ons nat klimaat er voor dat de partikels vrij snel verweren en gealtereerd worden door de aardse condities. De samenstelling van deze micrometeorieten is dan ook niet meer precies dezelfde als van toen ze nog in ons zonnestelsel rondzweefden. 

Een plaats op aarde waar micrometeorieten wel in grote concentraties aanwezig zijn, is Antarctica. Daar is de input van materiaal bijna uitsluitend extra terrestrisch. Enkel materiaal dat via de volledige atmosfeer verspreid wordt, zoals vulkanische as, kan hier accumuleren. Het Antarctisch klimaat laat ook een betere bewaring van de partikels toe. Ze verweren veel trager. Dit is de reden waarom al enkele collecties van micrometeorieten verzameld zijn op verschillende plaatsen op Antarctica. 

 

Elke soort zijn eigen aanpak 

 

Er zijn 3 verschillende soorten micrometeorieten. Cosmic spheruleszijn glazige bolletjes die volledig zijn opgesmolten tijdens het binnenkomen in de atmosfeer. De tweede groep, scoriacious micrometeoriteszijn niet volledig opgesmolten, maar bevatten veel luchtbellen en bestaan uit heel fijnkorrelig materiaal. De unmelted micrometeoritesvormen de laatste groep. Zoals de naam zegt, zijn deze niet opgesmolten. De originele mineralen zijn nog steeds aanwezig op dezelfde manier als voor doorgang door de atmosfeer. Dit maakt deze groep heel interessant, maar het is ook de meest zeldzame aangezien de condities bij binnenkomst in de atmosfeer precies juist moeten zijn om te vermijden dat de mineralen opsmelten. 

Aangezien cosmic spherulesin veel grotere aantallen aanwezig zijn, worden deze vaak in grote massa en op destructieve wijze onderzocht. Hierdoor is al veel gekend rond hun samenstelling en de verschillende subgroepen. Scoriacious enunmelted micrometeoriteszijn zeldzamer dus wil men deze liever niet (of toch niet meteen) op destructieve wijze onderzoeken. 

 

De uitdaging 

 

Op dit moment ligt de grote uitdaging in het vinden van een manier om de laatste twee groepen op een niet destructieve manier te onderzoeken en zo de samenstelling en structuur te achterhalen. Een manier om dit te doen, is CT-scans maken met X-stralen. Er wordt een soort Röntgenfoto gemaakt van de micrometeoriet om te bekijken hoe deze precies is opgebouwd. Een beetje zoals een scan van je gebroken arm. Door meerdere scans te maken, kan een 3D beeld gevormd worden van het deeltje. Met behulp van X-stralen kan ook de chemische en mineralogische samenstelling bepaald worden. Door de grootte van de micrometeorieten is dit wel zeer moeilijk om te doen en is zeer geavanceerde apparatuur nodig, zoals een synchrotron. Op basis van de behaalde resultaten kunnen dan later eventueel nog andere (destructieve) methodes worden toegepast. 

 

 

De micrometeorieten vormen een heel groot aandeel van de totale hoeveelheid extra terrestrisch materiaal op onze planeet en kunnen heel wat info geven over wat precies in ons zonnestelsel (en misschien daarbuiten) allemaal rondzweeft. Daarom is het, ondanks de grote uitdaging, belangrijk dat deze deeltjes worden onderzocht. Wie weet wat ze ons nog allemaal kunnen vertellen.
