Goodvertising: geloofwaardig of doorzichtig? Door de ogen van millennials

Goodvertising: goede doel of schoenen schijn?

Dit zijn twee recente, controversiële campagnes die beide onder de waaier van goodvertising of purpose marketing vallen. Goodvertising is een reclamefenomeen dat de laatste jaren zijn intrede heeft gemaakt. Het wordt gedefinieerd als de neiging van een commercieel merk, om te spreken over topics die gunstig zijn voor de hele samenleving en zelfs sociale verandering kunnen inhouden. Met goodvertising betreden commerciële merken het vaarwater van de dienstensector, ngo’s, overheden en goede doelen. Dit is echter niet zonder risico’s of uitdagingen. Een geloofwaardigheidskloof tussen de campagneboodschap en de consument manifesteert zich bij dit soort campagnes. Willen commerciële bedrijven echt verandering in de wereld teweegbrengen of worden goodvertising campagnes louter ingeschakeld om imago en verkoopcijfers op te krikken? Deze geloofwaardigheidskloof vormt de kern van dit onderzoek.

 

Bedrijven als burger van de samenleving

Onder druk van de veranderende markt én vooral de veranderende consument is het contract tussen commerciële bedrijven en de samenleving verschillende keren hervormd. De shift van commerciële bedrijven als louter economische actoren naar bedrijven met een maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid en missie werd ingeluid door de opkomst van Corporate Social Responsibility. Reclame fungeert niet langer als spiegel van de samenleving. Het is nu reclame – onder de vorm van goodvertising – die bepaalt hoe de wereld, alsook zijn inwoners er zou moeten uitzien. 

 

Millennials: de sociale generatie

De millennials – ook wel de cause-seeking generation genoemd –  zijn de generatie bij uitstek die commerciële bedrijven ertoe aanzetten zich meer sociaal verantwoord te gedragen. Deze generatie – die bestaat uit jongeren geboren tussen 1980 en 2000 - heeft namelijk andere waarden, visies en verwachtingen ten aanzien van de samenleving, maar ook ten aanzien van bedrijven. Millennials groeien op in een hypergeconnecteerde, transparante wereld waar ze meer dan ooit toegang hebben tot bedrijfsinformatie en praktijken. Deze groep jonge consumenten verwacht dan ook van bedrijven – zowel groot, klein, lokaal als globaal – dat ze zich engageren voor allerhande sociale doelen. 

 

Geloofwaardigheid als pijnpunt

Geloofwaardigheid is een van de centrale concepten in het onderzoek van Famke Van Mol. Aan de hand van interviews met verscheidene millennials werd nagegaan in welke mate deze groep de goodvertising campagnes van commerciële merken geloofwaardig acht. Merken steunen namelijk op geloofwaardigheid. De consument staat zeer sceptisch ten aanzien van de claims die merken maken in hun reclame. Ook voor goodvertising is geloofwaardigheid uiterst belangrijk. Bij goodvertising staan consumenten namelijk vaak sceptisch ten aanzien van zowel de boodschap als het achterliggende bedrijfsmotief. De gesprekken met deze millennials werden in gang gezet aan de hand van recente goodvertising campagnes. 

 

Goodvertising: doorzichtig of geloofwaardig voor millennials?

Uit dit onderzoek blijkt dat de sceptische houding die de respondenten bezitten aangaande traditionele reclame, grotendeels doorgetrokken wordt naar goodvertising. Een groot deel van de respondenten gelooft niet zonder meer in de oprechtheid van het sociale engagement van merkenen blijft de achterliggende reden – winst maken – in het achterhoofd houden. Dit houdt verband met het feit dat het medium reclame aangewend wordt én dat commerciële bedrijven de zenders zijn van dergelijke maatschappelijke boodschappen. Beide dragen de connotatie van willen verkopen. Wanneer respondenten goodvertising louter als marketingstunt beschouwen, daalt de geloofwaardigheidvan het maatschappelijke engagement. Ook het feit dat commerciële bedrijven geen kennis en een reputatie hebben opgebouwd ten aanzien van deze problematieken komt hun geloofwaardigheid niet ten goede. Commerciële merken worden door deze sceptische groep bestempeld als moraalridders die valse beloftes de wereld insturen. Hun houding tegenover deze nieuwe reclamevorm is dan ook uiterst negatief. De groep van respondenten die goodvertising campagnes van commerciële merken volledig gelooft is duidelijk in de minderheid. Ondanks een eerder afkeurende houding ten opzichte van goodvertising campagnes, staan de meeste respondenten wel open voor het feit dat bedrijven hun steentje willen bijdragen aan een betere samenleving. Concreet reiken respondenten enkele factoren aan die er toe kunnen leiden dat de geloofwaardigheid van goodvertising campagnes stijgt. 

 

Dit onderzoek vertelt ons dat overeenstemming tussen woorden – de maatschappelijke beloftes in goodvertising – én daden – of deze al dan niet worden omgezet in praktijk – één van de belangrijkste factoren is in de geloofwaardigheidsperceptie van consumenten. Indien de respondenten van oordeel zijn dat het bedrijf niet in staat is om een bijdrage te leveren aan de problematiek die wordt aangekaart in de campagne, dan heeft dit een negatief effect op de geloofwaardigheid van de goodvertising: de bedoeling, de oprechtheid, de boodschap en de link tussen het bedrijf en het thema worden in vraag gesteld. 

 

Een andere factor die het scepticisme kan doen indijken en de geloofwaardigheid kan verhogen, is de duur van het engagement. Hoe langer het maatschappelijke engagement van een bedrijf, hoe sterker de geloofwaardigheid. Millennials verwachten dat bedrijven hun engagementen staven aan de hand van concrete realisaties en/ of cijfermateriaal. Een abstracte belofte wordt best tastbaar gemaakt. Dit is makkelijker wanneer een merk zich in het verleden reeds heeft ingezet voor een maatschappelijk traject. In dit geval kan het bedrijf in kwestie  de vooruitgang in de realisatie van het engagement aantonen. In het algemeen stijgt ook de geloofwaardigheid wanneer problemen op een kleinere schaal worden aangepakt of daartoe een eerste aanzet wordt gegeven.

 

Tenslotte kan ook een logische afstemming tussen bedrijf en maatschappelijk thema er voor zorgen dat de geloofwaardigheid van een goodvertising campagne toeneemt. Wanneer goodvertising voornamelijk als doel heeft de producten van een merk in de verf te zetten, dan is het thema beter gerelateerd aan de producten. Wordt een campagne daarentegen gebruik om het bedrijf in zijn geheel te promoten, dan stemt het sociale thema beter overeen met de waarden, cultuur en beleid van het bedrijf als dusdanig. 

 

Kortom, het komt  erop neer dat bedrijven, zowel groot als klein, beter geen loze beloftes maken of geen maatschappelijk engagement aangaan, wanneer ze dit niet kunnen waarmaken. Door rekening te houden met de aanbevelingen die in het onderzoek van Famke Van Mol uitgebreid neergeschreven zijn, kan een poging gedaan worden om de geloofwaardigheidskloof bij goodvertising te dichten.
